Introduction
I hope that what I've collected together here are some really basic bits of utility that will open the game up for new and old players, as well as some useful tips and features to use when you practice.

Format of the Screenshot sections
  • Each map usually has 3 sections: "A", "Mid", and "B", which each contain 2-3 smokes or other bits of Utility that help gain map control for Terrorists.
  • Each line-up will feature an image or two of where to stand (use the radar if this isn't quite clear), then where to look with instructions of how to throw the utility, followed by images of the result.

I recommend getting familiar with the line-ups you want to use by practicing in an offline-practice-server first. This is really easy to set up, and I'll show you how in the chapters at the end of the guide.

Nerdy-bits at the end of the guide

After all the screenshots, the guide features:
  • Annotated-Map-Node file downloads
  • Instructions on how to Host a Local Practice Server
  • A simple recommended set of commands and binds to use when practicing.
  • An even nerdier advanced set of commands and binds to use when practicing.

Once you're comfortable with what you've practiced, keep this guide open in the Steam Overlay as a reference to remind you of where to stand and what to look at.
Lining-Up
  • I've tried to prioritise Line-Ups that are easy to remember and visually distinct.
  • As far as possible I have avoided line-ups that require pixel-perfect precision, as they're unreliable.
  • Most line-ups are just aiming directly at some visible feature of the map but in some instances there are no useful indicators visible in-line with your crosshair.

You don't need to think about this until you get to those particular line-ups in the guide!

But for clarification:
In the instances where there isn't anything obvious to line-up your crosshair with, some line-ups make use of the Grenade Line-Up Reticle, and others use the "tip" of the smoke grenade model itself, while others require lining up the circular Terrorist Logo at the bottom of your screen.

I've only used these as a last resort, or when something really cool could be achieved. Whenever I find newer line-ups that are simpler, I change them out.
Types of Throws
There are many different ways to throw utility, each giving a different amount of energy or momentum to the utility when it is released.
The main types of throw used in this guide are:
  • Regular Throw - stand still and press Mouse 1
  • Jump Throw - Hold Mouse1, Jump, quickly release Mouse1
Less-Common Types of Throws, but occasionally used in this guide:
  • Middle-Click Throw - Hold Mouse 1 and Mouse2, release them at the same time (gives a middle-distance throw)
  • Jump Middle-Click Throw - Hold Mouse 1 and Mouse2, Jump, quickly release both mouse buttons (gives a middle-distance throw with more energy)
"Tap W Jump-Throws"
I have avoided "w+ jump throw" line-ups, as I find them unreliable, but many people do use them. This is where you do a jump throw and tap "w" to move forwards as you do it, giving the utility even more momentum than a normal Jump Throw.

ANCIENT: AAA (Temple, CT/Short, Donut)
  • Temple
  • CT-Spawn/Short
  • Donut

Temple
Thrown from outside A-Tunnels.
Same location as CT-Spawn/Short Smoke, below.
Stand here:
Find point of resistance by aiming at this white mark while holding W.
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Third hole across in the top row:
CT-Spawn/Short
Thrown from outside A-Tunnels.
Same location as Temple Smoke, above.
Stand here:
Find point of resistance by aiming at this white mark while holding W.
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Donut
Thrown from outside A-Tunnels.
Stand here:
Stand centrally against this stone:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

  • Red-Room
  • Catwalk

Red-Room / House
Thrown from T-Spawn.
Stand here:
Place the tip of the Smoke Grenade Pin in line with the top of this brick:
Anywhere on this line is fine!
Now you should be looking here, JUMP THROW:

Catwalk
Thrown from outside T-Spawn, towards A-site.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

ANCIENT: BBB (Short, Long, Ninja Molotov)
  • Short
  • Long
  • Ninja - Nade & Molotov set

Short
Thrown from outside B-Site.
Same location as Long Smoke, below.
Stand here:
Look here, and JUMP THROW:

Long
Thrown from outside B-Site.
Same location as Short Smoke, above.
Look here, and JUMP THROW:

ANUBIS: AAA (Heaven, Half-Wall Molotov, Camera)
  • (A exec) Heaven Smoke
  • (A exec) Half-Wall Molotov
  • (A exec) Flash
  • Camera Smoke
  • Quick Half-Wall Smoke

A-Execute Utility Set all thrown from same position: Heaven Smoke, Half-Wall Molotov, Flash. Combine this with the Camera Smoke thrown by your teammate.
Stand here:

Heaven
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Look for the slightly larger dark hole at the top of this break in the planks of the pallet.

Half-Wall Molotov
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
Aim at the gap between the top of the railing, and the underside of the arch.

Flash
This flash gets almost every spot on site. However, the CT's can hide behind Cake, and aren't very blind if they're hiding by the wall on lower-stairs. Check Cake and Stairs, if they're clear, there's probably someone waiting in Heaven. It pops behind the wall so it's relatively good at not getting your teammates, but be sure to call it out!

Aim at the middle of this brick and REGULAR THROW:

Camera
Stand in this corner:
Aim here and REGULAR THROW:
You want to aim at the "tip" of this triangle shape. Slightly to the right of where these triangles meet.

Quick Half-Wall Smoke
Thrown from Canal/Water.
Stand here:
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
Aim at the very centre of this panel:
ANUBIS: Mid (Connector/E-Box, House)
  • Connector/E-Box for Canals Access - from Payphones
  • Connector/E-Box for Canals Access - from T-Spawn
  • House/Mid Smoke from T-Spawn

Connector/E-Box for Canals Access
Thrown from Payphones.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Look at the lower of the two bricks protruding from this wall.
Blocks view of canals from Connector and allows lurker to sneak into B.

Connector/E-Box for Canals Access
Thrown from T-Spawn.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Look at the very top of this small mark:

Smoke for House/Mid
Thrown from T-Spawn.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Look at the corner of this building.
ANUBIS: BBB (CT & Palace, Back-Site & Ninja, Pillar Molotov's)
  • CT & Palace
  • Back-site & Ninja
  • Pillar Molotov's

CT & Palace
Thrown from outside B-Site.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Back-Site & Ninja
Thrown from outside B-Site.
This smoke pops on the front ledge of Back Site, so anyone playing ninja will be blocked off.
Stand here:
Locate yourself against the wall, standing on the join of these two bricks:
Look here, between the hand and the eyes of the wall-drawing, and JUMP THROW:

Pillar Molotov's
Thrown from outside B-Site.
To throw these reliably you need to be a certain distance from the wall with the jail-cell door:
Either find this little triangle on your Right, or line up with this part of the water on your Left.
Look at the edge of this shadow, this is what you aim at when you JUMP THROW
Pay attention to the bit of sky you can see through the window above. If you're further left, this will pop closer to B main. If you're further right, it will pop closer to connector. Ideally you throw 2 molotovs here and burn both areas!

DUST 2: AAA (CT-spawn A-Side)
CT-spawn from short (map control for taking A-site)
Thrown from Short
Stand here:
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
DUST 2: Mid (Mid-Doors, X-Box)
  • Mid-Doors from T-Spawn
  • Mid-Doors from Suicide
  • X-Box

Mid-Doors from T-Spawn
Stand here:
Position yourself against this gap in the flagstones:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Mid-Doors from Suicide
Thrown from Suicide
Stand here:
Find this lower-right rivet:
Look here and REGULAR THROW:

X-Box
Thrown from T-Spawn/Yellow Taxi
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

DUST 2: BBB (CT-spawn B-side, B-Doors, Window)
  • B-Doors
  • Window
  • CT-spawn B-side from football (map control for taking B-site)

B-Doors Smoke
Thrown from T-Spawn/Football
Stand here:
(same location as CT-B-side Map-Control Smoke)
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Line up your Terrorist Logo with the underside of this window ledge, and place your vertical line-up-overlay centrally between the pottery and the window-frame:
Reliably lands in the doorway with good timing for teammates, in some instances it pops very fast, with practice I think you could achieve that more reliably by getting familiar with the exact line-up that pops almost instantly.

Window
Thrown from outside B-Tunnels
(yes this is fussy, but it seems to be one of the hardest smokes in the game to land reliably. This is the best line-up I've found yet in terms of reliability.)
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Place your crosshair centrally above the top of these two dots on the wall, and the left-side "5" mark positioned against the other brown mark as shown:

CT-Spawn B-side (map control for taking B-site)
Thrown from T-Spawn/Football
updated 30/Oct/2024
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Aim at the top of the white edge of the building, directly below the end of this bit of the Antenna (Antenna tip was the old line-up)
INFERNO: AAA (Moto, Pit, Long)
  • Moto
  • Pit
  • Long

Moto
Thrown from Second-Mid. Same location as Pit-Smoke.
Blocks vision from Library & Long
Stand here:
Look here, and JUMP THROW

Pit
Thrown from Second-Mid, same location as Moto-Smoke.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Doesn't need to be super-accurate, but if you do aim slightly to the upper-left of this corner, the smoke usually pops very fast.

Long
Stand here:
Find the centre of the window-grate and stand against the wall:
Aim at the corner of this roof and REGULAR THROW:
Can be used as Lurk smoke:

INFERNO: BBB (Smokes: CT, CT-Boost, Coffins. Molotovs: New-Box, Oranges, Left-Boost)
  • CT & CT-Boost
  • Coffins
  • New-Box Molotov
  • 1st Oranges Nade
  • Site-Boost & 1st Oranges Molotov

Smoke CT & CT-Boost
Updated and working April 2025 (Banana made wider in update)
Stand here:
**New** Find this mark:
Stand on top of it:

Look here (just like you used to) and REGULAR THROW:

Coffins
Thrown from Half-Wall.
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Molotov Back-Box/New-Box
Thrown from Car/Barrels.
Stand here:

Look here and JUMP THROW:

Stairs Smoke - Thrown from outside A-ramp
Stand here (same corner as Jungle Smoke):
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Line up the bottom of the Right-Hand "3" marker with the end of this Antenna as shown:

Both Smokes give complete coverage from Stairs, Connector and Jungle.

CT-Spawn/Ticket
Thrown from outside A-ramp
Stand here, against this wall:
Stand in line with this gap in the bricks:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
MIRAGE: Mid (Window, Connector, Short, Catwalk)
  • Window
  • Window re-smoke from Top-Mid boxes
  • Connector
  • Short (allowing entry to Ladder-Room)
  • Catwalk (gives cover to cross onto Top-Mid boxes)

Window
Thrown from T-Spawn
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW while holding down "d":
You need to hold "d" so you are moving slightly when throwing, this gives the smoke a tiny bit more momentum so it lands in the window. Practice this and it is completely consistent and reliable.
Get in position. Hold down "d". Jump Throw.

Window re-smoke from Top Mid
Thrown from Top-Mid
CROUCH here:
Look here, crouch, and REGULAR THROW:

Connector
Thrown from T-Spawn
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Garage
Thrown from T-Spawn/Yellow Dumpster
Stand in this corner here:
Look here (details below) and JUMP THROW:
Line up the very tip of the Smoke Grenade Pin with the line going across the wall, at the edge of the wall. This bit:

Yard
Thrown from outside Lobby/T-Spawn
This Smoke is intended to close the gap leftover between the above 2 smokes, Main and Garage. It completes a good wall of smoke cover for a T-team to head down Secret.

Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Cover this from view using the Terrorist Logo at the bottom of your screen:

Use your terrorist logo to cover the large pipe next to Silo:

TRAIN: AAA (Connector, Camera, Sandwich, Hell)
  • Connector
  • Camera
  • Sandwich
  • Hell

Connector
Thrown from Rusty-Post in T-Spawn
Stand here:
Look here...
Position the left-hand line coming out of your Terrorist Circle emblem on the bottom-right corner of this blue sign:
...and JUMP THROW:

Camera
Thrown from Rusty-Post in T-Spawn
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

Sandwich
Thrown from Rusty-Post in T-Spawn

Position -2y on the glass of this window pane:

TRAIN: BBB (Connector)
  • Connector from Upper B (provides more cover from CT-spawn)
  • Connector from Long-Dog Stairs (less CT-spawn cover, but much more risky for CT to push through on rotate/retake)

Connector from Uppers
Thrown from Upper B
Stand here:
Position the Tip of your Smoke Grenade in line with this window-frame corner.
Hold Shift+W to Walk forwards and REGULAR THROW:

Connector from Long-Dog Stairs
Thrown from Long-Dog Stairs/Control
Break window, then stand here:
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
Window must be broken!

CT: Ancient (B-ramp, Elbow)
B - Ramp from CT spawn
(Good for defensive and retake - Lands before Terrorists can rush site at round start)
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
CT: Anubis (A-Main, Mid, B-Main)
CT: Dust-2 (Long-Doors, Top-Mid)
Long Doors (defensive CT smoke)
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Aim at the bottom of this white cable.
CT: Inferno (Mid, Ramp, Top-Car, A-Balcony)
INFERNO: Mid - allowing for Second-Mid offensive push
Thrown from CT-Spawn

Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Line up the front pixel of the Smoke Grenade Model with the intersection of the balcony railing and the wooden window frame:
This bit:

Inferno - CT
  • B - Banana (assist your CT teammates defending B, thrown from A-Long)
  • T-Ramp from CT-Spawn (defensive smoke)
  • A - Balcony from CT-Spawn (retake smoke)

Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:

B - Banana (assist your teammates defending B. Delaying smoke thrown from A-Long)
Stand here:
This corner is a bit slippery so face here to meet the point of resistance:
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
Result is a bit deep into Banana but it is an easy Smoke to throw.

INFERNO: Mid - allowing for Second-Mid offensive push
Thrown from CT-Spawn

Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
Line up the front pixel of the Smoke Grenade Model with the intersection of the balcony railing and the wooden window frame:
This bit:

CT: Nuke (Silo)
NUKE: Smoke Silo from Outside
Thrown from CT/Garage
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
(aim at the lower-right corner of the 4th window)

Smoke Silo from A-site
Stand here:
As long as you are reasonably close to this spot, the smoke should work. Practice recommended.
Look here and REGULAR THROW:
Visibility is reduced but not covered completely. Terrorists will be more exposed and vulnerable when peeking.

CT: Mirage (Palace, B-Apps, Under Molotov)
B-apartment Windows from CT Spawn
Stand here:
Look here and JUMP THROW:
CT: Train (A-Retake)
Console Commands & Binds (recommended)
I recommend pasting the following lines into the console to open up your options while practicing your utility line-ups. Or make things even easier and paste them into a config file for smoke-practice!

sv_cheats true
sv_infinite_ammo 1
ammo_grenade_limit_total 6
mp_roundtime_defuse 500.000000
mp_team_intro_time 0
mp_maxmoney 65535
mp_startmoney 65535
mp_afterroundmoney 65535
mp_buy_anywhere 1
mp_buytime 3600
mp_warmup_end

For a more comprehensive list, check out the Advanced section at the end of the guide.

Useful Binds:
These all require sv_cheats true to be put in console, or in your config. Change the keys used to your liking.

Fly around the map:
bind x "noclip"

Re-throw Utility:
bind F6 "sv_rethrow_last_grenade"

End the round:
bind F7 "endround"

Remove current smokes from the map:
bind F9 "ent_fire smokegrenade_projectile kill; stopsound"

Config files go here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg

It just needs to be a text file made in notepad with the file extension .cfg

How to load up a config:
If your config is called smokes.cfg open the console once you're in a practice server and type:
exec smokes

About sv_cheats
Don't worry about trying to run a config with sv_cheats true in a competitive game, you won't get in trouble. It just doesn't work.
Console Commands & Binds (advanced)
These are the commands that I highly recommend including in your smoke-practice config, you don't need to bind them to a key.

sv_cheats true
mp_maxmoney 65535
mp_startmoney 65535
mp_afterroundmoney 65535
mp_buy_anywhere 1
mp_buytime 3600
mp_warmup_pausetimer 1
sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview true
sv_infinite_ammo 1
ammo_grenade_limit_total 6
mp_fists_replace_melee true
mp_drop_knife_enable true
give weapon_healthshot
mp_death_drop_healthshot true
healthshot_health 100
mp_roundtime_defuse 500.000000
mp_roundtime_hostage 500.000000
mp_team_intro_time 0
mp_freezetime 0
mp_warmup_end
sv_allow_annotations 1

Comments:
// is for comments and notes - ignored by CS2, these are useful to remind yourself what things do

Advanced Binds:
These all require sv_cheats true to be put in console, or in your config. Change the keys used to your liking.

Fly around the map:
bind x "noclip"

Heal:
// Will change Hud colour to red when active.

bind "F5" "heal"
alias "heal" "sv_regeneration_force_on 1;cl_hud_color 6; bind "F5" "noheal"
alias "noheal" "sv_regeneration_force_on 0;cl_hud_color 2; bind "F5" heal"

Re-throw Utility:
bind F6 "sv_rethrow_last_grenade"

End the round:
bind F7 "endround"

Remove current smokes from the map:
bind F9 "ent_fire smokegrenade_projectile kill; stopsound"

Buy all the equipment you need to practice utility with one button:
bind END "buy flashbang; buy hegrenade; buy smokegrenade; buy molotov;buy decoy;buy taser; buy defuser; buy rifle0; buy vesthelm"

You can download the two configuration files I use here:
smokepractice.cfg
https://pastebin.com/sKtag1s8

comp.cfg
https://pastebin.com/HxP0p5mE

Config files go here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\csgo\cfg

Whether you use mine, edit it, or make your own from scratch, it just needs to be a text file made in notepad with the file extension .cfg

How to load up a config:
If your config is called smokes.cfg open the console once you're in a practice server and type:
exec smokes

Launch Options (in steam)
Once you're happy with your config, add +exec comp (or, +exec yourconfigfilename) into the CS2 launch options to ensure it (and not your smoke config) is executed on program start.

The Toggle

Toggle between 2 different configurations, one for general games "comp.cfg" and one for practicing utility "smokepractice.cfg"

Put this at the top of your document "smokepractice.cfg"
bind "F11" "comp"
alias "comp" "exec comp.cfg; bind F11 smokepractice;cl_hud_color 9"
And put this at the top of your "comp.cfg" document
bind "F11" "smokepractice"
alias "smokepractice" "exec smokepractice.cfg; bind F11 comp;cl_hud_color 2"

Be sure to set up both files, as F11 will toggle between the two configurations, so without the other, you will get stuck on one of them. The HUD will change colour to help you see what you have switched to, you can change these values to your liking.

It may be useful to have a re-set bind when setting up the config-toggle-bind, that you have in both documents. E.g:
bind F10 "exec comp"

Wow! I have learnt all these smokes and use them in all Counter Strike games. They are so useful and have improved me as a player. Keep up the excellent work.
