Cold Front Accessibility Patch

If you are already familiar with setting up a custom directory via gameinfo.txt, you can skip this installation guide and do your thing.

This is an external patch to add custom subtitles, and modify existing subtitles, specific to Cold Front.
It currently only supports English subtitles and captions.

You only need this patch if you are hard of hearing, or otherwise rely on subtitles to play.


I know this is a bit tedious to set up, but workshop Add-Ons don't support custom subtitles, so this is the only way to make them work.

This patch is completely client-side, so it is not necessary for every player to have it installed. You can play with people who did not set it up for themselves.

Third-party servers may prevent you from joining since the gameinfo.txt file is modified. In this case, simply remove the line that says "Game cf_patch" and you'll be able to join those servers.

It is recommended to unsubscribe from this after finishing the installation.

This patch remains active outside of Cold Front, and will result in incorrect subtitles for Bill being displayed. Only use this if you really need it, and then remove it after you finished playing Cold Front.

Subscribe to this Add-On and launch the game. This will download the VPK file for you.
Alternatively, you can download the VPK through any other available methods.
The file will be downloaded to
Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\addons\workshop


Open the VPK with GCFScape.[valvedev.info]


Extract the folders cf_patch and left4dead2 into your Left 4 Dead 2 folder.
Replace gameinfo.txt if you are prompted to do so.
Alternatively, you can manually add "Game cf_patch" to it, if preferred.


Verify that the gameinfo.txt is set up correctly. Scroll to the bottom of it, and it should look as pictured.


The patch should now be functional and ready for use.
