Invasions from the Deeps

The new Deeps mechanic by CA allows the dwarfs to delve deep…
…This mod adds the old enemies who sleep in darkness, waiting to be awoken.

This new mechanic affects all playable Dwarf factions (vanilla or modded) with access to the Deeps.


On the Campaign Map

When you launch a new campaign, each region is pre-seeded with 1 to 6 invasion events. Starting when you enter the Deeps, an invasion event has a base 25% chance to spawn. The invasion event marker then appears by the settlement and will trigger after a timer of 2 to 5 turns.

You can choose to fight the invasion battle early. This does not reduce the strength of the invasion but may be more convenient.

After all the pre-seeded invasions in a region have been defeated, the region gains a 100% buff to Oathgold production, and no further invasions will spawn.

When you build an entrance to the Deeps, you will see all the buildings in that menu have had a new warning tag added about their effects. Depending on the tier of the building, they can potentially disturb a Strong, Very Strong, or Extremely Strong enemy invasion.

More specifically: if you have only built tier 1 buildings, you will only trigger a Strong invasion. If you have built any tier 2 or tier 3 buildings, you will instead trigger Very Strong or Extremely Strong invasions, respectively.


Invasions from the Deep

Invasion armies always spawn as a 20-stack army (except the dragons). The army will consist of early, medium, or late-game units, all themed around factions and subfactions of daemons, dragons, greenskins, or skaven.

THESE INVASIONS ARE POWERFUL! A vanilla garrison will definitely struggle, so fighting the invasion battle with an army or having reinforcements nearby is recommended.


Additional Bits and Pieces
  • Building the rangers' building in a region will change any invasion timer in that region to 10 turns, instead of 2-5 turns. (Image 4)
  • When upgrading the main deeps building getting that way more slots there is a 1/4 chance that a enemy encampment building spawns. These encampments cause various negative effects, and dismantling them triggers an invasion battle (these battles don’t count against the pre-seeded invasion count).
  • This mod also connects the Deeps mechanic to the Underway mechanic. When you build the Grand Entrance Halls (a tier 3 building) in the province capital, you will then have access to that underway node. The regions affected are Karag Orrud, Karak Hirn, Karak Vrag, Khazid Irkulaz, Karak Azul, Karak Zorn, Karak Dum, Zhufbar, and Kraka Drak.

Because this mod relies mainly on scripted events, it should be compatible with everything up to and including overhauls.

FAQs

Does the AI use these mechanics?

No, the AI will never be invaded. The poor AI would get wrecked, and it isn’t good enough at investing in the Deeps to be comparable with the Player.

What happens to the Underways’ mountain home?

I was waiting for the last DLC to see if dwarfs would get a Deeps-like mechanic, and they didn’t. So I worked on making the mod way, way, way better, including a generic hero Master Miner that would spawn in the underways settlement (instead of stealing from Oxyotl he has VO and was waiting for the VO to be implemented since it is quite the process). Anyway, CA released the Deeps in the last patch so my mod that was finished just waiting for VO is now scraped, and I removed 90% of it, just leaving the invasions and the ability to unlock more Underway teleportation by building the Deeps, that is what happen to the previous idea mod.

this was one of my favorite mechanics in my last chorfs campaigns, loved it so much i'm adding it to my current dwarf game.

its low-key amazing for farming experience for a newly recruited lord/hero/army etc.
just park em in a settlement with empty deeps, and you wind up with 'encampment' buildings spawning regularly enough that you can usually get 1-2 battles per turn, with garrison support if you need it. before you know it, that new lord and army are nicely levelled up to begin retaking more mountain halls!

Warning! the army's this mod spawns can be really ridiculous and stupid so be prepared for it before using it and potentially wasting a campaign. I just got an invasion with 20 dragons with some truly crazy stats + completely immersion breaking as the dragons are named and duplicated many times, so i got 3 dragons called gordinar and another 3 called bruwor (and many other duplicated ones) attacking me (I wonder how did so many dragons fit under a single mountain?). Thankfully disabling the mod and loading a save right before the army spawns worked.

Wow! Currently at turn 50 something using this mod and it really makes for a interesting game. Forces you to build tall if you want to use the deeps and really manage your lands more. I get a lot of daemons vs skaven and greenskins but that is fun too.

Hello, ty for this mod ! I got a bug, where the event marker appears, but the invasion army never spawn. Yet, i got a skaven army after destroying an "encampment building" as expected.
I don't see wich mod i have may interfere, and the bug persist even after disable all of them.
It was a new campain too.
