Moguri Mod 9.0 is Available Now in the Memoria Engine Mod Catalog!

What is Moguri Mod?[sites.google.com]
Moguri Mod is a faithful revamp of Final Fantasy 9 (on Steam), aided by AI (ESRGAN and Stable Diffusion). It makes backgrounds more detailed, highres, cleaner and less noisy, while respecting the original art.

It is aimed to first time players and veterans alike. It restores a lot of what made the charm of the original PSX game.

It is based on Memoria mod, which brings a mountain of features and polish.

Main Features[sites.google.com]
  • Moguri

    • HD backgrounds (aided by AI and polished by hand)

    • Manual redraw of all 11k layer edges and area names

    • HD textures (worldmap, NPC, monsters, battles, UI elements...)

    • Matching background FMVs

  • Memoria

    • Launcher with settings + mod manager + model viewer

    • A huge list of bugfixes, cheats, skips and QoL options

    • High framerate (30 / 60 / 120 fps)

    • 16:9/16:10 Widescreen (where possible)

    • Smooth camera

    • Rendering and sound improvements

    • Alternative modes for battles (turn based...)

    • ...and cards (Triple Triad...)

    • Original PSX font

    • PSX behaviors / features restored (UI, textures, randomness...)

    • Modding base for most other mods

    • More information on the project's github[github.com]

  • 30 FPS Cinematics

    • You have the option to download Moguri 30 fps FMVs from the Mod Manager.

    • This is a fluidification of the FMVs in the game, from 15 frames/seconds to 30, using AI (DAIN). This is not part of the main mod anymore, as it is pretty heavy and can seem a wonky in some places.

  • Alternative Orchestral Soundtrack

    • Moguri Mod used to come with 13 (optional) orchestrated tracks made by Pontus Hultgren, the soundtrack is now a separate mod that you can download from the Mod Manager. You can listen to more of his work on his YouTube channel.

Moguri Mod Credits[sites.google.com]

You can watch Snouz work on Moguri Mod 9.0 on https://www.twitch.tv/snouz2

NOTE: For any concerned about the bug where the game would crash when viewing the final cutscenes of the game, that issue has been resolved.
Memoria Engine
This project, dubbed "Final Fantasy IX Engine", is a complete rewrite of the game's engine in C#. It maintains binary compatibility with the native parts of the game and the serialized data within the game archives, allowing the compiled version to be used in place of the original DLLs.

The primary goal of this project is to provide mod makers with a convenient framework for developing gameplay mods, replacing game assets, expand original content, localizing the game into native languages, and fixing bugs of the original.

Memoria addresses numerous bugs in the existing game port across various aspects like rendering, audio, and abilities. It includes built-in mods (turn-based battles, gameplay mechanics changes, a new card game system, cheat disablers, etc.) and provides a framework for integrating third-party mods, supporting import/export and modification of game resources.

The engine integrates seamlessly with Unity, allowing the use of features ranging from loading external AssetBundles to manual manipulation of GameObjects and Components. However, many game elements like the event interpreter or animation pipelines emulate the PSX assembler, meaning significant modifications such as importing custom models, shaders, sounds, etc., require creating workarounds to either transform external data into the game's native format or completely alter the approach by transforming game resources into compatible formats and implementing custom rendering mechanisms.

The engine introduces a new audio API, extending the native engine with the dynamic library soloud.dll, enhancing audio capabilities.

Changelog[github.com]
Most Complained about FINAL FANTASY IX Issues
On top of the mods’ improved textures, it also includes dozens of QoL fixes, including solutions for some of the game's most complained about issues.
  • Combat Speed
    • At the beginning of every fight you have to wait for an animation to start the battle
    • Then an animation to show the combat arena
    • Then you have to wait for the ATB gauge to fill to take your turn
    • Combat animations can also be slow
  • Stealing Items
    • Nearly every boss in the game has great items to steal
    • Steal rate can be low (sometimes very, very low 1/256 or ~0.39%)
    • This can turn boss fights into just sitting around surviving while you hope for a steal.
  • Bad Trance System (Limit Breaks)
    • Trance lets you temporarily enter an enhanced combat state and use new powerful combat skills for the next few turns
    • Trance happens automatically when the gauge fills
    • Usually happens in random battles, where it will be mostly or completely wasted.
  • Tetra Master is Not Fun
    • Card Stats are confusing
    • Number values are misleading. 0-9, then A-F values having a hexadecimal number value between 0-255 (ex. 0=0-15, 1=16-31, and F=240-255)
    • Instead of the larger number winning, the game starts an RNG battle using the hex value of the stat.
    • Combos can be frustrating
    • Lost cards on loss
    • Card inventory is limited
These issues can be fixed by tweaking the settings included with Moguri Mod and Memoria
Installation and Setup
If you wish to try the Echo-S 9 Voice Acting DEMO, install with Echo-S 9 Installer and Memoria.Patcher.exe afterward, otherwise just use the Memoria.Patcher.exe.
  • Echo-S 9 Voice Acting DEMO
    • Adds voice acting to the game.

    • This is only a demo, however, and only covers about 4 hours of the game.

    • Not recommended for first-time players.

    • When you finish the Demo, you must deactivate this mod to continue the game.

  • (Optional) Install with Echo-S 9 Installer by Tsunamods
    1. Install FFIX and Run game at least once to make sure it is installed properly

    2. Download Echo-S 9 Installer from here.[www.tsunamods.com] Choose to 'Download Installer'.

    3. Run EchoS9-Installer.exe
      • If Microsoft Defender stops the installation, click ‘More Info’ then ‘Run anyway’.
The installer should automatically choose the default FFIX location in the steam library, but if yours is different, use ‘Browse’ to find yours.

    4. Click 'Install'
      • The installer will download and install Memoria Engine, and Echo-S 9 Demo.
IMPORTANT: Do not click the box that says ‘OPTIONAL - Moguri Mod’. Version 8.3.0 is outdated, and 9.0 can be installed from the Launcher afterward.

    5. Continue to the next section and install the Memoria Engine Patch.

  • Install with Memoria Engine Patch
    1. Install FFIX and Run game at least once to make sure it is installed properly

    2. Download the latest Memoria.Patcher.exe from the Moguri Mod website by following this link[sites.google.com] and clicking 'Download Memoria'.

    3. Run the .exe program, and it should automatically detect your installation location. If it doesn't, move the .exe to the FF9 game folder and run it there.

    4. Once it's complete, launch the game through steam.

    5. Jump to the 'Memoria Launcher' Section.

  • Memoria Launcher
    1. You will see this launcher.

    2. These are just a handful of the settings you can modify with Moguri Mod, that I will detail in the next section.

    3. Un-check and re-check 'Check for Updates' to manually check for updates, and install any that are available.

    4. Click ‘Play’ to run the game at least once to ensure the game will start.
      • If it does not start on the first try, it was probably saving settings to the Memoria.ini file, so try again.
      • Sometimes, if the game does not start, you can open Steam and see the game running but not opening. Just exit the game running in steam and try again.

    5. Exit the game and re-open the Launcher.

      • Note: When done changing settings, click Play or Exit to save settings. This Launcher modifies the Memoria.ini file I will detail later.

    6. Click the “Mod Manager” button and this window will appear

      • If you used the Echo-S 9 Installer, Echo-S 9 will be here already.

    7. Installing Moguri Mod:

      1. Click the 'Browse Catalog' tab at the top. You will see this window:

      2. Download the following mods:

        • 'Moguri Mod'[sites.google.com]
            • HD backgrounds (faithfully aided by AI, merged and polished by hand)
            • All 11k layer edges manually redrawn
            • Overhaul of all model textures
            • Improved FMVs that merge with backgrounds
            • HD places names, using original fonts
            • Rework of some UI elements (maps, minimap, menu...)
            • HD chocographs (based on Caledor's work with permission)
            • Visual bugfixes (some by SamsamTS)

WARNING: If you have 'Moguri - 3D textures', deactivate it or delete it. It's no longer necessary and will conflict with Moguri Mod.

        • 'Moguri 30fps videos' | This contains the FMVs fluidified by AI.
          • 30fps FMVs (instead of 15) (not yet upgraded)

        • Optional - Moguri Alt Soundtrack | this is now a separate mod that can be downloaded
          • YouTube Playlist of Orchestral Music
          • Orchestral version of 13 songs, interpreted by Pontus Hultgren
          • I would not use this on your first playthrough of the game because the game has great music by default
          • The Orchestral versions are pretty good, but I prefer the original OST.

        • Optional - Moguri Mod (2020) v8.4
          • This is the old 2020 version of the Moguri backgrounds, but with all the rest (textures, UI, fixes, edge cutting, lights...) from Moguri 9. This version's backgrounds are more pixel-perfect, paint-like, but noisier.

The other mods will be detailed later

      3. Activate the Mods in the 'Installed Mods' tab. These should be at the bottom of the load order.

    8. Open the Memoria.ini file from the game root folder using any text editor, such as Notepad++
      • I will go into more detail on this file later.

    9. Find the section labeled [Graphics] and change the following settings
I’m going to Bold the settings that fix the big issues I mentioned earlier.

Note from faospark: The rule of thumb in configuring the settings FPS of the game is to understand that the Setting FPS should always be higher than Setting TPS, except for the menus.
FPS Settings can be changed on the Launcher menu.

      BattleFPS = 90 BattleTPS = 18 FieldFPS = 90 FieldTPS = 30 WorldFPS = 90 WorldTPS = 30 MenuFPS = 60 MenuTPS = 60 BattleSwirlFrames = 13

      • BattleFPS - (default 30) Controls the fluidity of battle graphics (frame per second)

      • BattleTPS - (default 15) Controls the speed of battles (tick per second)
        • For faster battles, set this between 16-20. I'm working with 18 currently.

      • FieldFPS - (default 30) Controls the fluidity of field graphics

      • FieldTPS - (default 30) Controls the speed in fields

      • WorldFPS - (default 20) Controls the fluidity of world map graphics

      • WorldTPS - (default 20) Controls the speed in world maps

      • MenuFPS - (default 60) Controls the fluidity of other modules

      • MenuTPS - (default 60) Controls the speed in other modules

      • BattleSwirlFrames - (default 115) the number of frames before a battle
        • There is a new setting in the launcher to turn off the battle swirl animation, but I prefer it to be on and fast instead. 13 is about as fast as when the animation is turned off, but it doesn't just go black and start the battle. If you wish to skip the battle intro camera, you can disable that in the game config menu.

    10. Save any changes to the Memoria.ini file

    11. Installation complete. Enjoy FFIX with Moguri Mod and 60/90/120 fps

If you need to start over from a clean slate, be sure to uncheck the "Fix Steam Overlay" option from the Launcher first.

These Links will include detailed descriptions of all the settings in the memoria.ini file.

Memoria.ini setting details[github.com]

Battle modification settings[github.com]

NOTE: These are just suggestions. The Bolded suggestions are highly recommended, but are not necessary. The other suggestions are just for fun.

I’m going to Bold the settings that fix the big issues I mentioned earlier.

BE SURE TO SAVE ANY CHANGES YOU MAKE TO THE .INI FILE

I’m going to briefly go over some of the settings I think you should change. I’ll include some descriptions from the official site and some notes of my own.

[Battle]
Speed = 2
  • I would recommend the Turn-based setting

  • Speed (default 0) 0 = Default / 1 = Fast / 2 = Turn-based / 3 = Simultaneous, targets can't attack, turn-order respected / 4 = Simultaneous, targets can't attack / 5 = Simultaneous

  • ATB Speeds 0-3 are available in-game in the config menu.

  • This setting changes how the Active Time Battle (ATB) and the battle flow behaves in the game. Please note that this setting is not directly related to the speed of how quickly an ATB gauge charges from nothing to full.

    • 0 (Default) - The default system from the game. When the ATB gauge has finished charging up, the character gets a turn, and when the character has performed an action, the ATB gauge slowly charges up again.

    • 1 (Fast) - if none of your characters have a turn ready, the battle time instantly fast-forwards until one of your characters gets a turn. The effects during the ATB charging happen right after fast-forwarding, as if you had waited for the ATB gauge to charge.

      • Example: Zidane is the only character alive. He performs a move, and then he gets hit by a Doom countdown. With the setting Speed = 0, Zidane's ATB gauge takes, say, 5 seconds to charge up, and he has 5 seconds left in his Doom counter when he gets a turn. With the setting Speed = 1, Zidane's ATB gauge fills up instantly (since no-one else has a turn ready), and the Doom countdown lowers from 10 to 5, to simulate the effect of waiting for the ATB gauge to fill up.

    • 2 (Turn-based) - Same as Fast ATB (setting Speed = 1), except ATB is stopped when a character has a turn. Time remains stopped while characters have a turn ready, when you have given them orders, and nobody has a turn ready. Time is instantly fast-forwarded until someone else has a turn ready, and similar to Speed = 1, each effect that should have happened during the fast-forwarding occur when the fast-forwarding is done. This effectively works similar to the Conditional Turn-Based (CTB) system from Final Fantasy X.

      • N.b. You can press the L2 button or its keyboard equivalent (“F” by default) to have a character remain on standby, and time is fast-forwarded until the next character gets a turn. This only works with the Speed = 2 setting.

NOTE: There were previously some issues with Turn-based mode that have been resolved. During the game's superboss fight, turn-based mode will be turned off.

    • 3 (Dynamic - Simultaneous type 1) - The ATB gauges charge up as the default behavior (setting Speed = 0) but characters and enemies can attack simultaneously. A character or an enemy performs a command as soon as it is given, except when:
      • it is currently using another command and that command has not reached its idling point,
      • it is currently targeted by another command,
      • the command has been queued after another command that is currently blocked.
      • This setting automatically sets SFXRework = 1.

    • 4 (Simultaneous type 2) - The ATB gauges charge up as the default behavior (setting Speed = 0) but characters and enemies can attack simultaneously. A character or an enemy performs a command as soon as it is given, except when:
      • it is currently using another command and that command has not reached its idling point,
      • it is currently targeted by another command.
      • This setting automatically sets SFXRework = 1.

5 (Simultaneous type 3) - The ATB gauges charge up as the default behavior (setting Speed = 0) but characters and enemies can attack simultaneously. A character or an enemy performs a command as soon as it is given, except when:
      • it is currently using another command and that command has not reached its idling point.
      • This setting automatically sets SFXRework = 1.
      • This effectively works similar to the battle system from Final Fantasy X-2.

NoAutoTrance = 1
  • This is a big change for Trance (Highly Recommended)
    • When enabled, the player is able to choose when the characters enter trance. When a character's Trance bar is full, their “Change” command (the command to change from the front row to the back row, and vice versa) is replaced by a “Trance” command. Whenever the character has a turn, the player can use the “Trance” command for making the character go into Trance immediately. Entering Trance drains their ATB gauge, i.e., they won't be able to execute commands until their ATB has filled up again. If the player does not make the character enter Trance, they will remain with a filled Trance bar until the trance command is selected, so it is possible to save Trance for future battles.

ViviAutoAttack = 1
  • This is a fun option. It lets your Black Mage friend use low level black magic spells with no MP cost instead of bonking enemies with his stick.
    • When enabled and when the auto-attack booster is turned on, Vivi will likely use one of his basic spells instead of a physical attack. The effectiveness of the spells against the selected enemy will be evaluated. If one of the base spells is effective, it will be applied instead of attack. Applying this spell doesn't waste MP. Against enemies reflecting spells, magic will only be applied if Vivi can ignore reflection. Magic is never used against allies.

AutoPotionOverhealLimit = 0
  • Modifies the behavior of the ability Auto-Potion [Default = -1].
    • Lower numbers are less wasteful and higher numbers are more wasteful. I would set this between 0% and 50%
    • Between 0 and 100, a Potion or Hi-Potion will not be used by the Auto-Potion supporting ability if it would overheal by that factor. For example, using AutoPotionOverhealLimit = 0 will prevent you from using any Auto-Potion that would heal more than the missing HP. Using AutoPotionOverhealLimit = 50, a potion restoring 150 HP may only be used if at least 75 HP are missing. Using AutoPotionOverhealLimit = 100, Auto-Potion will always trigger but will use the best potion in priority instead of the worst potion (which is the default behavior, AutoPotionOverhealLimit = -1).
    • I think the default behavior (-1) just uses your weakest available potion any time you take damage.
Memoria.ini Settings Pt.2
[Tetra Master]
TripleTriad = 2
  • This setting is on the Launcher now.
    • Change the card game rules.
      • 0 - Tetra Master rules
      • 1 - Tetra Triad rules: cards have arrows and directional powers (with diagonal powers being the average of adjacent powers) and card battles are not random
      • 2 - Triple Triad rules: the board is 3×3 without blocks, there is no combo and cards have powers for their up/down/left/right directions
MaxCardCount = 10000
  • (default 100) The maximum number of cards the player can have Simultaneously.
  • You can set this to 10,000 and not worry about hitting the card cap.
DiscardAutoButton = 0
  • I would set this to 0 and disable it. With the increased card count, this is more of an accident waiting to happen

[Cheats]

[Hacks]
AllCharactersAvailable = 1

  • 1 = All characters are available
  • 2 = All characters are available and characters are not removed or swapped because of the scenario. Be careful: the option 2 soft-locks the game in some situations.

StealingAlwaysWorks = 2
  • 0 = Default

Mini-game cheats

  • (default 1)The score increase for each jump rope in the related mini-game
FrogCatchingIncrement = 1
  • (default 1) The score increase for each frog caught in the related mini-game
HippaulRacingViviSpeed = 33
  • (default 33) The base running speed in the race mini-game
Additional Mods
None of these mods are necessary, but they all bring something new to the table.

You can now download other mods by clicking the “Mod Manager” button on the launcher and browsing the mod manager catalog, or from Nexus Mods. For first-time players, some mod titles contain character names, so potential spoilers.

When installing mods with the mod manager, you generally want Moguri Mod to be at the bottom of the load order. You can change the order using the arrows on the left.

Latest Update added some functionality and removed other buttons.
  • Added ⏫ icon when mod update is available

  • Launcher will now notify you when there are mod updates available, and/or you have incompatible mods installed.

  • Incompatible mods will show like this in the Mod Manager:

  • Additionally, the Mod description will also detail what mods the mod is incompatible with.

  • Activate column header is acting as "activate all" toggle

  • Removed confusing and mostly useless compatibility check button, replaced with simple "incompatible with" tag to display along description for now.

  • Added 'Back' button to close the Mod Manager. This is because on Steam Deck, the Mod Manager is viewed in Fullscreen and needs to be closed through the 'STEAM' Menu.

Some mods require you to choose a mod option. There will be a drop-down menu and a checkbox to activate the option.

Kupo Mods 4.0 FAQ
A New Name and Fresh Start for Version 4.0
Welcome to the section of Kupo Mods, formerly known as Mog Add-ons. This is your go-to collection for gameplay and graphical tweaks for Final Fantasy IX.

What's Changed?
In this latest update, the mod collection has been reorganized from a single large library into seven distinct packages. The mod had become too large and difficult to maintain, prompting the decision to split it. This change was also recommended by the creators of the mod manager. By separating the mods, it’s now easier for users and modders to find exactly what they need, preventing the creation of duplicate features and ensuring that no one is surprised by existing capabilities.

Why the Name Change?
You might be wondering about the sudden name change. Actually, this change has been a year in the making. The idea first came to me after watching a video where they repeatedly referred to Mog Add-ons as "Kupo Mods." The name stuck with me, and I felt it was time for a fresh start under a new banner.

Are version 4.0.1 packages the same as the old Mog Add-ons Mods?
Yes they are the same but split in to groups that makes it a lot easier for users to use. They are grouped in such a way that the mods inside a package has a similarity of function .

How Do I Migrate from Version 3.7.3 to the Smaller Mods of Version 4.0?
To migrate, deactivate Mog Add-ons 3.7, then download and activate any of the seven new mods that are relevant to you. Once you've set them up to your liking, you can safely delete version 3.7.x of Mog Add-ons.

Alternate Fantasy and Beatrix Mod

Different versions of the same mod - Choose One:
  1. Alternate Fantasy[forums.qhimm.com]

This mod is essentially Hard Mode with extra features. Not recommended for first playthroughs.
    • Changes to the battle system, enemies, and abilities
    • Extra unlockable character (Beatrix) in the late game (with changes to cutscenes, abilities, trance etc.)
    • Re-added Hidden scenes cut by the devs
    • 4 Extra bosses and rewards

  2. Beatrix Mod[forums.qhimm.com]

Provides additional content from Alternate Fantasy without changing the difficulty, or the gameplay, of the vanilla (non-modded) game. It includes:
    • Recruitable Beatrix (with cutscenes, abilities, trance etc.),
    • Hidden scenes cut by the devs,
    • 4 extra bosses and their rewards; the extra bosses are slightly easier since they inflict fewer statuses, but their damage and HP are the same as in the main version of the mod
    • Thunder Slash fix (that's the only non-optional gameplay aspect in this version).
    • Not compatible with Alternate Fantasy.
Tantalus Mod
by Emeiru

Overhauls Blank, Cinna, and Marcus to become actually usable characters

Includes:
- The tantalus trio with their own set of active and supporting abilities
- Base stats improvements
- Steal-Gil and Mug buffed
- New items and tweaks to complement the trio and thief gameplay
- Minor name and ability text changes (purely thematic)
Trance Seek
by DV

A hard mod that allows you to experience a new whole adventure! All the monsters and bosses have been redesigned (not only a stats boost but all the AIs are revisited), new skills, mechanics and many other things!

Currently, Trance Seek is...
  • An increased and thoughtful difficulty, designed for players who seek challenge.
  • A complete overhaul of all enemies, in terms of stats, AI and skills.
  • Around 30 new bosses added (including 2 superbosses): all the game's bosses have been reworked to offer different mechanics and more!
  • The game has a total of 84 Support Abilities + 84 additional enhanced versions (WIP).
  • All characters have 44 Support Abilities available (not counting boosted versions, so a total of 88 Support Abilities each!).
  • Each character has its own unique passive or mechanic. +40 new skills added.
  • 59 new items (WIP) !
  • And lots more ^_^
This is not an EXTREME hardcore difficult mod, it only adds a higher difficulty than the original version while keeping a constant progression.

It's currently a demo (CD1 + CD2 + CD3 available), but almost +30 hours of lifetime!
Don't hesitate to try!

NOTE: Trance Seek is only compatible with Memoria v2024.05.19 and above.
Triple Triad
by DV

Adds a triple triad background for the card game, the FF8 triple triad music theme, and changes some cards into character or boss cards.
Better Card Drop
Idea by Snouz and made by DV

Get the matching card from mobs/bosses!
You can use different options to modify the drop rate.

Drop Rates:
  • 2x | 25%
  • 3x | 37.5%
  • 4x | 50%
  • 100%
  • Random Card | Drop a random card after each battle
Black Cat - Endgame Shop
by Emeiru

The Black Mage Village (Disc 4) now sells almost every item in the game!
- No. 239's Weapon and Armor Shop now sells every purchasable weapon and armor.
- The Black Cat Synthesis Shop now can synthesize all regular equipment.
Amazing Quina
by Emeiru

The mod aims to buff Quina (without overdoing it!).

  • The main highlight of it is Quina having finally a reliable (but still random) basic attack with forks, making Quina a formidable physical party member early in the game.

  • Alternate Fantasy has already given tons of utility to Quina, but vanilla versions also get to enjoy the amazing new Dbl Blu trance now. Mighty Guard, White Wind, and stuff in one turn? Yes, please!

  • Active abilities buffed for both versions though only a few for now: better Goblin Punch damage, White Wind heal

  • New support abilities include Return Magic that will truly make use of Quina's underused Mag stat!

  • I also love the addition of Scan, something you'd expect from a Blue Mage, no?

ABILITY CHANGES

Trance
- Blu Mag has been replaced by Dbl Blu (from Alternate Fantasy), so while tranced you can use both Cook and Dbl Blu!

Active Abilities
- Quina now learns Scan and Float
- Goblin Punch power now scales with level (base 20 up to 83 at level 100)
- White Wind heal increased to 60% of Quina's HP (same with Alternate Fantasy)
- Aqua Breath accuracy rate increased to 100%

Supporting Abilities
- Quina now learns Return Magic and Mag Elem Null

ITEM CHANGES

- Fork weapons now deal less random damage (Damage will range between 50%-100%~ of Quina's Weapon Power)
- Fork now teaches Antibody
- Needle Fork now teaches Jelly
- Silver Fork now teaches Millionaire
- Bistro Fork now teaches Loudmouth
- New endgame robe synthesized at Hades: Quan's Robe. When equipped, all LV abilities will hit regardless of level. Specifially, the following abilities are affected by Quan's Robe LV Null:
Vanilla
LV5 Death
LV4 Holy
LV3 Def-less
Alternate Fantasy
LV5 Flare
LV4 Def-less
LV3 Aerial Slash

NON-GAMEPLAY CHANGES

- Recolored texture for Gastro Fork
Playable Character Pack
by Tirlititi

Add Kuja, Fratley and Lani as playable characters.
Nexus Mods
  • Improved Steal Abilities[www.nexusmods.com]
    by sargeryong

NOTE: This mod isn't necessary with the Tantalus Mod, as it also increases Mug damage.

I like this mod, because normally the Mug ability deals a pitiful amount of damage. This mod allows you to steal and do pretty good damage simultaneously, which is great for random battles.
    • Increases the damage from Mug to equal base attack damage before ability buffs
    • Increases Gil Stolen by Steal Gil by up to 4x
    • Not compatible with the EXP/AP Cheats from Mog Add-ons.

    To Install:
    1. Download and extract the file from the .zip

    2. Simply drop the "ImprovedStealAbilities" directory into your main FFIX directory (<your-steam-library>/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY IX/)

    3. Then, edit Memoria.ini in the same directory and add "ImprovedStealAbilities" to the 'FolderNames' list at the top of the file. For example, my mod list looks like this:

The mod manager will also add entries to this list when you install mods through it, with 'Priorities' being the load order.
Mod Load Order

- Kupo Mods' Priority as follows:
  1. Support Ability Cost

  2. No Exp Plus

  3. Exp, AP, Gil, Rewards Tweaks

  4. Kupo Controller Pack

  5. Portraits Pack

  6. Kupo UI Suite

  7. Kupo Heroes Pack
- Triple Traid above Kupo UI Suite

- Trance Seek, Amazing Quina, Tantalus, Alternate Fantasy and Beatrix Mod below Kupo Heroes Pack

- Alternate Fantasy below Tantalus

- Beatrix Mod below Tantalus

- Playable Character Pack below other Gameplay mods

- Moguri Mod should be at the bottom of the load order

Mod Incompatibilities:
- Trance Seek is not compatible with Alternate Fantasy, Amazing Quina, Beatrix Mod, Black Cat, David Bowie Edition, Freya Game+, Garnet is Main Character, Play as Kuja, Playable Character Pack, nor Tantalus.

- Alternate Fantasy is not compatible with Trance Seek nor Beatrix Mod

- Tantalus is not compatible with Trance Seek

- Beatrix mod is not compatible with Alternate Fantasy nor Trance Seek
NOTE: Beatrix Mod shows as incompatible with Tantalus, but it works with Tantalus Vanilla
Steam Deck Installation

NOTE: The Download Echo-S 9 Installer is pretty outdated, so unfortunately, I'm no longer using it. Hopefully Echo-S 9 will be available on the Mod Manager soon.

With Command Line Install by dotAXiS

A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse make this easier, and you may wish to change your Screen settings to not sleep for this process.
  1. Install FFIX through Steam

  2. NOTE 1: As of right now (8/9/2024), Proton Experimental seems to be working with Memoria Launcher. I've also been told by others that they have to use Proton 9. I guess just use whichever version works for you.

NOTE 2: (Thank you Blue_Meanie and Lazorne) You will need to use the stable version of SteamOS in the system settings, under 'Beta Participation', for the installation process.

Click the Gear-shaped 'Manage' button in the top right of FFIX's library page, then Properties...> Compatibility. Change the version of Proton used to 'Experimental' and make sure "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is checked. When you back out of this window, the Steam Deck will probably install Proton Experimental, unless it's already installed.

  3. Run the game at least once to make sure it is installed properly.

  4. If you haven't already, switch to Desktop Mode.

  5. You are going to want to do two things now:
    1. Open this guide on your web browser on Steam Desktop mode, or open the Moguri Install Webpage.[sites.google.com]
    2. Open the Steam Deck 'Konsole', which is like the Windows Command Terminal.

  6. Copy this command from below or from the Moguri webpage:

  7. Paste the command into the 'Konsole'.

  8. Press Enter to run the command. You will get this message:

    - The installer is checking that you are using the Stable version of SteamOS. Press Enter to continue.

    - The command will then check if FF9 is installed, install Protontricks, download the Memoria.Patcher.exe, and finally, install it.

    - You can now close the Konsole.

  9. Run FF9 through Steam and you should now see this Launcher:

    - On the updated launcher, un-check and re-check 'Check for Update' just to be safe. If there's a new update, install it.

  10. Click ‘Play’ to run the game at least once to ensure the game will start. If it does not start on the first try, it was probably saving settings to the Memoria.ini file, so try again.
    • On desktop mode, run the game in windowed mode on a lower resolution so it’s easier to quit the game.
    • If you are stuck on the start screen and have a keyboard, you can ctrl+alt+delete to get back to the desktop.

  11. Additional Setup:

NOTE: The latest update for Memoria removed the "Fix Steam overlay" button when using Mac or SteamDeck

    1. Go back to the 'Memoria Launcher' sub-section of the 'Installation and Setup' Section to finish necessary settings. This will also detail how to install Moguri Mod.

    2. Change your Game Launcher Settings and set the resolution to '1280x800 | 16:10'. Also note that Steam Deck FPS caps at 90 FPS, so you can use the 60 or 90 FPS settings.

    3. Edit your Memoria.ini file

    4. Install your mods:
      - It may be necessary to manually edit the Memoria.ini file to activate mods and mod options. I can ususally download mods just fine.

      - Here is an example of my Memoria.ini mod loadout.

      FolderNames = "KupoGemSATweak", "KupoTweaks/Features/Tweaks/AP99", "KupoTweaks/Features/Tweaks/8xgil", "KupoTweaks/Features/Tweaks/4xitem", "KupoTweaks", "KupoButtonsPack", "KupoPortraits/Features/Portraits/PortraitOperaOmnia", "KupoPortraits", "KupoUISuite/Features/Menubg/menubgtantalus", "KupoUISuite/Features/TitleLogo/TitleLogo3", "KupoUISuite/Features/DialogueBox/PRDarkerUI", "KupoUISuite/Features/TitleLogo/TitleLoop", "KupoUISuite/Features/Cards", "KupoUISuite", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/All", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Eiko", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Freya", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Quina", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Steiner", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Vivi", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Garnet", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Amaranth", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Zidane", "KupoHeroPack/Features/Enhance/Beatrix", "KupoHeroPack", "AmazingQuina/Vanilla", "AmazingQuina", "BlackCat", "BetterCardDrop/RandomCard", "BetterCardDrop", "PlayableTantalus/Vanilla", "PlayableTantalus", "BeatrixMod", "PlayableCharacterPack", "PlaystationSounds", "MoguriMain", "MoguriVideo" Priorities = "KupoGemSATweak", "KupoTweaks", "KupoButtonsPack", "KupoPortraits", "KupoUISuite", "KupoHeroPack", "TranceSeek", "AmazingQuina", "BlackCat", "BetterCardDrop", "PlayableTantalus", "BeatrixMod", "PlayableCharacterPack", "PlaystationSounds", "MoguriVideo", "MoguriMain"

  12. If you want to import game saves from your PC:
    1. Go to C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY IX\Steam

    2. Copy the EncryptedSavedData folder to your USB Drive.

    3. Eject the USB Drive from your PC and Plug it into your Steam Deck.

    4. In desktop mode of the Steam Deck, Click the USB icon on the taskbar, then choose to mount and open the USB Drive.

    5. Go to: /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/377840/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY IX/Steam/

    6. Copy your PC EncryptedSavedData folder to this folder and replace the existing saves.

WARNING: If you intend to uninstall the game for any reason on the Steam Deck, be sure to back up your saves first, because uninstalling the game deletes your saves.

  13. You should now have a fully modded FF9 on Steam Deck ready to go.

NOTE: I think this works for finding the Ragtime Mouse, but it doesn't work reliably for finding friendly monsters. However, doing the trick I mention in 'Pro Tips, Guide Link, and More: Non-Hostile Encounter Rate Exploit' works for Friendly Monsters seems to work.

    • Check out 'Pro Tips, Guide Link, and More: Non-Hostile Encounter Rate Exploit' below for more info.

Installation
  1. In game, press the Steam button to open the menu. In the FFIX tab at the top there will be a controller settings option. You can also find the controller shaped button on the library window for FFIX on the top right to open the Controller settings menu.

  2. You will see the controller layout. Click the Controller settings button at the bottom.

  3. Under 'Current Button Layout' select this layout button shown below

  4. Tab over to 'Search' and type "Admiral", and this layout should show up.

  5. Click it, then press X to Apply Layout.

You can now go back to 'Current Button Layout' and choose View Layout to see your layout has changed.

  6. Back out to save and exit.

Creating a Custom Command Input
  1. From the 'Current Button Layout' screen you can edit the back grip buttons and right trackpad, or click 'Edit Layout'.

  2. Under Edit Layout, find the Buttons tab

  3. In this example, we will edit L4 to input the keyboard shortut 'Alt+F1', so scroll down to the back grips section.

  4. Press X to remove the current command.

  5. Click Add command, then tab over to keyboard. Choose 'Alt'. This will make the L4 button input the Alt key.

  6. Now Click the Gear icon on the right of L4. Choose 'Add extra command'. This time, choose F1. Now, the L4 button inputs both Alt and F1, or Alt+F1.

  7. Back out to save and exit.

Creating the Friendly Encounter Finder

NOTE: I think this works for finding the Ragtime Mouse, but it doesn't work reliably for finding friendly monsters. However, doing the trick I mention in 'Pro Tips, Guide Link, and More: Non-Hostile Encounter Rate Exploit' works for Friendly Monsters seems to work.

  1. Follow the instructions to set up a custom hotkey. This time, we will set L4 as 'DPad Up' on the Gamepad.

  2. Click the gear on the right and select Settings.

  3. Set up the Regular Press Settings like this:

  4. Back out to save and exit.

NOTE: You can also set this up on PC by setting up Steam Inputs.

  • Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M – Open Volume Control Menu

  • Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S – Opens the Audio Debug Menu.
    • I wouldn’t mess with this
    • I can’t figure out how to close this
Pro Tips, Guide Links, and More
Auto-Save and Continue
The game has an auto save feature and a Continue option on the starting menu. The Continue option will always load the latest auto save. If you manually save the game, don’t use the continue option, use the Load Game option instead. I think the only time to use the continue option is if you get a game over or if you for some reason wanted to reload the game without saving. Auto saves happen when you enter a new screen.

Double Music Bug
Note: This should be fixed in the current version of Memoria.

There is a bug I have seen reoccur on 100% of playthroughs with the steam version of the game at the exact same point. When you get to a point in the game, you will notice that the music is playing twice and will persist even after the music is supposed to end. The music will keep playing even if you return to the starting screen. This is because the game is playing the music as well as the actual music and audio in the game. The only ways to fix this is to go to the nearest save point, which is right next to where the bug starts, save and quit the game to desktop and then restart the game.; OR you can load a different save. I have also seen the bug end when you get to the next major area, but this takes like 10–15 minutes and there is a boss fight and a cutscene you will have to get through.

Mini-game speed boost cheat
Any time the game has an on-screen timer, usually during mini-games, you can use the steam version's built in speed multiplier (3x speed I believe) to move faster while the countdown timer will go the same speed. This effectively triples the time you have to do the mini-game.

Master all Abilities
The game has a built-in cheat to Master all Abilities. This cheat lets you automatically master any skill that a character can learn as long as you have the equipment in your inventory.
This cheat only lasts until you quit the game and must be reactivated when you reload.
  • I wouldn’t use this in the early game
  • Mid-game when you have a lot of characters and a lot of equipment, it might be worth it to save time
  • Good for end-game when you are about to finish the game or are wrapping stuff up
  • One major downside (or upside) is that it causes one character to learn all of their Blue Magic spells.

Note: You can use the Mog-addons AP Tweaks instead.

Non-Hostile Encounter Rate Exploit
There are non-hostile encounters[gamefaqs.gamespot.com] you can find randomly on the world map, typically in forests. I’ve found you can increase your chance of triggering these encounters by lightly tapping the d-pad or flicking the stick to take one step at a time. I guess you are more likely to encounter monsters while running around.

As of May 13, 2024, I can confirm that this still works with the increased FPS.

From an old GameFaqs I found on this topic:
  • Friendly Monster Finder Button
In the 'Steam Deck Custom Controls' section, there are instructions to set up a custom hotkey. I also have a custom controller layout you can install. You can make a Turbo button to repeatedly take a small step forward while holding the button. This makes it easier to avoid enemies and only find friendly enemies and the Ragtime Mouse.

My Least Favorite Walkthrough

Brady Games released the official guide for FF9 in the year 2000, however the guide was only about 60% in the written book. The other 40% were in keywords in blue boxes in the margins of every page of the book. You had to take these keywords to a crap website on dial-up internet to get the info the book denied to you.

Someone acquired and released the original PlayOnline website. The companion website to the worst players guide of all time. PlayOnline[www.ff9guide.com]

I had this book as a kid, but I could never actually use the PlayOnline site. I think besides needing to connect to the internet, there was another barrier to entry that stopped me from using it. This was the same time period that I would go to the library to print out guides and GameShark codes.

Memoria Project[www.ffix-memoria.com]
A non-playable passion project led by a team of professional developers and artists in the video game industry that aims to reimagine what the legendary game would look like if it was remade with modern graphical capabilities.

Final Fantasy IX is near and dear to our hearts, and this non-profit love letter is being created as a tribute to the masterpiece that is the 2000 original. We hope you enjoy our take and re-experience that whimsical charm that made the world of Gaia so captivating.

Hi, I'm trying to use the mod Garnet is the main character, but it only works if the game is in English and I'm using the game in Spanish. Does anyone know if there's a solution to make the mod work in Spanish?

@Archon I think this is a know issue that will be fixed soon. I think if you switch from PSX UI to small or big UI it will fix it for now.

@hellbiter88 What platform are you using? In the worst case you can manually edit the Memoria.ini file to activate mods. I have an example in the steam deck installation section.
