Stickers: Let's remember how it was!
29.02.2024

Stickers became part of Counter-Strike long before the second version. Back in 2013, more precisely on November 15, 2013, as part of an update for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the doors to the world of esports opened with the first CS:GO major - "DreamHack Winter 2013". At that time, players couldn't use stickers independently. They received souvenir packages by watching the main tournament in the game. These packages included weapon skins, each adorned with an exclusive sticker on every gun.

It's important to note that the winners of the first major[www.hltv.org] were the Fnatic team, earning an impressive $100,000 in evergreen dollars.

After numerous subsequent updates, on February 5, 2014, developers introduced the first sticker capsule, modestly named the "Sticker Capsule". Players could obtain this capsule as drops after completing matches in the game. Inside the capsule, there was a variety of unique sticker designs, however, upon opening the capsule, players could only receive one sticker, after purchasing a key beforehand.

Stickers could be applied to any weapon in the game, although the placement was limited, as well as the quantity (4 stickers). To emphasize the reliability and innovation of this feature, developers added the ability to manually remove stickers step by step using a scratching method. To completely remove a sticker, players had to scratch it 10 times - this feature remains relevant to this day. Thus, each sticker became not only a decoration for the weapon but also an expression of the player's individuality, highlighting the importance of details in the world of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Then, at the second major, "EMS Katowice 2014", familiar team stickers entered the world of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. As part of the update, developers introduced two sticker capsules featuring logos of all the teams participating in this epic tournament, and these capsules didn't require keys. This was a kind of turning point, as for the first time in a major, team merchandise appeared, and stickers of such legendary teams as iBUYPOWER, Titan, and others, gained "priceless" status.

The next significant step was the implementation of the ability for the community to create their own unique stickers, intended to decorate the virtual shelves of the game. On February 20, 2014, players were endowed with tools that allowed them to creatively express themselves and share their work through the Steam Workshop. This opened the doors for unique ideas and talents within the community, turning them into unique elements in the world of Counter-Strike.

The creative development process in Counter-Strike was in continuous motion, and year after year, new stickers, team logos, and player autographs appeared in the game. Stickers became true works of art, each possessing various rarities:
  • Paper
  • Glitter
  • Metallic
  • Holographic
  • Gold

The release of Counter-Strike 2, which has taken on the mantle of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, did not overlook our beloved stickers. On the night of February 7, 2024, along with numerous innovations, players were given the freedom to creatively decorate their weapons. Now they can freely place and rotate stickers on any item in their arsenal.

If previously the maximum number of stickers on a weapon was limited to 4, at the time of writing this article, this number has increased to 5. This innovation has given players even more opportunities for creative expression of individuality and style in the world of Counter-Strike 2.
