Half-Life: Austria – A Fever Dream in VR (Pre-Super-Early-Alpha Release)

I had a dream. But not the kind of dream Martin Luther King had. It was more of a fever dream during the corona pandemic.

Everyone had their own way of dealing with the challenging lockdown times during the pandemic. In my case, I escaped into the VR world of Half-Life: Alyx to process all the crazy things happening in the media and in real life at the time. And that’s pretty much how my mod, Half-Life: Austria, was born—a mod that enhances the campaign of Half-Life: Alyx with a dose of Austrian humor and countless Easter eggs.

Mod Features / Easter Eggs
Groceries:
Shopping during the first lockdown was an adventure in itself. That’s why I integrated real products from Austrian supermarkets into the game—because why not?

Signs, Posters, and Magazines:
Many textures have been replaced and translated into Viennese dialect. You’ll find everything from subtle hints to clear messages.

Satirical Elements:
Some objects that sparked discussions during the pandemic simply had to make it into the mod. For example, the infamous Ibiza video or Kickl’s notorious corona worm treatment.

Sounds:
The Combine soldiers took a crash course in Viennese dialect. Whether that improves their efficiency is up for debate.
