Daisenryō Kofun· World Wonder

Description
The Kofun period in Japan is attributed to the large number of ancient burial mounds (kofun) built during that period, the largest of which is the Daisenryō Kofun in Osaka. The Daisenryō Kofun is a zempō kōenfun, with a square front part and a square back part that shaped like a giant keyhole when viewed from the sky. The size of the burial mound and the haniwa terracotta clay figurines excavated illustrate the economy and culture of the time when the burial mound was built. This burial mound is considered to be the tomb of Emperor Nintoku. According to legend, during the construction of Emperor Nintoku’s tomb, a deer rushed into the builders and died suddenly, and from the deer’s ear a shrike flew out, hence the place was called Mozunomimihara (the “Shrike’s Ear-Moor”).

“18th day, the day when the construction of his mausoleum was begun. That day, a deer suddenly ran out from the middle of the moor, rushed into the midst of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, fell down, and died. The suddenness of its death causing astonishment, its wound was looked for, whereupon a shrike came out of its ear, and flew away. So on looking into the ear, it was found to be all eaten away. So that is the reason why the place is called Mozunomimihara (the ‘Shrike's Ear-Moor’).”– Nihon Shoki
