Nvidia Control Panel
1. Go to your nvidia control panel, and select "Manage 3D settings" on the left.
2. Click the "Program Settings" tab in the main window, and then click "Add" to add your Half-Life executable (hl.exe) and make sure it's selected under "Select a program to customize" in the main window.
3. Go all the way to the bottom and change the "Vulkan/OpenGL present method" setting to "Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain".
4. Make sure to click "Apply" before exiting out of the nvidia control panel.
AutoHDR_Force
1. Go to https://github.com/ledoge/autohdr_force and download the "release.zip" file from "releases."
2. Follow the directions from the main GitHub page to force AUTO HDR for "hl.exe"
3. Start the game TWICE to make sure it works.
4. Open xbox game bar to access the Auto HDR intensity slider.
5. IMO for best effect, turn auto hdr intensity slider all the way up, turn the in game gamma slider all the way down, and turn the in game brightness slider all the way up.
6. ENJOY!

(there is also a mod out there that injects path tracing that can add substantially more "pop" to the lighting, but it's beyond the scope of this guide)

I have tried this for L4D2 with no success. I even tried switching to vulkan and setting the swap chain to dxgi in nvidia control panel.
