The Bf 109 (sometimes incorrectrly called the Me 109) was the first interceptor and all-round verisitile fighter ever created by the Luftwaffe. Within many years, as british aerial resistence increased, the Luftwaffe feared that the Brits may even overpower them in the skies. With that, Kurt Tank Deswigned the prototype of the Focke-wulf 190, later giving the design to fock-wulf and arado for design. Years the fw 190 would be fighting along the Bf 109s side as a interceptor and fighter bomber-It did so more effectiviely than the Bf 109 but deu to performance issues the Fw 190 could NEVER replac the Bf 109 enitrely, as what was intended for it to do.

Focke-wulf FW 190
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger (English: Shrike) was a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II. Along with its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Fw 190 became the backbone of the Luftwaffe's Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force). The twin-row BMW 801 radial engine that powered most operational versions enabled the Fw 190 to lift larger loads than the Bf 109, allowing its use as a day fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack aircraft and, to a lesser degree, night fighter.






The Fw 190A started flying operationally over France in August 1941, and quickly proved superior in all but turn radius to the Royal Air Force's main front-line fighter, the Spitfire Mk. V, especially at low and medium altitudes. The 190 maintained superiority over Allied fighters until the introduction of the improved Spitfire Mk. IX in July 1942. In November/December 1942, the Fw 190 made its air combat debut on the Eastern Front, finding much success in the specialised ground attack units called Schlachtgeschwader (Battle Wings or Strike Wings) from October 1943 onwards, following the redesignation of all former Sturzkampfgeschwader dive-bomber wings at that time. Althouhg most Soviet pilots considered the BF 109 A greater threat but the Fw 190 proved to be as formidable. The FW 190 served in EVERY theathre as the Bf 109 after 1941, and did so VERY sucessfully. Luftwaffe pilots claimed the FW 190 has similar manuverability but GREATER FIREPOWERas the BF 109. Most German pilots and (war thunder pilots) considered the Fw 190 to have greater manuverability and Firepower than the BF 109 at low-medium alititudes.The Fw 190A series' performance decreased at high altitudes (usually 6,000 m (20,000 ft) and above), which reduced its effectiveness as a high-altitude interceptor, but this problem was mostly rectified in later models, particularly in the Junkers Jumo 213 inline-engine Focke-Wulf Fw 190D series, which was introduced in September 1944 and restored relative parity with Allied opponents. Even though in war Thunder, people say the Bf 109 has greater manuverability the Fw 190( earier versions like the A-4 and A-1) has similar (but not all the way) manuverability but at the same time greater firepower. Players have been observed compensateing for this by using PAGE DOWN and A/D to do wide turns rather than simultanious turning in combat.

The Fw 190 was well-liked by its pilots. Some of the Luftwaffe's most successful fighter aces claimed a great many of their kills while flying it, including Otto Kittel, Walter Nowotny and Erich Rudorffer. Even War thunder pilots even take a liking to the Fw 190's firepower (even I do!)

Fw 190 A-1 nicknamed the shrike-butcher bird[www.allaboutbirds.org]s as they spear smal rodents and animals with thier long pointed beaks. Just as the Fw 190 "Butchers" up enemy aircraft and vehicles with its firepower (as the British viewed it) as the British were the main "victims" of the Fw 190's firepower

]BTW U probably already noticed, german pilots of war Thunder but the FW 190 has 2 large caliber guns, An Auto cannon, a larger MG and a lesser MG. Both operate when u click the LMB but when one runs out of ammo the sencondary one is heard and seen (Fw 190 A-4 only)

BF 109 Messerschmitt
The Messerschmitt Bf 109, sometimes incorrectly called the Me 109 (most often by Allied pilots and aircrew), was a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser during the early to mid-1930s. It was one of the first truly modern fighters of the era, including such features as all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, a retractable landing gear, and was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine.

The Bf 109 first saw operational service during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which time it was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. From the end of 1941 the Bf 109 was supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.



Originally conceived as an interceptor, later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort, fighter-bomber, day-, night-, all-weather fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and as reconnaissance aircraft. It wasnt really used for night purposes and thast where the Fw 190 came in, It was a lesser degree night fighter[en.wikipedia.org].It was supplied to and operated by several states during World War II, and served with several countries for many years after the war. The Bf 109 was the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 airframes produced from 1936 up to April 1945.

The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring German fighter aces of World War II, who claimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52[en.wikipedia.org], mainly on the Eastern Front, as well as by Hans-Joachim Marseille, the highest scoring German ace in the North African Campaign,[4] scoring 158 victories. It was also flown by several other aces from Germany's allies, notably Finn Ilmari Juutilainen, the highest scoring non-German ace on the type with 58 victories flying the Bf 109G, and pilots from Italy, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Hungary. Through constant development, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war. Who finds the fw 190 better....
Some asy the Fw 190 is better becuz it has gretaer firepower, and greater engine control given its raidal engine unlike the Bf 109s. It also has better armor which kinda slows it down. numerous reasons here are some chosen by me and other players based on experience in battle.
  • •Better dive
  • better firepower
  • •Better high speed control
  • •Best rolling rate in-game
  • •Better high speed turn
  • •Better low altitude performance
  • •Better gun-placement if 190 uses gunpods (Wing roots and Engine) (gondola cannons sometimes makes no difference in firepower....)
  • •Better high altitude performance if Dora (Fw 190 D series -Tier 4 or 5)
  • •Much better ultra high altitude performance if Ta-152 (designed by Kurt Tank himself!)
  • good fighter and bomber killers (This I see among players all the time)
  • FW 190s overheat slower but are much harder to cool down (given the Radial engine that cyclists use today)
  • Fw 190's engine is less prone to damage than Bf 109s (based on experience)
  • Bf 109 couldnt keep up with Allied fighter development, reason the Fw 190 was EVEN introduced, and Spitfire VB/trop and Spitrfire Vc put the Bf 109 out of Commission. (only the G-2 and K-4 could actually bring it back)
who finds the Bf 109 better?
Some say the Bf 109 is better than the Fw 190 maybe becuz of it has somewhat better firepower (later versions where cannons can be researched and installed under the wings -F-4, F-4/Trop, G-2,etc.) and the fact that the Bf 109 is a better dogfighter than the fw 190. Here are some reasons why some may find it better;
  • Better Dogfighter than Fw 190
  • More agile
  • Armament and gondola cannons can be installed
  • Record-setting flights set by pilots
  • the type again proved to be an effective fighter during the Invasion of Yugoslavia, the Battle of Crete, Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the USSR and the Siege of Malta.
  • BF109 is more agile and had acceptable armament
  • •Better high altitude performance than EARLY 190s
  • •Better climb than Fw190
  • has more color variety than Fw 190
  • Easier to unlock than Fw 190
what do I think?
I personally find the Fw 190 better since it has better firepower and has better armor than the BF 109 and that helpful when fighting. Being able to survive punishment, and deal out the most punishment. Theres an ongoing debate on the Bf 109 vs the Fw 190 on War Thunder wiki if u wanna join the debate, its here: http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/121689-bf-109-vs-fw-190/ . Plus, the Bf 109 shows the most tendancy to SPIN often (or maybe Its becuz of cruddy joystick) and theres a debate ongoing (or maybe its closed I am not sure...) about that as well....--------->

Plus The Fw 190's SOLE purpose was to REPLACE the Bf 109 completely but due to Bf 109 Cheapness to make and avalibilty, the Fw 190 couldnt replace it entirely. But eventually, the Bf 109 became Obselete in 1942 due to the spitfire VB/trop[wiki.warthunder.com] and Vc. [wiki.warthunder.com]

@Desolator Any Messerschmit aircraft that were designed after 11 July 1938 carried the designation Me. Any aircraft in service that were designed by Messerschmitt AG when it was still Bayerische Flugzeugwerke kept the designation Bf.

@Desolator Nope, Me 109 IS NOT correct, Bf 109 is and the Bf comes from Bayerische Flugzeugwerke.

Ra1derCZ, not sure where you get your information either - the Spitfire Mk IX was considered to be the best fighter aircraft in the entire world when introduced into service...then of course the Spitfire Mk XIV (1943/44) came along, which is still widely considered to be the best prop fighter plane of all time...

What!? Where you get your info.
The Brits havent really had a plane that could match the German planes until the end of the war. The spitfires were there as to put something in the sky to stall the German invasion until they come out with something that can compete.

Me 109 is correct. Messerschmit was the company that made it and any aircraft they made was titled with the prefix Me. Bf is technically incorrect but is the most common and recognizable name.
