ALCO DL560C

Description
Specifications:
Introducing the WDM-3A class from the ALCO DL-560C series of Diesel-Electric Locomotives of Indian Railways. It features an ALCO 251B Diesel Engine with a top speed of 75 mph. The locomotive is equipped with standard EOS ESS 2.1 and WABSIM. I’ve put a bigger fuel tank for this loco than the real one. There is a single control stand instead of two due to space constraints. Some controls also differ than the real one due to differing requirements in the game. Many such changes are made to the loco, keeping in mind its role in Stormworks. This robust workhorse is ready to serve you, hauling trains of all types over long distances and across all terrains.
  • Price in game: $114721
  • Mass: 8085 units
  • Length: 17 m (68 blocks)
  • Breadth: 3.25 m (13 blocks)

Lore:
The ALCO DL560C is a series of Diesel-Electric Locomotives with AC electric transmission. It was designed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and produced under license by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, India for Indian Railways as their classes WDM-2, WDM-3A/2C, WDM-3D and WDG-3A respectively. It is fitted with a 16-cylinder ALCO 251B/C diesel engine.

In the early 1960s, Indian Railways needed a reliable diesel workhorse to replace its Steam Locomotive fleet. Trials were conducted with equal numbers (40 each) of ALCO's DL560C and EMD GT16. More of each were purchased for additional trials.

Indian Railways wanted to produce the locomotives in the country, rather than import them. EMD refused to grant Transfer-of-Technology, while ALCO agreed. This was a deciding factor in choosing the ALCO DL560C over the EMD GT16. The loco was easy to maintain, reliable and simple to operate. Since then, vast numbers of this locomotive have been produced in different configurations, making it one of the main diesel traction powers of Indian Railways. The loco has been widely used across India for long-distance passenger trains due to its ruggedness and high tractive loads and acceleration.

In the various variants of the DL560C, the WDM-3A is a class of locomotives that was developed in 1993 by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi for Indian Railways. The model name stands for Broad Gauge (W), Diesel (D), Mixed traffic (M) engine, with 3300 horsepower (3A). The WDM-3A is a later classification of earlier WDM-2C. They entered service in 1994. A total of 143+ units were built at ALCO and BLW between 1994 and 2003 with rest of the 1246 units being rebuilt from WDM-2 which made them the most numerous class of mainline diesel locomotive until the advent of WDG-4.

The WDM-3A is one of the most successful locomotives of Indian Railways, serving both passenger and freight trains for over 26 years. As the locomotives got older, few units were exported to neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Despite the introduction of more modern types of locomotives like WDG-4 and electrification, a significant number of ALCOs are still in use, both in mainline and departmental duties.

Operations Manual:
Startup Procedure -
  • Flick on the knife switch located on the front of the cab near the parking brake.
  • On the back of the cab, flick all the circuit breakers on.
  • On the right side of the control stand, flick on the "Control & Fuel Pump" and "Dynamic Brake Circuit Breaker".
  • Now hold the Start Engine button till you hear the engine priming noise.
  • Once the engine is up and running, put the isolation switch from “start/stop/isolate” to “run” position.
  • On the same right side of the control stand, set the brakes to “Cut-in” and set the MU-2A to "lead", and you're good to go.

Shutdown Procedure -
  • Make sure that the Isolation switch is in “Start/Stop/Isolate” position
  • Press the Stop Engine/Emergency Fuel Cutoff (EFCO) button for minimum 4 seconds, and check if the engine rpm has gone below 170 rpm

Engine Slave System -
For Multiple Units (MU), connect the locomotive consist via cable anchors to one another. Then follow the instructions below for either the master or the slave based on which one you are setting up. Note: Although Indian Railways doesn't use DPUs, I've still put in the feature, as it was already there with ESS.
  • Master (Leading Locomotive): For the master locomotive, make sure that the engine run breaker is on. If there are any distributed power units (DPUs) in the train, set the frequency on the DPU controller and ensure the antenna is transmitting. It is set at receive by default. That is all for engine controls. For headlights, refer to the ESS description. Also, make sure that the brake valve is cut-in and the MU-2A is set to lead for the master locomotive.
  • Slave (Trailing Locomotive): For the slave unit, keep the engine run breaker set to "off." Cut out the brake valve, and set MU-2A to "Trail.”
  • DPU: To use DPUs, keep the engine run breaker off and set the frequency on the DPU panel to match the master's frequency. The DPU controls are located besides all the circuit breakers on the main panel. Make sure the antenna is set to receive and not transmit (it is set to receive by default). If your locomotive is facing the opposite direction of the Master, invert the loco direction. Then flip on the "Enable DPU Slave Mode" breaker. Now your DPU will receive commands over radio. Simply set the headlights to "Lead/Intermediate/DPU" for localized headlight control.
