UIC-Standard-1 Cooling Wagon (Ibes)

The International Union of Railways (UIC) included two refrigerator car types in its proposals of standardized car designs. Standard 1 (St. 1) became the most widely built refrigerator car to this day. The state railroads of Greece, Morocco, Italy, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium procured examples of the St. 1. On the German Federal Railroad, they ran as private cars of the Interfrigo company. Meat companies, breweries and grocery chains used this refrigerated car. A total of about 6,500 units were built. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was hardly a freight train without these reliable cars. The ice chambers could be loaded with ice bars by hand via end platforms.
