Keihan 13000 Series / 京阪13000系

The 13000 Series (13000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Keihan Electric Railway.

Manufactured since 2012, the 13000 series is the latest generation of vehicles introduced to the Keihan network. Composed of a lightweight aluminium body and adopting the more efficient VVVF control method, energy consumption is lowered by approximately 35% compared to 1960s-80s era vehicles with this type was designed to succeed. Therefore, it was estimated that for every 20 cars replaced, the overall power usage on the entire Keihan network would be reduced by 1%. The 'crescent moon' front design of the 3000 series limited express vehicles is inherited, and the exterior is painted with Keihan's new livery which was also retrofitted to older types. The 13000 series are arranged in sets of 4, 6, 7, and 8 cars, with the length of formations easily adjustable by adding or removing middle cars. The 4 car sets entered service first on the Uji and Katano lines, 7 car sets followed on the Nakanoshima, Ōtō, and Keihan Main lines in 2014. 6-car trains appeared in 2021 and are also used on the Keihan Main Line system. 8 car trains are not a standard consist, but have operated since 2017 via inserting 1 middle car into a 7 car formation from another 7 car formation. The remaining 6 cars of the other formation are operated on the system's branch lines (Uji and Katano lines), with this arrangement typically adopted during peak hours. 113 cars have been produced per the latest data, the number also includes 6 modified 3000 series vehicles which have been incorporated. Delivery of the 13000 series was split into several batches stretching a period of 10 years, differences between each batch are minimal if any. Keihan has not announced an end in production and it is probable that more vehicles will be introduced in the near future.
