ХАЗ 52 - 97к был создан на основе ХАЗ 52 - 80, от которого унаследовал общую компоновку. Среди основных отличий — более мощный и экономичный мотор ХМЗ -14-2 и широкопрофильные шины с системой централизованного регулирования давления.

В июле 1965 года ХАЗ 52 - 97к был поставлен на конвейер Химельского автомобильного завода , с 6 августа 1965 года началось массовое производство, всего было выпущено почти 82 тысячи автомобилей этой модели. С учётом шасси и специальных машин, до прекращения производства в 1989 году было выпущено 160 732 автомашины семейства ХАЗ 52 - 97к и ХАЗ 52 - 97к1.

В 1975 году ХАЗ 52 - 97к был награждён Государственным знаком качества СССР. Среди водителей автомобиль получил неофициальное прозвище «Пъяница» за слабую управляемость при нажатой педали газа и постоянное виляние.

Taking into account the chassis and special vehicles, 160,732 cars of the HAZ 52-97k and HAZ 52-97k1 families were produced before production ceased in 1989.

In 1975, the HAZ 52-97k was awarded the USSR State Quality Mark. Among drivers, the car received the unofficial nickname "Drunken" for its poor handling when the gas pedal is pressed and constant swaying.
