For many people Duels are the ultimate skilltest within Quake Live. With no team to back you up, no power-ups and no other nonsense it provides the purest shooting experience imaginable. That being said it is also probably the scariest mode to play and newcomers struggle in gaining a foothold, as it can be quite overwhelming.

For me and many others good item control constitutes the solid basic of how to succeed at dueling and it is simultaneously the skill which is the easiest to practice. So I made the decision to teach you the fundamentals here.

What I found surprising is how hard it was for me to actually play the match while doing thorough commentary. Especially the jump over to the yellow is something which I normally do with ease and screwing it up constantly in the video is quite embarrassing for me. I hope you don't mind.

Two things that I forgot to mention: you should set your match timer to "count up" and enable time stamped item pickup messages. Both will make timing the items a lot easier.

And please note that all of this was filmed inside bot games. That way it is easier to provoke certain situations that I want to showcase. Also I don't have to focus on the match too much because quite frankly the bots are no threat whatsoever.
