Description
This is a simple mod that changes the upgrade path for Lancers to Cavalry. The original upgrade path to Anti-tank Guns makes these units very underpowered for two whole eras.

Q. What does this mod do?
A. The only thing this mod changes is the upgrade path for Lancers. Now Knights and Lancers both upgrade to Cavalry.

Q. Why make this change?
A. Normally the Lancer does not promote until Anti-tank Guns are available. This means that you get them during the Renaissance era and they do not improve during the Industrial and Modern eras. While your Musketmen (combat power: 24) have become Great War Infantry (50) and modern Infantry (70), your Lancers are stuck as Lancers (25).

Now they promote to Cavalry (34) and then Landship (60), just like the Knight.

Q. What happens to Unique Units?
A. Unique Lancers (like the Winged Hussar and Sipahi) should upgrade to Cavalry as well. Ordinary Lancers should upgrade to unique Cavalry (Cossack, Comache) for their respective civilization.

Q. Cavalry is unlocked pretty soon after Lancers.
A. Unfortunately true. Like Great War Infantry and Longswordmen, the upgrade for this unit comes pretty quick. However, it's still a better alternative than not having an upgrade for 800 years.

Q. This mod reminds me of Helios' "Pikemen to Musketmen" mod.
A. That was what inspired me to make this mod! However, changing the upgrade path of Pikemen doesn't fix the uselessness of Lancers themselves, which becomes a problem if a city-state gifts them to you. Furthermore, it was an indirect nerf to civilizations with Unique Lancer replacements (Poland, Sweden, the Ottomans).

i guess what you fail to remember is that lancers were still being used by many nations right upto and including world war 1 and for others upto the start of world war 2 - thier uniforms may have changed but not the way they were created to be used in combat - although some were obviously issued with side arms - but this said not a bad mod

@TheThiefLord I think that is not a bad idea.

maybe it would make more sense if the calvary were unlcoked with rifling or some kind of research having to do with guns. just a suggestion

Maybe Make the Lancer Have 30 Combat Strength and a 20% Attack Bonus So they Can be a Good Offensive unit in the Later Eras but Weak on Defense, Or Make the Anti Tank Gun unlock at Combustion. Or just have it upgrad to an Anti Air Gun as they are genrally more useful than Anti Tank Guns. On or more of these Changes could be implemented. All of then Would Make Lancers not an Absolute Joke as they only have at the Moment 33 Combat Strength v.s. CALVARY They Unit they are Designed to Counter.

that's why I was saying there should have been a unit placed inbetween instead of breaking up the upgrade tree and have to recreate an anti-mounted/armor force

I respect your opinion, but disagree. Lancers are absolutely obsolete because they are so weak in later eras. Furthermore, it makes no logical sense for mounted units to continue using lances when machine guns and fast-firing rifles are on the field.

Instead of turning it into cavalry it should just turn into another anti-mounted/anti-armored unit. It's the only way to keep it balanced. That unit path exists for a reason. Lancer isn't as obsolete as you think because it's meant to deal with cavalry, not great war infantry. It's perfectly balanced for that and can also easily deal with ranged and seige units as well.

This is actually a bit OP if you think about it. While Lancer base damage is less, it also has amazing movement, can move after attacking, bonus versus mounted, and it's own promotion tree. They are meant to turn into anti-tank guns and helicopters for a reason. Because mounted units turn into armored units. By turning all your anti-armor units into armored units you are basically removing a huge aspect to the combat versatility. Especially if you consider how many promotions these units could have if you have been using them since they were spearmen.
