Another solution could be to mask the controller as an Xbox 360 controller on the hardware level using an external program. I suggest using either DS4Windows or SCPToolkit for PlayStation controllers, and Xbox 360 Controller Emulator for other controllers.

What controller are you using? If it's an 8bitdo controller, a solution I saw online was to enable generic controller support, though I haven't been able to try this myself so I can't verify.
