Forthammer Fantasy

Description
Adds a large variety of things from Warhammer Fantasy, including guns, runes, 5 new civilizations, 9 new secrets based on the lores of magic, as well as many creatures, megabeasts, runes and more.

DFhack is not required, but certain features like runes will not function without it. If using DFhack, place the file "onMapLoadForthammer.init" in the folder ../Dwarf Fortress/dfhack-config/init.

CIVILIZATIONS
  • Ogre Kingdoms: Large, stupid and extremely hungry, the primitive ogres and their gnoblar pets want nothing more than to eat everything in the world. Playable.
  • High Elves: Unlike their wood-dwelling brethren, the high elves live in cities and work with metal and wood. Their craftsmanship rivals that of dwarves, and their unique Ithilmar metal gives them strong and light weapons and armor. Playable.
  • Orcs: Brutish and violent, the orcs love nothing more than a good scrap. Stronger than the average dwarf and more than twice as large, they are a significant threat to any potential mountainhome. They have unique beasts that work for them, called Squigs. Ranging massively in size, they're used as war beasts and mounts. Goblins also use Squigs. Playable.
  • Skaven: Skulking and evil, the mutated ratmen called skaven seek to steal and pillage all they can from the world. They are hidden on the world map, similar to kobolds, but unlike kobolds they pose a large threat. They have a unique rat ogre war beast that they will bring with them on sieges to break down your fortifications.
  • Tree Spirits: The woods walk! Agile dryads and hulking but rare treemen that secrete poisonous sap seek to defend nature by any means necessary. They do not chop trees or farm plants, instead using their natural magic to grow magically strengthened wooden arms and armor, as well as magically grow plants and harvest their seeds. Unlike most other creatures, they don't need food to survive, but they do need water. Playable.
  • Humans: Seeing their new opponents, humans invented a few new things to help them defend against their encroaching neighbors. Steel production, firearms, and a unique "creature", the steam tank help keep their realms secure from invaders.

SECRETS
There are 9 new secrets, each with multiple interactions tied to them. Anyone may learn them, except for dwarves as they are magically inept by nature. All of these secrets can be learned just the same as Necromancy, though they do not grant immortality. Those who know them may stay in their civilization and help it just as a normal citizen would, rather than be driven away like a necromancer.

  • Lore of Life: Regenerate and defend your allies, summon tree spirits to aid you in combat
  • Lore of Death: Sap your opponent's life force and use it to heal yourself
  • Lore of Shadow: Mystify your opponents and attack their minds directly
  • Lore of Light: Banish Daemons and other beings of darkness, and scald your foes with your burning gaze
  • Lore of Metal: Melt your foes with bubbling silver sprays, and transform them into golden statues
  • Lore of Beasts: Transform into terrifying monsters and conjure flocks of giant birds to battle your foes
  • Lore of the Heavens: Glimpse the future and use it to your advantage, and shoot lightning from your fingertips

Lore of Vampires: An alternative form of vampirism that grants access to powerful magic
Daemon Princehood: If you are (un)lucky enough to be chosen by a god of Chaos, you will be transformed into a Daemon Prince, an incredibly powerful creature that is hostile to all mortals

ITEMS
The dwarves have finally figured out the secrets of gunpowder! Handguns, pistols and cannons can all be made at a metalsmith's forge, though cannons are too large to wield and can only be used in the hands of exceedingly large dwarves or as part of weapon traps. Their ammunition is manufactured from a combination of a bullet made of metal, paper, and gunpowder at a craftsdwarf's workshop. Gunpowder can be made at a millstone or quern using saltpeter, brimstone and charcoal. This can then be combined with powderless bullets made at a forge to create cartridges. The guns hit much harder than crossbows, but their ammunition is prohibitively expensive. If you want even more extreme firepower, try grenade launchers! Upon contact with a target, the grenades launched from these weapons will explode violently into a cloud of fire. Another trick up the dwarven sleeve is Gromril, an extremely heavy and durable metal. Outside of a forge, it's immune to even the scalding heat of dragonfire! Do note that the dwarf inside the armor may not be immune to fire, though. Found rarely underground, gromril is extremely valuable, and has a unique use beyond forging weapons and armor...

RUNES
Runes are the dwarven answer to the lores of magic. Blank runes are made at a metalsmith's forge out of Gromril and then imbued with magical powers. Runes greatly enhance the item they're inscribed upon.

Current Runes:
  • Rune of Smiting: Inflicts extreme pain and bleeding upon whomever it hits
  • Rune of Banishment: Has a chance to banish any Daemon or summoned creature hit by it
  • Rune of Strength: Doubles the strength of the dwarf wearing it
  • Rune of Flame: Ignites your opponents upon striking! Can lead to !!FUN!! if not careful.
  • Rune of Speed: Increases the wearer's speed significantly
  • Rune of Fortitude: Massively reduces damage taken by the wearer.

OTHER CREATURES
Alongside all this magic comes the side effects. Daemons of Chaos roam the world, seeking mortals to kill and corrupt. Many types exist, all are dangerous, and all hate dwarves. The majority of them are trapped in the underworld along with the vanilla demons, but some of the larger ones start on the surface as megabeasts.

Dragons in this world are intelligent flying beasts who live thousands of years and grow to immense sizes, though their growth is very slow. These creatures are tamable if you are lucky enough to catch one without it burning down your fortress, just as in vanilla. High Elves have a special connection with them, and often ride them into battle.

KNOWN ISSUES
  • You can make bullets and cannonballs at a metalsmith's forge without gunpowder. Doing so WILL break the balance of the game. Please use the custom reactions if you don't want to steamroll everything.
  • Will crash upon entering arena mode with the DFHack .init file enabled.
  • Artifacts and book bindings can be made from Gunpowder.
  • Steam tanks can cause crashes when pastured.
  • Daemons may automatically flee in adventure mode.
  • Incompatible with Interface Tweaks.
Please report any bugs you encounter and I will do my best to fix them!

CREDITS
Kitfox and Bay12 for the amazing graphics, I mostly remixed the art out of the vanilla stuff.
L'Homme Crabe for their Mountain Orcs mod which I used as a base for the orcs in this mod.
Games Workshop for inventing this setting and all the characters within.

This is my first mod I've ever made, I really hope you enjoy it. It is playable, though some graphics are missing. I plan on adding more features in the future. If you would be interested in helping me with art or have any questions or bug reports, send me a friend request.

I recommend playing this mod with the excellent mod Topples' Lizardmen, it's a better version of Lizardmen than I could ever make.

Warhammer, Warhammer Fantasy, the Warhammer logo, and all associated items belong to Games Workshop. I do not claim ownership over any of their content.

The mod is fully ASCII-compatible, so if you want to play without them go ahead

Back in my day, we didn't even have sprites, and we liked it!

I do like gromril and ithilmar. They are expensive and give you a sink for all the surplus fort wealth, as do occasional weird creatures.

I have said before and will say again, I am not an artist. I didn't like common creatures being blue placeholder creatures, so I threw together what I could. If an artist was to approach me and offer to make sprites, I would be glad to work with them, but until then you can deal with the "placeholder" sprites.

aside from some of the sprites looking very "placeholder", this is one of the most impressive things that's happened in DF modding since masterwork

The dragons in this mod replace the existing dragons in the world. Standard DF dragons don’t appear.

Are the dragons from this mod an edit from vanilla or a "new species" unrelated to the vanilla ones?

Skaven are on the to-do list to make playable. They’re a LOT more complicated to make work in a satisfactory way than the other playable races right now.

Its something you have to be careful of, because there are multiple skaven/ratmen adjacent mods that have been took down of workshop. Its warhammer's most identifiable asset to copyright.

There aren't any 'hidden' playable, races in DF, sometimes the world shuffles the generation a bunch so you get to see some civs more often than others but its not really like that.

Been a doing a little bit of mod hunting, I was wondering if the skaven in this mod is a playable race, i been trying to figure out how to get them to work or any other playable rat race.Is there specific conditions for the skaven need to be met inorder to play as them?

Yes, absolutely. Everything in the mod also works in adventure mode, to my knowledge.
