Description
The H100 Series (H100形) is a general-purpose single car DMU operated by JR Hokkaido since 2020.

This type was developed to succeed the aging KiHa 40 series, which had been deployed throughout Hokkaido's regional lines since the 1970s. The H100 series adopts a diesel-electric system based on the GV-E400 Series of JR East, modified to run in the extreme cold of Hokkaido and capable to operate in various snowfall conditions. It was given the nickname "DECMO", and dropped the standard "KiHa" prefix to represent the significant improvements over existing diesel railcars. The interior has a semi-cross design, with half the cabin installed with cross seats in a 2+1 layout, the remainder being long seats. To handle peak hour demand, the aisle between seats are very wide, thus providing plenty of standing space. The H100 series are also fitted with a wheelchair space and an accessible western-style toilet. A total of 127 cars are planned to be introduced, with 99 cars already in service per the latest data. They have gradually replaced KiHa 40s and displaced other types on a number of lines, and are present in all major cities except Hakodate. Some services on the electrified portion of the Muroran and Hakodate main lines are also operated the H100 series to maximise their usage.
