Why would you trade for cash?
  • Are you the kind of person who ended up spending quite a lot of money just to get those unusuals couriers, DC hooks, Timebreakers, Arcana's and maybe those new sets for your favourite heroes and want a way out to get your cash back but Valve won't let you, then cash trading is for you. Simply put, there is no way to encash your Steam Wallet except trading your items off for real cash.

  • Are you the kind of person who likes to buy these virtual items but don't feel like spending the amount you see in the Dota2 store or the Steam Community Market, then cash trading is for you. Simply put, you can purchase these very same items for 60%-70% off the prices when you trade with real cash.
But is it safe?
The safest way to trade is to trade items within the Valve Eco-system. That is to say item trading using the Trade Window or Steam Offer. Cash Trading is definitely not a 100% safe process and knowing the risks associated with it greatly helps.

The process can be briefly summarized by the following scenarios
(Assume Person A is trading with Person B)
  • Person A sends items to Person B using the Trade Window or Steam Offer. Once Person B confirms that he got the items, he/she then proceeds to pay Person A using the pre-mentioned Payment Method.
  • Or alternatively, Person B sends payment to Person A using the pre-mentioned Payment Method. Once Person A confirms that he has received the payment he then proceeds to send items to Person B using the Trade Window or Steam Offer.

Now let us study the above scenarios
  • The risks associated with the first scenario is:-
As soon as Person A sends items to Person B, Person B removes Person A from his Friend List and Blocks him. Thus Person A loses his items
  • The risks associated with the second scenario is:-
As soon as Person B sends payment to Person A, Person A removes Person B from his Friend List and Blocks him. Thus Person B loses his money.

Even when the trade occurs smoothly there is still one more risk left. After sending the money, depending on the payment method, (ie: Paypal), the sender may, at a later date, report that his account was used illegitimately. In which case, the payment will be reversed and the receiver's account will have the funds placed on hold and not have access to it. This is called a Chargeback. Its explained in a separate section below.
Ok I understand the risks. Whats next?
Once you have assessed the risks associated with Cash Trading, its time for you to create a trade listing in a trading site. Example of trading sites are :-Dota2Trade SubReddit, DotaMarket[www.dotamarket.com] etc. These sites have their own sets or rules and regulations. You should always read them and be well versed with them. Failing to comply with their rules might get you suspended or in the worst case scenario, banned, from their site. Your item listing will look somewhat like :-

[H] Item X / Money etc [W] Item Y / Money Y etc

Alternatively, you can also browse through the other buy / sell listings. Find something that interests you, comment on that post, wait for their reply and add them on Steam depending upon their reply (this is to say that if they are not interested in the offer you have posted then there is no point adding them up). Remember, Reddit uses a special system called flair. Thus all members of the dota2trade subreddit are supposed to link their profile with their steam accounts. So, you can access their profile by getting the link from their flairs. To get the link, hover your cursor over their flair and copy the link. Its almost always advised to comment on the Steam Profile of the person you are adding up as to why you have added.

Remember, most traders will almost always ignore your friend request unless you have mentioned on their profile as to why you have added them. Once you have added and the person has accepted your friend, comes the most important part :- The Actual Trading.
The Actual Trading -Risk Assessement
Once all the prep talk is done that is to say the payment method / amount etc comes the part where you will have to decide who goes first. Now its natural to be careful because as I have mentioned earlier you can either lose your items or money if you are careless. Remember being too careful is always better off than being lazy, careless and regretting later. At any point of time you can always ask for a Middleman (more information on MM is available below).

Now let us look at the factors which decided who goes first
(Assume Person A trading with Person B)

  • If Person A has more number of rep in his Cash Reputation Thread than Person B and this Thread dates at least about 3 months back then Person B is obliged to go first unless Person A says so otherwise.
  • If Person A has huge Steam Profile Level and a lot of Paid Games on his account as compared to Person B then Person B is obliged to go first unless Person A says so otherwise. Remember this is because in Steam all the games have DRM. That means the games are tied to a single account. If lets say Person B owns $1000 worth of games and someone has to report his profile on Steam and his account gets banned, he loses $1000 worth of games. Now thats a lot of money to lose. So people with huge amounts of games on their profile tend not to scam.To calculate the worth of a Steam Profile, you can use Steam DB Calculator [www.steamdb.info] .

Also remember
A good rule of thumb is looking at the value of the item you're trading with. If you're selling for something for lets say at least $500 USD in real life dollars, the buyers inventory should be at least 1.5x that. Use Steam Tools[steam.tools] to evaluate. If you're selling something for higher than that, they need to have a MUCH better history than just the run of the mill. Ask for references and vouches if you need.

Things that should not influence you when deciding who will go first
  • Someone has high steam profile level but only a few paid games (<10-20). Its relatively easy and cheap to gain a high profile level by buying the Steam Trading Cards and then crating them into badges. Remember such profiles are worth very less as compared to profiles with lots of paid games. Also remember to use SteamDB Calculator[www.steamdb.com] just in case.
  • Someone has a lot of rep in their Cash Reputation Thread but these reps are basically buying and reselling of cheap items like few number of keys (<10-20), few arcanas (1 or 2 or maybe 3) etc. Remember its really easy to get a pages full of rep and that too even quickly just by buying and reselling cheap items.
  • Comments on Steam Profile. I can't emphasize this point enough. Never go by comments on Steam Profile. You can buy pages full of comments for a very few bucks. Also comments on Steam Profile can be deleted by the User. That means you will never see any negative comments. Always remember a genuine trader never asks for rep on his Steam Profile. That place is reserved for people who are adding him to place comments as to why he was added.

The following sections covers three crucial topics. Read them though before the start of the trade.
-Obtaining a Steamrep Profile
-How to properly check a rep thread?
-How to verify the other trader?
Obtaining a Steamrep profile
Perform this step every single time you are trading. Very Important.
Always check the SteamRep Status[www.steamrep.com] of the person you are trading with.

Shown below are some of the profile on SteamRep

As a rule of the thumb, you should avoid trading with people have the Scammer Tag (Having the 'X') or people have Pending Reports (Having the '?').People who have special reputation such as Administrator/Moderator of different communities, verified MM will have that mentioned on their SteamRep profiles. Thus, these people can be trusted fully. Also if you are ever employing a MM, make sure they have MM status marked on SteamRep.If you are still not comfortable going first, you can always call off the trade or ask for a MM. Its your item / money. No one is forcing you to commit a trade.

Step by step process on how to obtain a SteamRep profile
Open Steam. The click on Settings > Interface. Find the option called "Display Steam URL address bar whenever available" and check it. Doing this will add a address bar to you Steam Browser window whenever possible.

Now open a chat window with the person from your friend list. From the chat window, find a small dropdown arrow next to the persons profile name and click on it. From the dropdown menu that opens, click on the option "View Steam Profile".

Wait for the profile to load and copy the profile URL.

Now open SteamRep[www.steamrep.com] from your web browser and paste the URL that you have copied previously in the box that has the text "Check reputation status for a Steam user: " just above it and press the "Search" button. Voila you are done.

Now depending upon the user you have searched the profile will be one of the four type shown above.
How to properly check a Rep Thread?
(This section is taken from i7| Jing's guide :- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CLceCbBvzeQLjZI4viYUQI9NOpYIVtkauWhFEshszrk/edit )

First of all, what is a reputation thread?
A reputation thread is a history of the money trades that the trader has done.

This is what a reputation thread looks like and please refers to the numbers labeled in the picture:

1) Account creation date.
2) Steam ID and URL. Always check to ensure that the user is the one you’re trading with.
3) Miscellaneous identifiers. Some people use account creation date. Others use unique/hard to obtain Items, and sometimes a combination of both.
Please verify some of these identifiers if you have any doubts. Asking Leon to PM on you dota2traders.com is worth the extra effort.

After checking that the person is who they say they are…read their reputation threads and check the following:
1) Who are the people that +rep the trader (Are the traders reputable and well-known?)
2) What they are +rep’ing the trader for (What are the items being traded?)
3) Content of the +reps. (Who went first? How did the trade go?)
A +rep is only valid on a traders’ reputation thread when the trader has gone first.

If you still feel uneasy, do not hesitate to verify with those who have +repped the trader like below.

Keep in mind:
- A +rep for a Defense 2 War Dog is much more reliable than 10 +reps for ~10 keys.
- If you see +reps in the first few posts stating “I went first…”
Please report the posts so that moderators can investigate.
How to verify another trader?
(This section is taken from i7| Jing's guide :- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Xr7Xu-XPEUcIwS5V8i9d7KRbAW6zjXZvmiHYM3DVA7s/edit. A few images have been changed from the original guide )

Every Trader must be careful as their time, money and efforts can go to waste instantly with just one trade ban.

Keep in mind that this guide is not a catch all, as you may encounter many different situations, so please don't forget to use your own judgement and also try to verify them through other mediums such as Facebook/Twitter/etc.

1) Check if the person you are trading with is really the one you are dealing with.

In order to do this:
-Cross check the Steam Profile with their Reputation thread1, Steamrep profile, etc.
-Check their DotA2Traders Account history: Join date, rep thread, profile posts, etc.

Below are a few samples of what are easily checkable via steamrep.com

Via Steam Client

Via SteamRep

Via Rep Thread

2) Steam Profile:
Below is an example of a Steam Profile. Pay attention to the boxed areas.

1 – Name = This is changeable, also check to see what their previous names were. If you see anyone using the name like Leon [dota2traders.com], that should raise a red flag for you.
2 – Steam Level. This is acquired by getting the trading cards and crafting badges. It is harder to get a higher steam level in this way. You can also check their badges to find out when the account was created (or use Steamrep)
3 – Always helps to read the description and check for consistency.
4 – Look at the # of played DotA2 games the account has. Usually a new account will have less hours played. Also, a handy tool may be to also check their profile on Dotabuff to see if they play often as well or just idle for thousands of hours.
5 – Check the number of games an account has. Also, check what kind of games they have and if they are paid or free.
6 – Inventory – What kind of items does this person have? The more valuable the inventory, the less riskier that person is.
7 - Who are they friends with? Do they interact with a lot of high profile traders? If they do, you can ask those traders if they can vouch for them.

3) Check Other Trading Sites!
If the person trades often, you can also get a good sense of how active he/she is on dota2lounge.

Just replace their steam ID number in the URL shown in the screenshot!

4) STEAMREP+GOOGLE
although it is mentioned once above, remember this is your best tool at your disposal.

As most of the transactions will require an e-mail, you can also perform a quick Google search on the e-mail for the scammer. When a scammer has been caught doing a Paypal scam and reported on Steamrep, they will usually have their Paypal email flagged. And you will also find any related scam reports.

Also, on Steamrep, there are some hotlinks available on the person’s profile that will allow you to search via google/reddit/steamrep/etc. This is located on the bottom right below the “Copy Info” button.

Here is an example from i7|Jing's Steamrep Profile.

ALSO! It is helpful to check their previously used names. This is MUCH more accurate than the steam profile page.

You can do this in two steps here:

1) Click Historical Data

2) Scroll down!

Do not forget to take the appropriate screenshots whenever you do a trade. In the case you need to submit a report, we will require at the very least, the trade agreement, Inventory History and the screenshot of the Paypal Account.

The Actual Trading -Trading and the Follow Up Process
Now you have assessed the Risk and verified the integrity of the other person. Proceed with the trade. Assuming a MM is not used, the following process is always followed.

If you decided you go first, then proceed with the Payment or Trade the items. Wait for the other person to send you the Payment or Trade the items, or vice versa. Make sure to take a screenshot of the payment page and inventory history to keep a record of your transactions. Also these screenshots are required when you are posting a rep on the Rep Thread hosted by DotaMarket[www.dotamarket.com]. As a rule of the thumb, whenever you are posting a rep, be sure to include these points

  • Whether a MM was used or not. (If yes, name the MM)
  • Mode of Payment
  • Amount Paid
  • Item Traded
  • Additional Comments

Ex:-
+rep awesome trader. He bought 100 keys from me. He paid first using Paypal. Didn't use a MM. Would like to trade with him again.

Don't forget to exchange greetings at the end of a successful trade and proceed to Rep the other person on their Rep Thread. Always remember to maintain a good relationship with fellow traders as this can result in good discounts and giving you preference when they are selling something for quick-sell rates.
Middleman (or MM)
(This section is quoted as is from this link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Dota2Trade/comments/2bh1pz/psa_updated_realworld_currency_trading_guide/ .It is so informative that it would be unjust to rewrite this part)

  • The use of a middleman when dealing with real-world currency transactions is imperative. It significantly reduces the risk for both parties, since neither will have to "go first" when trading.
  • There are many great and trustworthy individuals who offer their services for free, but some may charge a small fee. Tipping is entirely optional, but it is considered customary to tip the middleman for his time and service. Tips are usually around 2%. But some middlemen do charge.
  • Some /r/dota2trade moderators are active middlemen and will respond to your request for help via modmail. Message the mods if you need someone!
  • SteamRep middlemen are community admins who represent their respective communities, but will usually middleman for just about anything.
  • Dota2Traders also has a list of middlemen.
  • If you can't find one, wait until you can! Do not rush a deal, or you might end up getting scammed, and there's nothing anyone can do about it at that point. Steam support has zero pity for items lost to most scams these days, especially if it's heavily implied that you were selling for cash.

This is a typical profile for a MM

Usually any official MM will have these :-
  • A Green Badge on Steamrep
  • A lot of game time
  • A lot of items in their inventory
  • High worth inventory. Use Steam Tools[steam.tools] to verify this.
  • Lot of rep on their rep thread.

Once the details have been figured out, the transaction should go as follows:
  • Group chat is opened with all parties involved.
  • Check everyone's profiles to make sure that there are no impersonators or fake middlemen.
  • Seller then sends the items to the middleman.
  • Buyer then sends the agreed upon amount of funds to the seller over the preferred medium. See sub points below for further clarification. Please note that Skype screen share may be required for some of these:
  • Seller confirms that the cash has arrived as expected. If there is a dispute about the amount, fees, or whether the payment has arrived, the middleman holds the items until a resolution has been reached. Concrete evidence is required from both parties to determine who is telling the truth, or if there is a rare glitch in the system.
  • Middleman then sends the items to the buyer.
  • Exchange +rep on rep threads and/or profiles and/or reddit threads.
  • Tipping is customary and to stiff your middleman is considered very rude. These people volunteer their time and efforts to ensure you trade as safely as possible.
  • It is at this point that you may all part ways with the transaction complete.

These are a list of valid MiddleMen. To be on the safe side, always insist on a MM from the following only.
Different Payment Methods
Its worth noting the various payment methods in use by various traders.

Paypal
(This section is taken from i7| Jing's guide https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QXU8PgP-gM2wWRJONeDX7HRuI4Ct4ytEcrvVeREETiE/edit )

Introduction

Paypal (the company) is owned by eBay and is able to manage and control all the payments and transactions that takes place on their systems. They enable people to send money without a financial institution, and the flexibility to pay via their account balances, bank accounts, credit cards or promotional financing.

Paypal is the most commonly used form of payment on Dota2Traders and on many other E-commerce sites. It is also fairly easy to set up and the speed of transferring funds is usually instant. It is also available in most countries and allows people to trade using a wide array of currencies.

However, some of the major drawbacks of Paypal is that Paypal primarily protects the buyer. Even though the money is sent to the Seller via a gift transaction with a note along the lines of “will not chargeback”, there is nothing stopping the buyer from initiating a chargeback. Quite often, the buyer who chargeback’s usually win the case and the seller is left with nothing. The time period until a chargeback is deemed highly improbable is 90 days. Using a middleman does not negate the possibility of a chargeback via Paypal.

Pros of Paypal
  • Easy to create an account and maintain
  • Instant Transfer, can receive the payment within minutes
  • Easy conversion into other currencies
  • Widely accepted payment method of choice for most e-commerce sites
  • No fees to receive money into the account
  • Gift payment fees are extremely small (1% and less for most receiving countries)

Cons of Paypal
  • Susceptible to chargebacks (45 day period where a chargeback can occur)
(Requires checking of steamrep + reputation thread + hijacking)
  • High exchange rate fees
  • Some countries are only able to receive via business or not even available
  • (Ex: Germany)
  • Requires at least 3 or more business days for money to be deposited or withdrawn from the account. (Ex: Canada requires 5-8 business days to load CAD$ onto Paypal)
  • If flagged for too many suspicious payments, Paypal can block the transactions and/or charge extra fees.

Western Union

The Process
To send money via Western Union, you can do so through the internet or by visiting any of their actual branches. Fill out the form which will require you to indicate your name, address, the amount sent and the preferred mode of payment. You also need to indicate the full name, address and contact details of the recipient. You will be given different options to transfer the money as well as the speed of wiring. You will be required to pay a fee equivalent to about 10% of the amount you are sending. After successful wiring, you will be provided with a tracking number, which will also be used by the recipient to claim the cash.

Pros of Western Union
  • Faster money pick up. People who expect to receive money can actually pick up in a matter of minutes after successful wiring by the sender. Western Union is your top choice if you wish to send quick cash or do not wish to go through long processes of identification and claiming. The recipient only needs to present his identification card to receive the cash immediately. Certain city branches also offer home delivery services.
  • More places to pick up money. You can transfer funds in various locations around the globe. Western Union has grown to thousands of branches in almost every country so you can expect to transact in the most convenient manner and expect the recipient to get it on time in their location. Branches are generally open during office hours and weekends.
  • Reliability. Western Union has established its name as a trustworthy and reliable money transferring service provider. You do not have to worry about scams and problems in transferring the cash. Dollars are converted into the preferred currency at the current exchange rate. You don’t need to get any membership to wire cash to someone across the globe.
  • It is almost completely safe for the seller

Cons of Western Union
  • Higher cable charges. There is a price for the convenience and fast remittance. Western Union charges are generally higher more.
  • The disclaimer. Western Union has a disclaimer which indicates that the company will not be liable if the recipient fails to get the goods or if the goods are received in a worse condition. It frees them from liability even if their agents may have been negligent during delivery.
  • Errors in processing of remittance. There are many instances when mathematical errors have been made. People sometimes also experience having the wrong currency exchanged. Others discover that their money has been claimed by a complete stranger. Customer support at Western Union is not known to be the best.
  • Possible use by scammers. Since an identification card and a custom transaction number is all that’s necessary to claim money, Western Union has been used as channel to fund scammers from their victims. In fact, WU is aware of these scams and makes us aware against possible fraudulent transaction.

Skrill
Skrill is like paypal, although it's a lot harder to chargeback. They are a bit more trigger happy in shutting down your accounts. Aside from that, their fees are much more reasonable, but they make their money from the conversion rates. The withdrawals are a fixed cost but it's pretty low. To receive costs nothing. A definite level up from paypal.

Bitcoins
Bitcoin is hard to use due to the volatility. If you're somewhat technically savvy, it's quite a good medium of transfer, costs 4 cents ish to send, but it's not an instant. In order to deem the person has properly received the bitcoins, you need to have the network make at least 2-3 confirmations, which can take 30 minutes or even more. It's easy to use once you get used to it and there are a quite a bit of guides out there that are much better. Problem is a very volatile rate.

A very comprehensive guide on how to start using bitcoins can be found here :- http://redd.it/1rmwbj

Bank Transfer
Bank wires are very secure, but take around 2 or more business days. It depends on where the sender and receiver is. Cost is better than western union, but usually not as cheap as skrill or paypal. It is very hard to do a chargeback for international transfers and often requires the sender to prove in a court of law that it was fraud, hence, not worth it at this level of trading. It's very difficult to use if you're trying to fill out the form as all the information isn't presented uniformly. In general, you need their SWIFT code, bank account number, their bank name, their bank address, the receiver's name, the receiver's address. It's a lot more intrusive and a lot of people actually don't have a bank account.

A very comprehensive guide on how to make a bank transfer payment can be found here :-
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Bank-Transfer-Payment
Chargebacks
A chargeback happens when a buyer asks their card issuer to reverse a completed payment. In which case, the payment will be reversed and the receiver's account will have the funds placed on hold and not have access to it.

Chargebacks are filed outside of PayPal, by the card holder, with their card issuer. The outcome is decided by the credit card company and not by PayPal. Chargebacks are one of the unfortunate risks of accepting card payments.

Common reasons for chargebacks include:
  • The card holder is claiming unauthorised use of their card
  • The card holder is claiming they did not receive the item or the item received was different from the original description.

If you suffer a chargeback on a payment you received, Paypal will email asking you to respond with information. Paypal will use the details you provide to check if you are eligible for Seller Protection and will dispute the chargeback with the credit card issuer on your behalf.

Chargebacks can be avoided by trading with reputable traders. But just to be a bit more safe, it is better to ask them to put the following in the notes :-

This Payment is for Dota2(STEAM) Virtual Goods that was transferred and received already, by http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/xxxxxxx. I agreed Not to Chargeback/Dispute/File an Unauthorized Use.
(The xxxx is the steamID64 of your steam account )

Not that, thats enough to stop anyone from charging back but at least a formal acknowledgement is better off than no acknowledgment at all.
Phishing -Identifying and Avoiding
(This section is directly quoted " as is" from Jimo's Guide -Avoiding Common Trade Scams )

Often times account hijackers rely on deceiving or tricking users into handing out their account credentials. This method is commonly known as phishing, and can be easily avoided by taking a few moments to double check the URL of the webpage you're visiting.

Valve operates the following websites for Steam. If you are prompted with a login page, the first part of the URL within the browser will always be one of the following domains:

https://steamcommunity.com
https://steampowered.com
https://store.steampowered.com
https://support.steampowered.com

AS A RULE OF THE THUMB, DON'T CLICK ON ANY LINKS THAT YOU RECIEVE IN THE CHAT BOXES UNLESS IT IS ONE OF THE ABOVE SITES. ALSO NOTE THE SPELLING CAREFULLY. PHISHING RELIES ON DECEPTION. SO IF YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO READ THE SPELLING OF THE LINK YOU ARE BEING SENT, YOU WILL MOST LIKELY GET "PHISHED"

The following images will help you understand the phishing bots a bit better. If you see the links carefully you see that in each case they are slight deviation from the four listed above. Be extremely wary when clicking links.

Additionally, all official Steam login pages are secured with an Extended Validation SSL Certificate[en.wikipedia.org]. Most modern web browsers will display this in the form of a padlock icon with a green highlight and the text "Valve Corporation [US]" to the left of the address bar.

The most common phishing scams lure victims in with the promise of free items and games. When the user clicks on the link they are greeted with a perfect replica of a Steam website which prompts them to login to continue. Often times the only way to verify their legitimacy is to look at the way the website address is spelled in the address bar. If the URL spelling is not accurate, or it points to a different site entirely, it exists only to steal your account credentials. Additionally Steam will never ask you to upload files from your computer during login. Uploading specific Steam files can allow an account thief to sidestep Steam Guard entirely once they have your credentials.

You can view examples of how the official Steam website URLs look in some of the most common web browsers below.

Some websites offer services which allow you to sign in through Steam. Whenever a website offers this service, the URL of the login page will always be one of the official Steam addresses.

If you're ever uncertain about the webpage you're on, don't type in your credentials. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Some points to remember
  • A list of all the common trade scams can be found here http://redd.it/1lbsnn . Please make sure to go through this to keep yourself updated.
  • Remember to right click the arrow beside the name of a trader you have added and add a Nickname. Write something unique about them. This will allow you to differentiate between people and avoid any sort of impersonation scams.
  • Always consider a rep thread in one these sites only. Dota2Traders[dota2traders.com] , DotaMarket[www.dotamarket.com] and SourceOP[www.sourceop.com] . Read the spelling carefully when someone sends a link to their rep thread. If it is not hosted in one of these sites, its fake.
  • Always check the SteamID 64 when verifying a rep thread. This is a number unique to every single Steam Profile. The custom URL can be faked but this cannot.
  • Never trade with someone marked as a scammer on SteamRep. This might end with a mark on your profile as well saying "Willingly Trading with Known Scammer" which will put your trading career in jeopardy.
  • Always verify the profile of a MM properly and thoroughly before asking them to MM for a trade. Asking them after adding them if they are the real MM will, most of the time, result in your removal from their friend list. Once you are done with the trade be sure to tip them. Although this is not necessary but remember ultimately they are the people who made your trade as safe as possible.
  • Always remember to write a rep on the rep thread once the trade is completed.
