Affinity
This is just a quick explanation of when affinity will be gained for said companion.

If you have the said companion following you, you will gain/lose affinity for the actions you do at all time. For the ones not following you at the time, they can still gain/lose affinity, but only when around you.

For example, if you're settlement gets attacked, and your companions are there too, dogmeat gets downed and you heal him, you gain affinity for those companions that are there with you and like you healing dogmeat.

Now, if you're too far away (exact distance is unknown), like out wondering about with dogmeat, and all your other companions are at your main settlement, you heal dogmeat out in the field when the others aren't near, that will not increase the affinity for the companions that like you doing that. They have to be close enough to you for you to be able to effect their affinity.
Easy Affinty ~ Tip
This part isn't really a guide, but a very useful tip.

Pick one place to send all companions to when they aren't following you, and try and pick a small area so they're close together at all time. I picked Red Rocket personally. It's the perfect size to fit all the companions comfortably, and they're always close by you.

Now that all you're companions are here, use this spot, and this spot only, to craft/mod weapons and armor. Why? Crafting/modding weapons and armor has no negative effects on any on the companions, but have positive effects on a good number of them. So every time you craft/mod weapons and armor (which you will do anyways from just naturally playing the game), you're also gaining affinity. Win win! ^-^

Crafting/modding weapons and armor gains affinity for the following companions: Codsworth, Danse, Preston (Weapons only), and X6-88

Oh, and before anyone says "you downloaded it wrong", no I didn't.

I used Vortex to install it automatically for me, I selected which version of the mod I wanted, and it installed correctly with no issues whatsoever.

It just doesn't work.

Hancock actually likes it when you run around naked, just like Cait does.
X6-88 is the only companion that dislikes it.
