Hanahaki Disease

My first scenario; expect some spots to be rough.
(I'm not the original creator of this idea. It originated from the Japanese shoujo manga named "Hanahaki Otome")

Everyone on planet Earth slowly begins to fall in love with someone else. But over time, they all realize that it's a one-sided type of love; it's not mutually returned by one party. Heartbreak occurs, but it's not your typical "crying and eating ice cream in the corner while watching Twilight" heartbreak. People all over the world begin to experience painful sensations in their chest, but soon enough they start to cough up and vomit flower petals; a few people are already vomiting complete flowers.
Nothing of this degree has ever existed before. What is going on??

People start to compare this new "heartbreak disease" to a fictional disease created long ago: The Hanahaki Disease. Everything is lining up perfectly, and the infected are in a state of panic upon realizing that this disease-- once a fictional scenario, has become reality, and the only two ways to be cured is for their love to be reciprocated, or to undergo a delicate surgery and removing their affection for the other altogether, but risking the chance of forgetting the lover or losing their ability to love someone else again. Everyone who is infected refuses to have the surgery, saying they would rather die than lose their feelings.
Will the infected have their love reciprocated too late? Or will they be left alone to perish on a bed of petals and flowers?
