Beskrivelse
A small mod that adds three new semi-megabeasts from Greek mythological narrative. Woe betide those who cross their path!

Creatures

The Calydonian Boar

"Its eyes glowed with bloodshot fire: its neck was stiff with bristles, and the hairs, on its hide, bristled stiffly like spear-shafts... Its tusks were the size of an Indian elephant’s... the leaves were scorched, by its breath."

-Ovid, Metamorphoses

The Calydonian Boar is a monstrously large boar with an appetite for mayhem and carnage. Armed with formidable tusks and armored by a thick hide, this beast of legend is no small threat! As if its monstrous size and legendary aggression weren't enough to deter even the foolhardiest of hunters, the beast's noxious breath is inescapable: those who face the boar in close combat will find their bodies wracked with pain before they are even wounded. Perhaps this is why the heroic huntress Atalanta was the first to pierce its hide with an arrow after her spear-armed compatriots were unsuccessful.

The Nemean Lion

And he slew the lion, when over his manly limbs the victor wore the tawny beast’s shaggy hide, terrific with its yawning jaws upon his head.

-Euripides, Herakles

A ferocious man-eater that fears little the lesser armaments of mortal: with a coat capable of turning aside even steel arms, the Nemean Lion is a curse upon those it hunts! One would be wise to learn from the mighty Herakles, who, finding his arrows useless against the beast's hide, fell upon it with club and bare hands, bludgeoning and strangling it. One may even find it wise to craft the beast's hide into armor just as Herakles did, but it bears the same fatal weakness to bludgeoning as lion's hide and dwarven armor alike.

The Khalkotauros

He Hephaistos had also made for him Aeetes king of Kolkhis Bulls with feet of bronze the Khalkotauroi and bronze mouths from which the breath came out in flame, blazing and terrible.

-Apollonius Rhodius, Argonautica

Though far smaller than most other beasts of similar renown, Khalkotauroi are no less dangerous. Bronze bulls capable of spitting flame, they are terrifying foes that feel neither pain nor fear - they know only bloodlust! Though Jason, leader of the Argonauts, subdued and tamed these foul foes, there is little to be learned from this feat, for the hero was protected from their flames by the magic of the witch Medea. Your dwarves must face these bronze bulls with shield in hand and courage in heart - nothing less will bring them victory.

Known Issues

I apologize for the issues with this mod. This was mostly meant as personal practice for spriting and megabeast modding, but I decided to share it for those who might be interested. As this is not a mod I intend to revisit in any great detail, there is the possibility that some of these issues will remain unresolved. That being said, none of them should be detrimental to gameplay.

  • The sprites do not look very good. They're also somewhat too large. Sorry!
  • The breath attack of the Calydonian Boar is inconsistently applied.
  • The Calydonian Boar lacks a proper corpse sprite.
  • The quality of Nemean Lion leather armor is not well tested - finding the items in the object testing arena is nigh impossible due to the lack of an equipment search function, while testing the combat in the world presents the least controlled environment possible. The values for blunt resistance are copied from leather, but the values for shear (edged weapon) resistance are custom.

True enough, giants are practically a non-threat to any well-established fort. I'll see what I can do :steamsunny:

I think them being incredibly powerful is the entire point, besides semi megas are quite wimpy, more than once I've seen untrained and unarmed dwarves beat giants, ettins, cyclopes into the ground. A monster which is actually a threat would be a nice change of pace

@HonorConner
A fun idea in concept, but in principle Hekatonkheires would be impossible to balance - a hundred arms gives them 98 more multi-attacks as well as 98 more limbs for dwarves to target in lieu of vital areas like the body and head. Making them as large as the other semi-megas would make them inordinately powerful in-game, while making them smaller would make them too weak for world-gen, where they'd be killed off far too quickly.

Hecatoncherires when?

Potentially - I don't know too much about early Mesopotamian mythology (the only idea for a creature that comes to mind is the lamassu) but I'll definitely look into it. :)
