Description
The E131 Series (E131系) is an EMU operated by JR East in the Kantō region.

Designed for regional commuter lines on the periphery of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, the E131 series is a modern general type DC train that supports one-man operation. Announced in 2020 and entering service the following year, the base 0 series replaced older 209 and 211 types in the Chiba area. It was the first new rolling stock operated in the Bōsō train district in 51 years, as it was typical for outer metropolitan lines to receive older surplus units transferred from Tokyo's main commuter lines. The E131 series was designed with wider seats and a more spacious cabin to improve passenger comfort and reduce congestion, it also have a 4 door per side layout matching other rolling stock in the region, in preparation for future installation of platform screen doors. The 0 series were manufactured in 2 car sets, which can be coupled up to 6 cars. In 2021 the E131 series would also be introduced to the Sagami Line as the 500 series subvariant, which were fixed 4 car sets. The Utsunomiya Line and Nikko Line would see the 3 car 600 series entering service in 2022, while the 1000 series with a narrower car width would be produced for the Tsurumi Line in 2023. In total, 141 cars have been manufactured to date, it is uncertain whether the E131 series would be introduced to other lines in the future.
