History and Use
General Idea:

The P51 was used in Europe Battles against Germany and USSR. The USAF at that time was assisting Britain and France from the German Luftwaffes. The Mustang squardons were used mostly for defenses like Paris and offence missions like Battle of Berlin and Ruhr. A disadvantage that Mustangs had that time was facing the first German jets, the Me 262's, which had the fastest engine in history and better bullet use. Therefore, Mustangs were always travelling with B-17 bomber escorts so they can guard and prevent the powerful German Jets from intersecting their path.

Development and Prototype:

Believe it or not, the idea or the prototype of this beast was first founded in Britain and not in USA. In 1940, the British RAF was in need for patrol aircrafts that could create critical damage against the Luftwaffe. At that time, the legendary P-38 Lightning was in charge( fact: only 8 Lightnings exist today), but the issue was that the plane was slowly going outdated and the German interceptors were much more evolved.

The purpose of the Mustang was to have the same properties as the Lightning but not be part of the Heavy Fighter's family. A high speed fighter with a long range gunfire was the perfect idea to start the new project.

In October of 1941, the first ever prototype for this idea was the NA-73X prototype (X stands from Experimental). The machine was so promising that production started earlier than expected.

First ever prototype and design of NA-73X

In 1942, the USA started familiarizing itself with the plane as signed a contract back in 1940. The test pilots were so impressed by the plane that a new type was created. The P-51A was the official release of this new branch. The purpose of it was to compete the legendary Spitfire which was the most common aircraft used in defense operations.

At that time, the USA was in the middle of the Pacific Wars where the Japanese had the deadly "Zeros" as their main bird machine. The Kobra family(P-39,P-400,P-40E,P-63) were the patrols used on Midway and other islands that were attacked daily by the ♥♥♥♥.

The plane that dominated the Pacific Battles of WWII, the Kobra

USA started taking part on the European battles where the scene was chaotic for them to send planes that were meant for low attitudes and small battles. In October of 1942, the USA created the Mustang Piece P-51X which was going 30MPH faster than the Spitfire MK V. The British flight-tested the Mustang X in October, and found that the experimental craft significantly out-performed the Allison at high altitudes, generating 200 more horsepower at 20,000 feet and almost 500 more HP at 30,000 feet. While the British research was valuable, the American Merlin Mustang program proceeded almost independently.click here for full article: http://acepilots.com/planes/p51_mustang.html

Basically the main use of this plane was in European Battles in places such as Paris defence, Berlin attack, Flying Fortress Escort, Ruhr and lastly The Korean War. It was one of the only propeller machines which took part at the Korean Battles. It was strong enough to encounter USSR mighty jets such as MiG-15 which was the strongest plane at the time.

Inspection and Specifications:

Evolution from Prototype to Final Product

The Mustang had a lot of new designs during the war. At first, it had an edgy structure that prevented it from reaching high speed and altitudes. It required a lot of power and time to make a single 180 degree turn, even though it was still one of the top maneuverable planes.

The P-51D Mustang had a more rounded design that had less air friction and lowered the G-Force of the plane while making maneuvers.

The engine was replaced with a Merlin engine, instead of an Allison V-1710, which was used in a Spitfire. This reduced the turning time and force and allowed higher speed while climbing giving it a significant higher altitude.

One significant change was the relocated carburetor air intake, from above to below the nose. This gave more air input to the engine which adds more work in the propeller. At that time, the plane could out-perform almost any British patrol fighter including Spitfire and Tempest. Duels against Fw's became much easier as it could out-turn it in matter of seconds.

Here are the specifications of the Stallion 51 (find full article HERE![www.stallion51.com])

Honor and History-Marking:

The use of the plane was fading away as the revolution of jet-engine aircrafts started rising and many countries competed each other on who will make the deadliest flying jet acer. The project was comming to an end as it served an important time in WWII and parts of the Cold War. At this time, the Mustang received a lot of respect and honor from the military.

P-51 Mustang in the Game
Alright, now we are done with the brief summary of the aircraft in real life. Now let's get to the game part.

The game in constantly updating the model in almost every update.

In December of 2013, when the update 1.39 came out, the aircraft had significant changes as it got weaker dramatically. The range was completely out of proportion and the maneuvering had no effect in any combat situation. It was a huge disappointment for a lot of Mustang users as it was one of the common planes used.

In 2014, in the update 1.41 it got buffed by increasing a lot of its statistics.

Here is the American Aviation Tree which includes 6 Mustangs in total(version 1.51):

In Jan 2018 (update 1.75), a new P-51 was added, as well another clone-like P-51, the A-36 attacker. Definetely the stats of each plane and BR have changed, making players adjust their gameplay:

As you can see, the range in ranks is in between 3 and 4. Here is also the modifications used for the aircrafts:

It is always recommended to first get the Fuselage Repair Modification because it upgrades all your stats at the same time(more speed, less turning time, less weight, higher rate of climb). Then, you might want to research the Offfensive 12mm so you can now select the appropriate bullets so you can avoid using the default ones. At the end, you can research everything in order but it always depends the type of mustang you're researching.

Let's inspect every mustang one by one with its unique characteristics.

1)P-51 Mustang:

Here are it's statistics(click image for better view):

This is usually the first mustang American Pilots recieve first in the game(unless you get the premium ones). It is a rank 3 aircraft with a lot of capabilities. This mustang differs a lot from the other one due to its unique cannons. It carries 4x20mm Mk.II Cannons which can easily destroy enemies in just a few milliseconds if you make the right hit. Some pilots prefer this Mustang for its attacking methods, but as of flight performance, it's weak and slow. You will have a hard time controlling it and trying to turn the first times if you do not upgrade it.

Recommended modifications to upgrade is the flight performance and survivability. You do not need new cannons yet. The default bullets are good enough for combat. Also, try not to overheat your cannons too often, because the reloading time takes up to 30-40 seconds in AB(not upgraded) and can waste a lot of precious time. Also universal bullets are recommended due to their increase in range, RPM and damage.

Rockets and bombs for this aircraft are not available or needed at all. This plane specializes in pursuit attacks and early interceptions. When used in AB, I personally use it first, so I can make my first blow with it. Since everyone usually uses their good aircrafts at first, I use this one so I can get rid of it and at the same time make a great starting performance as a fighter.

P-51D-5 Mustang:
P-51D-30 Mustang:

Now this is when stuff get pretty serious. You are one tier up than the previous one which means a whole new level of combat and war machines. They have a more aerodynamic structure where they can reach up to 900 KPH. The turning is perfect and smooth. Climb rate is significantly high, as you reach the clouds in a few seconds. They can also withstand 14 Gs and wings on realistic do not break easily when in high speeds.

The weaponry includes default 6x12.7mm machine guns with 3 on each wing. The accuracy is almost perfect as you can easily aim your target. Recommended bullets for Mustangs D-5 and D-30 are universal or tracers. Tracers are basically fire bullets which means you can easily set on fire your target and its especially good against Japanese aircrafts. Stealth bullets are exctremely recommended if you can trust your shooting skills in RB. Since they have 6 machine guns, the aircraft is able to shoot 6 bullets per shot, which makes it harder to miss.

Bombs can be used a lot with these two if you are into bombing in AB. You have a load, you drop it and then you enter dogfight mode. Bomb accuracy is good as it can carry up to 2x1000lbs bombs.

The P-51D-30 is usually the most used Mustang currently. For RB, it climbs extremely well and can satisfy a lot the player in combat. It also has a balanced BR, so you won't be uptiered on playing up against high-end jets and bombers. It is just right for a Mustang lover for AB, RB and SB.

F-82E Heavy Fighter:

This plane is special. Believe it or not it is faster than any other Mustang. It also has +30% more climb rate than the regular Mustangs do. Problem is, it is one of the hardest planes to maneuver. It was voted one of the worst planes when it was released. It could catch on fire with just one bullet. The armor was so thin that it seemed impossible to fly it. In 2015 they buffed the hell out of it, but that doesn't change for making it the first target on a match. If you use a F-83E you will most likely be the first target for your enemies. It is so easy to shoot one down if you do not know how to use it.

First thing you want to upgrade is your Flight Performance. Your priorities is speed and turning force. The F-82E consists of 6x12.7mm machine guns. You can add another 8 of them, so in total you can have 14x12.7mm machine guns.

P-51H-5-NA:

What is to be said to be the greatest Mustang in the game. It has the highest BR and greatest flight performance. Its weakness in RB can be its climb rate. When in stock, the plane is painfully playable in RB. Once you get to upgrade it, performance and combat is much better and gets to live up to its reputation. What makes it different is its higher BR(6.3), making it queue up for matches with jet aircrafts.

P-51 Mustang in the Game: Premium Content
So if you really like Mustangs, try take the premium root where you can get 2 American Mustangs or 1 British if you are at the British Aviation. There is no major difference in flight performance or combat style in each of them. They might be better or worse by a minor difference. Their purpose is to provide premium content for the game and aid players in boosting their progression in research and currency.

Premium level: Wetmore's P-51D-10 Mustang (not in tech tree):
Wetmore's Mustang is practically the same as the D-5 and D-30. So no explanations here. On update 1.57, it was removed. It was only available from a bundle purchase. It is also occasionally available to be bought in warbonds, just like every other premium aircraft/tank.

Note: The picture looks different, because I screenshoted it back in 2-14, when the UI was different)

Premium level: P-51D-20 NA Mustang:

This is a great Mustang for players who want to progress faster on their tree and have a great experience in combat overall. Currently, it is in between the D-5 and D-30 as of stats. It is not so different in gameplay, so it's just for Mustang lovers and players who want to research faster with a premium one. In updates before 1.57, it used to be superior, which was the must-get American Aircraft for rising to the top fast.

Premium level: British Mustang Mk. IA

It is the Tier 3 (BR:3.7) Mustang in the British Aviation. Not so recommended for flight performance, but becomes deadly when shooting. I personally have never played with it nor own it so I cannot give any feedback from experience. Many users have complained for its overheating. Definetely not recommended for RB or SB, but can be used for farming in AB. What made it so special on its release was the concept of adding 20mm Hispano cannons on an American Pursuit Fighter.
Design of Aircraft: How can this help?
So the design of the aircraft would change frequently for many reasons. Most important ones are to give better flying performance. This includes factors like:
  • Friction
  • Speed
  • G-force
  • Turning Force
  • Weight

Different shapes, modifications and characteristics will be analyzed in this section to better understand how the design affects the physics of the aircraft. Here is the main design of the mustang.

Image taken from: http://www.daveswarbirds.com/usplanes/aircraft/mustang.htm

The picture above shows the basic design of two types of Mustangs.

Canopies:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51DK/P-51DK_01.htm

The Mustang B has an edgy looking canopy(Malcom Hood), while the Mustang D has a more round one(Teardrop canopy). It provides a complete view for the pilot to even have the ability to see behind. Also, rounded canopy can reduce friction, which allows the aircraft to increase its speed.

Wings:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51DK/P-51DK_01.htm

Mustang B has 2 .50 cals and they are not alligned. This can unbalance your precision and have a bigger uncertainty of missing a shot. Mustand D not only has perfectly aligned machine guns, but it has +1 extra, which means 6 in total(both wings). Also, they replaced the ammo box with 400 rounds each, instead of just 280. This could fix some jamming or overheating problems, which increased the survivability and endurance during combat.

Radiators and Colling System:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51BC/P-51BC_02.htm
The radiators help the engine give full potential. But overheating can give some severe problems. Adding a cooling system helps reduce overheating and increase its performance. In WW2, copper radiators were made, making the aircraft heavier. Nowadays, aluminum radiators are made for better cooling effect and lighter when carrying.

Nose Development:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51BC/P-51BC_02.htm

Giving the nose an extra space for air maximizes the engine's capacity. It allows more compression of air in the supercharges.

Sight and Aiming:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51DK/P-51DK_01.htm

So sight is really important for an aircraft (in the real world of course). Especially one like the Mustang that concentrates a lot on precision and accuracy. Here is a comparison of the old N-9 Gun Sight with the new K-14 Gun.

Sight:

Image taken from: http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51BC/P-51BC_02.htm

So in conclusion, they made a sight that let's you point exactly at your target and allowing you to not have a delay. This means that you do not have to aim further in order to hit your target, which of course this needs a lot of time and effort to think during a fight where should you hit in order to get your target down.
Inspecting Gunfire and Parts
Now let's go to the weaponry. Let's explain briefly for all Mustangs the appropriate bullets used for different situations. Comparisons will made with the default ammo.

In 2017, 50cals browning guns were upgraded. American Mustangs are known for being equiped with them, as they are also the standard for almost any American aircraft. This update became quickly favourable for USA players. It was easier to penetrate enemy armor, which neglects the increasing demand for more 20mm American planes in the game.

Default:

So default ammo is the first ones you get to use when you get a plane. They are average armor-piercing bullets with a low density and can run out quick.

Tracers:

It has lower penetration by 1mm compared to default ammo and smaller range. Good thing is that you have higher bullet density, bigger mass and velocity. This allows you to light your enemy on fire and constantly keep shooting at him. Also the amount of ammo is larger.

Universal:

The range is the same, but in the 30 degree angle, the universal can be more effective. It has better penetration, but it also includes tracers. This type of bullet is used for many purposes. It is recommended for cannons of 20mm and over.

[h1Ground Targets:[/h1]

They have same range, but they have variety of types of bullets. From tracers to armor piercing(incendiary and normal). They are used for target such as AAA's, small tanks and bombers.

Stealth:

It does not have a variety of shells and racks, but it can do a lot of damage. First of all, it can not be seen. So if you are shooting at someone in front of you and you miss, he will not realize it until he sees that you are behind him. Your enemies will never know that you are shooting, unless they hear it, which is possible in only a certain distance.

Which ones should I use for mustang?

I suggest tracers since they have a lot of unique features, but use those if you dogfight. If you are in realistic and simulator, use stealth, if you are good at aiming. If not, use universal. If your targets are bombers and heavy fighters, use ground targets.

Still don't understand bullets? Use this guide to study them more in detail: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=299652011
Armor and Penetration
So the Mustang has a pretty normal Armor thickness. It ranges between 6.35mm to 15.87mm. This means that it can effectively withstand 7.62mm and somewhat 12.7mm bullets. It always depends on the angle and effectiveness.

Mustangs were known for their lightweight, but effective armor. Wings were hard to tear apart and the overall structure could withstand leaks and sudden fire bursts.

Crew Selection: What should I upgrade?
Analyzing Combat Situations
Alright, so as mentioned before. The Mustang has a pretty high speed, good turning force, high climb rate. So basically the Mustang is an average plane in the game, which has no low or high values. It is the plane that combines every skill.

But there are some more details we need to go over. The Mustang has some special capabilities that need to be analyzed.

Death from above:

If it's up against airplanes that can climb higher than a Mustang can, it is suggested you stay in low altitudes and gain up a lot of speed. This is because you can turn easier when you have higher speed(ex:600KPH) than you can with lower speed(ex:300KPH). In fact, when you are at 300KPH you can hardly move and you are a big target for the planes that dive right on you. So when there is an enemy above you, try to have a steady and normal speed so you can do your maneuvers easier.

It is also recommended you do barrel rolls and steep turns when you are being attacked from above. So the player who is trying to target you, will have a harder time trying to track you down. When you dive vertically it is almost impossible to control your turning. And you might make him crash if you are not that high from the ground.

Diving killing spree:

Who doesn't love dive killing. You have so much potential of killing anyone who is bellow you, because you know you are faster and they might not even see you. If you are planning to do that, try to have your engine thrust to 100% when you are close to your target. Let's say when you are 1.2KM away from it. This will allow you to turn without loosing control once your target sees you diving from above. You will lock your aim without loosing him from your sight. Only thing you don't want to happen is this...

Image taken from: https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/208471-any-comment-about-heavy-bombers-in-rb/
Crashing USA Bomber.B-24 Liberator

Dogfight:

Take advantage of your maneuvers. Just turning on won't help you win. Let's say someone is behind you and you wanna get rid off him. What is easier to do? In this situation, you can do a 180 degree turn, but lower your height a little bit while doing so. Not only he will miss you from his sight, but he cannot turn fast enough if he is planning to turn at 180 degrees to 360 degrees. Check the trigonometric circle bellow to picture the vectors of the turns.

Imagine this is the enemy's pilot view with the circle in the middle.

Let's say the blue arrow is where you turn at(3rd quadrent of the circle). If he attempts to turn in that direction he will mess up his controls. The planes are not designed to turn in angles like this while flying horizontally at the same axis as the ground. If the enemy wants to make the same turn, he has to turn sideways his plane first in order to turn correctly. By you going vertically down at the same time, he will miss any shot. So the trick is to turn within the 3rd and 4th quadrent(180-360 degrees).

Now let's say you are on his place. He turns like that and you are trying to turn as well. Press the turn button(A) to change your angle, then aim with your mouse to your target. Not only you turn faster, but you are still locking your aim on him.

Combat: Realistic and Simulator Battles (RB,SB)
Comparing: Who is stronger/weaker?
Alright, so let's compare it to other nations. In order to do that, we select the country's most common fighters and try to find their weak spots and how to take advantage of them.

First of all, itself. Can a Mustang kill another tier 4 aircraft, for example The F8Fs. The F8F has a really small turning time, which is almost impossible to out-turn. If you are up against a F8F-1B you are doomed for sure. Not only it has better damage as well(4x20mm cannons), but it is faster and has higher battle rating.

Germany:
Can it kill German interceptors such as the Fw's and Bf-109's? The answer could be yes or no, but it is bias. There are some factors that can give an uncertain result. German airplanes have a high altitude and heavy gunfire. So what you need to do is stay in low heights and make the dogfight based on turning and maneuvering and not diving. German airplanes do not have as good maneuvers as USA ones do. With the techniques listed above, such as the dogfight, you can kill german planes in no time. Just try not to stay on their aiming target. They have incredible fire and it is almost impossible to survive it.

Image taken from: http://videogamesuncovered.com/features/microtransactions-the-ugly-in-the-games-industry
Luftwaffe power

USSR:
Can it kill USSR Yak's? Totally, but here is where you have to be expert with your bullet change. USSR airplanes can survive almost any bullet. They have a thick armor and they are famous for their 37mm and 45mm cannons. Those are with no doubt a 1 shot kill. So not only they have good armor, but they are one of the strongest firing machines in the game. Universal or Armored Targets bullets will help a lot. Hitting the engine will light up on fire the enemy Yaks. They are also heavy(the Yaks) so making them loose in a maneuver fight is not that hard to do. Mostly focus on engine and maneuvering.

Britain:
Can it kill British Spitfires? Hmmm, here is when it gets a little bit tricky. The Spitfires not only are one of the fastest turning airplanes in the game(except biplanes), but the latest of them have heavy gunfire(4x20mm cannons). It is impossible to out-turn them and survive their gunfire. One thing you can do is outrun them. You are faster than they are. Maybe by being behind them and trying not to focus on turning is one of the few choices where you can win. Or else, you will become a dead bellend who died by the Tommies.

Here is a complaint forum for Ubisoft for making the German Characters in Blazing Angels repeat "Tommies und Yanks!" every 30 seconds in the game.
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/421654-tommies-und-yanks!-Forums

Japan:
Can it kill the ♥♥♥♥? Light 'em up on fire and you will have fresh sushi for dinner. Japanese airplanes are so easy to light up on fire. If they are lit up, extinguishing is nowhere possible. But never EVER...try to win a maneuver fight. It's like a suicide mission.

Equality to the game: Battle Rate
Customization
Final Step: Does it appeal to me?
So this is where you have to decide. Does this plane really fit my way of playing? Do I like playing with it? Or I read all this guide for nothing because it includes non-sense analyzing for no reason? I mean yeah, it's just a game, but there are so many guides that use the same format to explain parts of the game. And they successfully do so.

If you think this plane is the perfect combination for you, then you are welcome and you are now ready to use it.

If you think this plane does not appeal to you, then experiment yourself with other airplanes. Experimenting yourself is always better, unless you want to wait until I post another guide about another plane.

As someone who's researched both the P-51 family and the Zeros I can say that Zeros sh*t all over the P-51, pilots eventually just get frustrated and quit boom n zooming or make an error and get shot down. P-51s are cool but there's just better planes out there, amazing guide though! I'd love to see more. Please... Please make more.

P-51H is pretty much the God-King of props. faster than almost all other prop planes until you reach 7.5km, at which point some EXTRA high alt fighters can start to keep up with you, but even there, you hold your own, and at those sorts of alts, you also keep pace with early jets

Indeed! Definetely recommended for WW2 fans. Really good mechanics, good cinematic view, amazing voice acting and characters. It is x100 times more intense than War Thunder.

It is there because of its battle rating. It's also an attacker, not a patrol, so even if it's a P-51 look alike, it does not have the same purpose or properties in the battle.
