Outdated info warning!
This is an old rushed version of of the guide made quickly after the Hl1 25th Anniversary update was dropped. I made an updated version of the guide that should work much better now!

So step one
Go to the half life folder
Commonly Located on C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life

You will see something like this

Enter the Valve folder. It will look like this

NOW
This is the hard part. Inside the sprites folder you will find a txt file. This is called Hud.txt

Inside it will look like this:

Basically the resolution is the number the game resorts for whether or not use a file. If you got a big screen it will scale to compensate. Unfourtunately, maybe your screen isn't that big, and now your HUD is big and ugly.

Just replace the number with your resolution so it will use the small sprites when big resolution.

That should do the trick! Enjoy!

You probably dont care about everything else. Just leave
Has this ever happened to you?!
  • Oh wow!
  • 25 years! cool.
  • Wait, update... to half life?
  • NOT JUST HALF LIFE.
  • HALF LIFE ONE?!?

  • I gotta check this out!

  • ...

  • AUGEAGHEHAGHHHGHEHGAHHAGHHHHHH
  • WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HUD?!

If so. You've come to the right place
Worry not Fellow Player, I have figured it out!

Personal Preference
So, if we are on the same page, your hud probably looks like this:
You know it isn't... that bad but im sure you don't like the freaking jumbo hud on your half life...

I mean maybe you do but... why are you here then?
ᶦ ˢʷᵉᵃʳ ᶦᵗ ˡᵒᵒᵏˢ ʷᵒʳˢᵉ ᶦᶠ ʸᵒᵘ ᵖˡᵃʸ ᶦᵗ
JUST TELL ME HOW TO DO IT ALREADY!
GAH!!
Alright fine
Jeez learn to have some patience

So, just go to the console and um...
uh hold on, just one second, i need to uh...

???

!?!?

ALRIGHT I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT
Just go to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\valve
(Or wherever you stored half life)

Then you should see something like this

NO WAIT

CRAP THESE ARE FOR TEXT?! UM... WELL...
I (DID NOT) FIGURE IT OUT
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life
Or wherever you store your half life

Then enter the valve folder, then the sprites folder
It should look something like this

Click on hud.txt
It should look like this

Now this sounds confusing so lets just
Yeah thats better

Now, just change it to your liking.
For example, i have a 1280 set resolution. But i want to use the 640 sprites. So i just...

????

Well that works!
Special thanks
I want to thank um, valve i think for half life
and [Data expunged] and um for the no wait STOP NO I NEED MORE TIME STO-
Still not satisfied?

you can change it's size if you simply change the screen resolution. i changed it from the default one to 1280x720 and the hud size now looked like it was from opposing force/blue shift

yess you have to resize it in 16 different files, you can download the 16 txt files from the internet to paste them in the sprites folder

@Stilte Oh, darn. It looks like they updated it or something.... might have to update the guide, and make it good for a change heh.
In the meantime, i believe there are new files for the crosshair and weapons separately, you can probably apply the same process i explained with those files instead!
if... that makes sense
