XM-1 The prototype of Abrams

In 1971, after the closure of the XM802 project in the United States, the development of a new XM-1 tank began. The General Motors and Chrysler steel tank was developed. Ford proposed to use the Leopard 2 tank as the main US battle tank. In 1973, a qualifying round was announced where candidate cars were presented. Prototype trials began in 1976. The GM and Chrysler variants were worse than the "Leopard". It was decided to supply the Leopard-2 model "AV" (Americanized version). Some changes were made. But when the tank passed the same test program, it turned out that it is inferior to the American options in armor and speed. Because of this, the tank did not go into production and it was decided to further develop the American variants. Now the rivalry between General Motors and Chrysler began again. New versions of the XM-1 were developed. Due to non-motor aspects (for example, the GM variant had a diesel engine and the army preferred a gas turbine engines), won the Chrysler variant and was adopted by the US Army. The new tank was named M1 "Abrams".
