World Trade Center (World Wonder)

The World Trade Center of New York was a seven-building complex located in Lower Manhattan, with the two tallest 110-story towers ("North Tower" and "South Tower", the "Twin Towers") being the world's tallest buildings and one of the recognizable landmarks that dominated New York's skyline. Lead architect Minoru Yamazaki incorporated a number of ingenious designs into the World Trade Center, from the sky lobbies that people could switch to express elevators (inspired by New York's subway system) to the plaza with features of Arabic architecture. Since its opening in 1973, the World Trade Center had hosted multinational corporations in its seven towers and an average of 1.7 million tourists annually. However, the World Trade Center also became a target for terrorists. On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers as well as the Pentagon. The Twin Towers collapsed within two hours of the crash, in the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of mankind.
