History
BRDA was one of 21 trawlers type B-10 of Polish design, they were built as the first larger vessels under the supervision of PRS. The designers of the ship were employees of CBKO (Central Office of Ship Structures) engineers Janusz Staszewski, Stefan Pup and MSc. Jerzy Zubrzycki. Brda was built as the 14th unit in the series by the Northern Shipyard in Gdańsk in 1955 and was the only one in the series to end its life tragically. The others, decommissioned in the 1970s, were used as training ships (Łużyca in WSM Szczecin, Raba as Jan Turlejski), served as steam boiler houses in fishing enterprises or were scrapped.
The ships were equipped with a "Fredrikstad" type steam engine, a two-pressure, 4-cylinder superheated steam engine with a power of 900 hp, manually powered by coal, modernized in the years 61-65 and adapted to fuel mazut boilers. The ship had an overall length of 59.2 m, a construction width of 9.0 m, a lateral height of 4.9 m, an average draft of 4.32 m, a capacity of BRT 615 RT, number of crew of 28-29 people, autonomy of sailing 28 days (oil fuel) 25 days (coal).

On St Brda, fishing in the North Sea, the first mate fell ill with otitis media. The radio officer was also sick. Attempts to treat with streptomycin available on the cutter (the order was issued by a doctor from Gdynia consulting via radio) were unsuccessful. In this situation, the captain of the ship was ordered to enter the port and hand over the sick man to land.

The ship arrived near the port in the evening and, despite the high sea level, decided to try to enter. While entering the port, the ship was carried by the current to the left of the fairway towards the head of the breakwater and hit the bottom, which led to damage to the rudder and its locking in the starboard position. In this situation, Captain Andrzej Zieliński dropped both anchors.

The catastrophe occurred on the night of January 9/10, 1975 on the roadstead of the Hanstholm port. The storming "Brda" broke first from one and then from the other anchor. The captain did not decide to save the situation by maneuvering the machine. "Brda" drifted stern onto the star blocks of the inner breakwater, turned on them as if on a hinge, positioned itself parallel to this breakwater and then laid on its side with the superstructure facing outwards. The entire 27-person crew managed to leave the inside of the hull and gathered in two groups: in the bow and amidships near the bridge.

Still at anchors, Captain Brda asked the harbor master for tugboats. The port of Hanstholm did not have full-time tugboats and rescue vessels (the Maritime Chamber considered it a negligence of the management), so the Danish trawler staying in the port undertook towing. The departure of this ship was delayed as the terms of payment for the salvage operation were negotiated first. Earlier, it was proposed to take on the crew, which the captain of "Brda" did not want to agree to - no agreement was reached before the disaster.

He also tried to ask for help from the sister ship "Barycz" staying in the port, but its captain refused to sail, citing the fatigue of the crew after a long voyage.

When the "Brda" broke anchor, the crew of "Barycz" suggested to the captain that he set sail immediately in order to try to rescue the crew of "Brda", but he refused.

The summoned rescue helicopter first picked up the group of seven from the bow. While putting her ashore at about 1:30 a.m. a great storm wave hit the hull and washed away the remaining group of 10 crew members between the hull and the breakwater, onto the mazut-flooded wavebreakers. The Danes and the crew of "Brda" tried to help the survivors from the breakwater, but none of the washed-up sailors could be saved, because the strength of the waves was so great that the sailors died smashed against concrete blocks, and only five mutilated bodies were recovered from the water. Of the rest of the crew picked up by helicopter, one of the survivors died in hospital of a heart attack.

The wreck of the "Brda" was completely broken up by the sea shortly after the catastrophe.
