Topples' Halflings

Description
Halfling Civilization
A playable civilization consisting of a society of halflings. What are halflings? About half the size of a human. They are a considerably weak race with higher than normal social capabilities. They tend to lack the great ambitions that characterize larger peoples like humans, busying themselves with being epicures and enjoying the smaller things in life.

This is a civilization that is half-based on generic fantasy halflings and half-based on hobbits. They are unable to mine into rock and can usually only dig through the first few layers of soil to build their hovels. They have a new quarry that allows them to obtain a small amount of stone, ore, and gems. They are able to make smoking pipes that grant the ability to smoke pipe-weed. Halflings cannot make steel. This race should be hard to play as and rely on recruitment of stronger races to help defend their settlements. Halflings can appear in your civ as visitors, scholars, or warriors and can join you.

This is a relatively smaller mod compared to my others and serves as my first attempt to make DFHack scripts. It can run without DFHack installed but with fewer features. Namely, DFHack is required to make it so halflings can't mine into rock and also allows some graphics switching. In the future I plan to make mods that can be run without DFHack but use it for more features.

The mod includes:
  • Default and portrait graphics for halfling adults, children and babies, includes weapons, armor sets, and clothing.
  • Unique weapons graphics for both single and dual wielding.
  • Adds halfling language.
  • Portrait graphics using associated human graphics.

Halfling Society Notes
  • Thanes and thanesses are the only halfling royalty. These are subservient to human kings.
  • Shirrifs are the chief law-keepers in halfling society.
  • Bounders are the military commanders.
  • Halflings are poor miners.
  • Halflings are naturally excellent cheesemakers, they become extremely valuable legendary cheesemakers at 100x the rate that a dwarf would!

Notes
  • This mod originally added "Quarry" buildings that halflings could use to get ore from. This has now been moved to the Quarry mod here. To use it, load it after the halflings mod in the world creation mod script.
  • Pipe smoking was also removed. This will be added again as a separate mod soon.
  • I tried making their sprites have the size of humans. As far as I know, in Dwarf Fortress humans are 2m tall, dwarves are about 1.5m tall, so halflings are 1m tall.
  • All halflings wear small clothes.
  • Halflings are small and have to multi-grasp most weapons. Graphics for both multi-grasp and dual wielding are present, but DF currently can't support it, so only some of them are implemented.
  • Some of the graphics used in this mod are modifications of human graphics made by Kitfox devs.
  • The halfling language was generated by Talvieno's language generator.

Feedback
Any feedback is appreciated!

Please report and bugs / crashes that you come across, or let me know if any of the graphics just don't look right and you think I need to give them another go! If your feedback leads to an update, I will credit you below.

I try to make somewhat complex mods with graphics so it does take some time. If you like what I do and feel so inclined, you can donate to my Ko-fi[ko-fi.com].

Feedback Contributors

If you want Quarries with your Halfling fort you need to have the Quarries mod. Be sure to include it below the halflings mod when you are initiating the world.

If I install the halfling mod but not the quarry one, will I still be able to start a halfling fort with a quarry or the quarry mod is a must have?

Thanks for all the updates. I personally like the lack of digging, as it makes the game play differently, and as you mention, it fits with the lore as well. I'm not currently playing a halfling fort, but I did like the option to obtain stone that the quarry gave you.

I've updated the mod to version 1.3.0. It includes new unique portrait graphics and fixes some minor issues.

Let me know if anything is broken (it shouldn't be) or if the graphics look off in certain cases. Also let me know if you have suggestions for balancing.

I also want to ask if you guys think I should keep the dfhack script to keep halflings unable to dig into rock. It seems lore-accurate but it's probably annoying in fortress mode since progression requires digging. I might just separate the script into a separate mod.

Cool. What Halflings lack in strength they make up for in charisma, so they're good at socializing.

How is called a halfling torn in half by a demon?

A quarterling

My dwarves really love the halfling tall tales. All our artifacts just... depict halflings, being struck down by demons. Is it the heroism of the halflings in these stories that captivates my dwarves so?Or is it the sheer brutality with which a demon can tear through an unprepared halfling? Perhaps just the comedy of imagining such a battle is what enchants them so... but that would be pretty disrespectful to our halfling allies. Either way, the halflings leave a presence far greater than their might would imply, with their stories having a major place in the dwarven entertainment industry LOL. May the soap man deity of rivers, Fikuk, forgive us for our cruelty, and blow bountiful bubbles of luck unto our halfling allies.
