Introduction to R&D History：
The Type 5 hydraulic drive diesel locomotive, with the code name NY5 (N stands for diesel, Y stands for hydraulic drive), is a 4,000 horsepower railway locomotive designed and manufactured by Henschel of the Federal Republic of Germany for a Chinese order. In the 1960s, when electric drive technology had not yet made a breakthrough, many industrially developed countries began to develop higher-power railway traction locomotives to improve railway capacity. At this time, West Germany developed a 4,000 horsepower high-power diesel locomotive, prompting other countries to also begin developing and designing their own high-power locomotives. In the socialist China of the 1960s, after enduring three years of hardship, industry and agriculture recovered rapidly, and the industrial system began to be improved step by step. Among them, railway locomotives were one of the important scientific and technological development goals. In order to achieve a breakthrough in domestic hydraulic drive technology, Chinese technicians began to have contact with various companies in western developed industrial countries in 1961 and made multiple visits to inspect these leading technologies, attempting to learn and improve their own designs. In 1965, after years of inspection and comparison of locomotive conditions in various countries, a transaction contract of $2.5 million was finally signed with Henschel, requiring it to manufacture four 4,000 horsepower hydraulic drive diesel locomotives for China, based on the technology of the V320 diesel locomotive and improved according to the design specifications of China's national railways. In 1967, all four locomotives arrived in China and began testing on domestic railways. During one of the high-speed traction tests on the operating line, the maximum speed reached 157 km/h. At that time, this news spread among the major locomotive and rolling stock factories in socialist China, and technical workers were eager to learn the design concept of this locomotive. Therefore, in 1968, in order to learn and understand the advanced aspects of West German hydraulic drive technology, one of the NY5 diesel locomotives was sent to the Sifang Locomotive Works to survey, map, and analyze the hydraulic drive unit and brakes on the locomotive, and to improve the design concept. This provided considerable inspiration to the technical workers at that time and provided the technical foundation for the Dongfanghong 4 locomotive born at Sifang Locomotive Works in 1969. The improved hydraulic drive unit design was successfully disclosed to other rolling stock factories for further research and development.
