Description
Commander,

The Cold War has erupted into open conflict, and the Soviet Northern Fleet is preparing to make a massive breakout from Severomorsk into the North Atlantic.

This fleet, which includes several high-value assets, aims to project Soviet naval power and disrupt NATO’s ability to maintain control over key shipping lanes.

If they succeed, our Atlantic supply lines will be in jeopardy.

You are tasked with a high-risk mission: infiltrate the Soviet departure route, identify and eliminate key targets, and disrupt their breakout. Intelligence indicates that the fleet will be moving at high speed and deploying a wide array of defensive measures.

We expect significant resistance, including escort vessels, submarines, and potentially air support.

Your submarine, the USS Houston (SSN-713), is the only asset in position to intercept. Armed with 16 torpedoes and 8 Harpoons, you must inflict as much damage as possible on the Soviet fleet before they reach open waters.

Once you’ve dealt your blow, retreat north to the designated extraction zone and evade pursuit. This mission is your chance to cripple the enemy’s plans and buy us critical time to reinforce our defenses.

=======================

Your Objectives:

- Identify and engage high-value targets: The Kirov-class battlecruiser, Delta-3 ballistic missile submarine, and Yankee-class attack submarine are your primary targets.

- Disrupt the Soviet fleet: Cause as much damage as possible to slow their advance into the Atlantic.

- Retreat to the extraction zone north of your current position once you have engaged the enemy and depleted your munitions.

=======================

Intelligence Report:

- Soviet Fleet Composition: Intelligence confirms the presence of several key assets:

=Kirov-class battlecruiser: Highly defended and armed with long-range missiles.

=Delta-3-class submarine: A strategic ballistic missile submarine, a high-value target that must be neutralized if possible.

=Yankee-class submarine: A capable attack submarine that could pose a significant threat to your mission.

=Sovremenny-class destroyers, Krivak-class frigates, and additional support vessels are also in the fleet. Expect heavy defensive measures.

- Air Cover: Soviet reconnaissance aircraft and ASW helicopters may be deployed to assist in locating your position once you begin your assault.

- Weather Conditions: Calm seas, clear skies. Thermal layers detected at various depths, which can be used for stealth or evasion.

=======================

Operational Consideratios:

- Engage from range: Use your Harpoons to strike high-value targets from a distance, then follow up with torpedoes. Be prepared to dive deep and evade once your position is revealed.

- Identify targets before committing: Prioritize the Kirov, Delta-3, and Yankee. Taking out these key assets will disrupt the Soviet breakout and slow their plans significantly.

- Escape and evade: After engaging, navigate through the thermal layers and use the terrain to escape north to the extraction zone. Expect intense pursuit from Soviet ships and possibly air assets.

Rules of Engagement:

- Engage any Soviet vessels that pose a threat. Prioritize high-value assets to inflict maximum disruption.

- Avoid detection when possible. Once engaged, the Soviet fleet will attempt to retaliate. Use your stealth capabilities to maintain the advantage.

- Retreat to the extraction zone after your attack. Survive to fight another day.

This mission is critical to our strategic posture in the North Atlantic. The eyes of the US Navy are on you, Commander. Make every shot count, and return home safely.

Good hunting, Commander.

@Ghost_Dance: I never really intended for you to be able to sink every target. If you can torpedo some key targets, excellent. You might not even get torpedoes in with all the RBUs the Soviets will throw back. I made this mission to be extremely hard.

Love this mission but its one of the most challenging I've played in Sea Power. Any tips on the approach beyond what's here?

I find that attacking at range with Harpoons, none of them make it through the AA, but trying to work close enough to attack Kirov with torpedoes means having to speed up to the point where they seem to detect me even when deep and not cavitating.

Thanks for making these missions!
