What is the Gigantopithecus? What is it good for? Benefits?
-The gigantopithecus is a gorrilla type dino that looks more like a "big-foot". The biggest advantage of owning one is its ability to throw you (the rider) into the air so you can leap up to a ledge, or jump a wall of a base. They can also harvest wood and thatch quickly and easily as well as defend themselves in combat quite nicely.
-As a different method of taming is required for the gigantopithecus, you can tame and ride one at any level. No saddle is required to ride, as you simply ride on its shoulders. Berries are only needed to tame one, and you don't need to knock them out to tame. This is IDEAL for new players as it provides a strong mount that can one-hit ants, easily take down raptors, and go toe-to-toe with Carno's (if they have their health bumped 3 or 4 times) (Mine did at level 9) . They can also carry your weight plus a little extra (200-250 lbs).
-After testing the gigantopithecus's damage levels, one alone can destroy a wooden or thatch home in a matter of minutes. Anything built with the stone/reinforced tier or higher cannot be damaged by a gigantopithecus, so new spawns can't rule the world with one ):
How do I find one? How do i tame one?
-From personal experience, gigantopithecus's usually spawn in dense jungles. They don't typically spawn around other dinos and they can be hard to spot, as they can look like a tree from far away. The easiest way to spot one is to fly through the woods on a pteradon and spot one from high up. If you are low level or don't own one, simply running through dense, empty woods can help. If you cant find anything, try killing nearby dinos. This may free a spawn point for one if they haven't spawned already. If you still can't find one, I personally have found many in the woods east of the blue oblisk, next to the beach.
-To tame a gigantopithecus, you need berries. No narcoberries or narcotics this time. They act similarly to the itchyosaurs in the sense that you have to hand feed the food by putting the berry you want fed in the {0} hot key and pressing {E} when close. NOTE: the gigantopithecus are not totally friendly creatures. They can be easily frightened and WILL attack you with brute strength. You must wait for one to be hungry to feed the next berry. NOTE: the first time gap after the initial berry feeding may last 1 to 2 minutes before he/she is hungry again. Every time after that usually lasts 10-15 seconds to be hungry again. Repeat feeding until he/she is tamed.
-Try to keep your distance during the process. They can be spooked easily and they will charge after you. If one does agro after you, no need to fret. There is still a way to save the taming. If you keep running, stopping only to regain stamina (if you need to) or making sure you can still see him (if you run very fast) he/she will eventually get tired of chasing you. He/she will keep their level of taming as long as you don't go super far away. Once they are calm, continue feeding.
Quick Tips on Effective Taming
-From personal testing, Mejo berries are the best source of feeding. Having other berries (Azul, Amar, or Tinto) (Blue, Yellow, Red) will agro the gigantopithecus if fed to. Most players miss that even having those berries in your invintory can cause agro. I suggest eating all but the mejo berries (stim and narco berries have no effect in your invintory, nor on the gigantopithecus). For best taming results, I suggest forcing a one time agro so the gigantopithecus chases you, and you lead him/her to the beach where they are easier to keep track of. Once they stop chasing you, begin taming.
-To be sure you don't them during taming, DO NOT SPRINT. Sprinting scares them and sends them charging after them, especially when you are giving berries to them. Try walking casually behind them, press {E} once and walk away. This causes the gigantopithecus to eat the one berry without fearing you. NOTE: If he still agros after this approach, make sure you have no red, blue, or yellow berries still. having them on hand can lead to his anger... Also avoid feeding him/her to soon, as it may spook them.
- During taming, be sure to keep your distance and don't stay in front of them. Try to stay behind them and stand a decent distance away (roughly the length of a Trike at minumum).
-Also try stockpiling Mejo berries before taming so your top priority is taming.
-If you have any animal feed laying around, try creating snake kibble. It tames gigantopithecus's 8x faster with better effeciency.
-Other users may suggest trying to feed them when they stop to dig for seeds, but i find that spooks them half of the time. Simply walking behind them as they roam works easily, as long as you don't sprint and don't touch them.
Conclusion
-Overall, taming a gigantopithecus is a matter of patience and trial and error. If you still struggle taming one or finding one, try going to single player and either finding or spawning one to practice on. If there is none to be found on your server, try killing dinos to free space for the game to spawn one, as the server may have max dino capacity once the update takes over.
-If I missed anything or you found your own discoveries, please share them in the comments and I will adjust the guide as necessary. If nothing here works for you, then my apologies as it all worked perfectly for me each time i tried.
Edits and Additions
I'm putting all new discoveries, changes, and noteworthy comments here so returning viewers can see the differences faster. I will also credit the comment writers who helped with infomation here!
- When taming, try to feed him/her from behind while they are walking. This should avoid issues of them turning around and noticing you while they are standing still. (@phflack)
- If you want your tamed gigantopithecus to collect fiber for you, try setting his wander radius to low and set him to wander mode. He should roam nearby and collect thousands of fiber for you (very useful while you are collecting other supplies around him, so he is easier to find).
- If you don't feel like hunting your gigantopithecus after setting him to wander, simply placing or dismounting on, or next to, a bush will make him/her collect berries (you can't be riding)
- Some players have reported that dying by the same gigantopithecus you are taming too many times may cause him/her to resist taming by that player, so be careful to let them kill you. (Unconfirmed officially)
- I went to a new server that started after the gigantopithecus was added and their spawns are dramatically increased! Simply walking along the coasts you can spot two or three nearby. They still do not spawn with one another though. If your server still lacks in gigantopithecus, clearing out existing dinos will definetly help. In time, they should be much easier to find.
- The higher level gigantopithecus's may take MUCH longer to be hungry again after eating, so try aiming for a lower level (6-7 or below) if you want one quicker.
- If you haven't noticed already from pictures or other players tamed gigantopithecus's, you can add any hat/helmet to them via inventory!

i remeber when this thin first came out i tried to tame it by locking it in a pen but it grabbed me and pulled me into the pen before eating my butt and maiming me before i could say a word.

They spawn pretty much all the time on Cragg's Isle (South-West corner of the map.)

It's a fairly safe zone with Dilo's, sporadic Raptors (sometimes I'll go for days without seeing any, and some days there will be 3-4 in the area) and the very rare Carno.

If you walk around the Eastern beach, you can find a very large clearing - this is where they are most commonly found. (Though there have been times when it's been empty of them for a few days.)

Walking is the key constantly around the back of it, if it spins and walks towards you then just back off and start your walk towards it again, the key is to not try rushing the tame if you feel its not right to feed then don`t, wait a few seconds again till he stops then walks off in a different direction then start it again, remember bumping into it a certain amount of time will cause it to start over again - the taming bar will auto drop to bottom no matter if you feed or not so be patient. hope this helps

@Bunta Try the southern cave in towrds the center of the map. It has LOTS of boa eggs if you need them for kibble.

@RawRz yeah i tried that. he still agros me constantly. or another wild dino comes and aggros it (like a dilo who attacks me) If i could only knock it out Grrr! or find some boas to tame for eggs. my base is right outside a cave but cave only has bats, spiders and scorps :C
