Custom Games and How To FInd Them

This covers the basics of what kind of special custom game modes exist and how to find them as well as a short persuasive piece on why vanilla or solo players should try it out.

What is a Custom Game

Any game that diverges significantly from regular game play. This is usually modded but doesn't have to be it just has to alter the goals or game play that players experience.

Examples include game modes where there are entire cities and fields built onto a dry land map with functioning artillery and trains and helicopters but also more simple death runs, juggernaut survival, and prison modes too.

How to find them

Most custom games use Mission or Sandbox, so disabling the campaign will likely show you what custom games are available. However, this only shows you most of them and that's if they are hosting depending on the time and current trending game mode you will see different things pop up. Middle East, Dam Defense, and Combine Assault are reliable and easy-to-understand modes that you might find at the time of writing this. Generally, though you will need Discord, in the public undertow Discord in looking-for-crew you may sometimes see people hosting strangely named games which will be custom. An important mention is this does not include campaigns that are heavily modded as it still revolves around the game's base goals. There are also discord servers listed on the main server and many custom games servers can be found there. Unfortunately, many other custom game servers have little to no advertising so you will have to ask around for links and help. Some servers may be partnered with others and some may have a custom community newsletter in it to help you, but you might just have to ask people who you think you often see in custom game servers for help.

Why should you care

The experiences in custom game modes vary wildly and sometimes are the sole reason some people play this game or are what stops people from refunding the game. Some people believe if it was meant to be, it would be vanilla and that mods dilute the experience however this isn't about modifying your experience but offering you a new one. You already bought the game and mod support is part of it so why not enjoy what might as well be considered bonus games in and of themselves?

There are bad hosts and not that fun game modes but that is honestly quite rare, most servers have active communities and full servers dedicated to just that mode, which rarely if ever get hate even from people who would typically grief. I personally have only seen maybe 5 bad admins in 3 years and have only myself had to ban somewhere between the numbers of 3 to 7 griefers and they were probably the same people on different names

If you decide to join a server be sure to use the subscribe to all button as it is not only faster but prevents lag and crashing, if you don't enjoy the experience feel free to message a community member like me to see if you just got unlucky with a bad apple or if maybe that mode was just not your taste. I will try to recommend a couple of fixes to issues you bring up or recommend game modes that better suit your taste. Ultimately, if you feel it's just not fun that's perfectly fine.
