Banditry and Psychosis Made Easy (OUTDATED was for 0.52)
Von June Mirth und 1 Helfern
In this guide, I'll teach you how to deal with players in a friendly or not so friendly manner, basic survival, crafting, the health system, loot locations, the map itself, combat tips, proper torture and execution, and anything else that you want to know. UPDATED WITH CAR SPAWN LOCATIONS IN MAPS

This hasn't been updated in years, a lot of information is outdated since they came to 1.0 and are reintroducing minor content every 6 months. I'd rewrite this if I still even played DayZ regularly. I just notice on occasion this gets commented on, either people thanking me for some of the useful information or to get mad for some reason. Regardless, thanks for reading this exceedingly long guide on how to not shoot someone in the face.

Why am I a bandit?
First of all I play as a bandit because its fun, it makes player interaction interesting, and gives others players something other than the zombies to worry about. As an additional note thanks for reading this. I hope you take something from this and put it to use in game because I get a little tired of running into people who shoot first and ask questions later rather than talk to me. Seriously though, at least say "Hi" before you shoot me in the face. Without further adieu lets get on with getting you familiarized with some basic stuff that you probably already know.

Also by using the maps above you can customize the settings to find the locations of the new car, the V3S Truck.

If you have a smart phone, look up IZurvive, it is a DayZ Stand Alone map app, and has helped me out many times, it has detailed loot spawns which are toggle-able, and you can set up groups on it to mark your locations, and other such things. Or if you don't have a smart phone or other such device you can visit the site. IZurvive is an accurate map and constantly updates, it also has different settings for the type of map you to use (topographic, or satellite).
Health System Explained
Now, I've notice that not all that many players know how the medical system works in DayZ, but don't worry its relatively simple. But I will be honest, I can't tell you how it all works in great detail because I have a more basic understanding of how it works, but I will link a video explaining better than I can (but sadly the majority of them are like 20 minutes). So to begin we will talk about food and water.

How to keep Healthy

Pretty much everything will somehow tie into the health system, which is what makes it complex, the damage you receive, how full your inventory is (actually has an impact on how likely you are to bleed).

So pretty much lets say you start out as a freshie, you just died in any number of possible ways all common or very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up (I drowned a player some time ago), anyway to the point, you're hungry, thirsty, and on the look for gear. Well, just cram food and water down your throat until you achieve the status of Light Green Hydrated and Light Green Energized. Onc eyou have these statuses you will get the Healthy status, and when you are healthy you will start to regenerate blood and health much more quickly. That is the most basic understanding you will need, but there is much more to it.

In DayZ there are many different statuses and "cylinders" that need filling or emptying to make you healthy.

Basically to get to healthy, you need a high blood count which I think is 5000, a high food count, and hydration count, and basically no "shock" (which is basically when your screen starts to get blurry, or you get knocked up in a few punches or melee hits, but were otherwise healthy)

As far as I know to keep this up high just keep yourself from bleeding and ♥♥♥♥ and if you have lost blood get a friend to hit you up with a saline bag, or a blood bag if you know what your and your friends blood type is in game, what? You don't know? Well just go looking around for a blood test kit and make test your blood. But before transpiring the blood make sure you know which kinds are compatible.

A blood transusion will give your friend a lot of blood, about 1000 units of blood, but a saline bag can be used on anyone without fear of compatibility failures, but only gives 500 blood (if you ask me its much safer), but you must be wondering how to tell how much blood you've lost, and you may think its based on how blurry your screen is, its actually based on how desaturated (black and white) you see the world

The more blood you have the more colour you can see, simple right? And on the other hand of the spectrum is shock, which the more you have, the more likely you will be to be knocked out. Basically your "shock" meter rises with the damage you receive and makes your vision blurry, but your health being lowered supposedly does the same thing.

Basically the more damage you take, the more blood you lose, and the more damage you take, your shock meter rises and your health lowers, and if your "shock" meter goes above how much blood you have, you will go unconscious. and when you are out of blood, you will die.

Now there is a lot more to health, but I do not know it, and the things I do, I find hard to explain and you're not here to learn about health, but how to be a bandit.

Bone Status

Another little known status of DayZ is the Bone Status To put it simply, over time as you take damage your "bone status" deteriorates and cannot be replenished.

Sickness

In DayZ you can get sick, which in itself is no big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deal because every sickness is easy to survive, there are several kinds of sickness, and they can all stack on one another.

Food Poisoning

Food poisoning comes from eating rotten food, or raw meat. To prevent getting this sickness you should use charcoal tablets to prevent getting sick, symptoms of sickness will progressively get worse. Starting with blood loss and increased dehydration, over time the status will change colours the close to red it is, the more damage it has done and the further along the sickness is. So to keep from dying from something so dumb just keep hydrated and keep eating and just don't eat yourself into a food coma.

Chemical Poisoning

To be afflicted by chemical poisoning you'd need to have drank disinfectant spray or alcohol tincture, as above it will progressively get worse until you pas out and die, unless you keep yourself well hydrated and fed, although blood loss and dehydration is much more severe with chemical poisoning so be sure to have a friend near by ready to give you saline or blood or whatever in case you pass out. Another symptom to worry about is repetitive vomiting.

Brain Disease/Prion Disease

The only way to attain this is through eating human flesh, raw, cooked, and even burnt has the chance to give you Kuru[en.wikipedia.org] (Thats the actual name of this brain disease but devs), the symptoms of Kuru are random laughing or crying every 3 to 6 minutes and twitching which will progressively get worse the longer you are alive, the twitching will start happening every few minutes to every few seconds, and this can be seen while aiming and other players will notice this if they observe you carefully. There is no cure, although you can prevent yourself from getting Kuru as long as you have burnt the human flesh and have charcoal tabs on hand to prevent food poisoning.

Medics Field Manual
In this section I'll be going over all the medical items and explaining what they do.

Bandages and Rags

In case you've started to bleed you'll need to bandage yourself up, you can use a bandage or a rag (or if you are really desperate you can use a sewing kit or a leather sewing kit to stitch up the wound). All you need to do is right click on it, or drag and drop it into your hands and choose the option to "use" the item to stop the bleeding.

Alcohol Tincture

In the event that you cannot find anything other than ruined rags, you can make them pristine again by using alcohol tincture on them.

Blood Test Kit

This is used to test another players blood to see if the the blood is compatible with one another.

Blood Bag Kit

This is what is used to drain 1000 blood from a player from their total of 5000, once the blood has been drained it will become a filled blood bag, but that's still of no use. You need to combine it with a IV Start Kit to make it a blood bag IV, and then you can transfer the 1000 units of blood to another player.

Saline Bag

This is basically the same as the blood bag, but it is already full and can transfer 500 units of blood to another player without having to drain another, and it is compatible with all blood types, although you still need to craft it with a IV Start Kit.

IV Start Kit

Craft this with a filled blood bag, or a saline bag to make a Blood Bag IV or a Saline Bag IV to transfer blood or saline to a player.

Morphine

Got busted knees? Or a fracture in your arm or leg? No problem, these powerful painkillers will literally make you walk again despite the fact that they are just painkillers (seriously though, they do that)

Splints

They literally do the same thing as morphine, see crafting section on how to make these.

Epinephrine Pen

Better known ad an Epi-Pen, these things will wake the nearly dead (unconscious). Good to have on you in case you or a friend go down and need to wake to the horrible reality that is the zombie apocalypse instead of resting their eyes and dreaming of better days (but they're probably yelling at you to get them up actually).

CPR
If you have neither a defib (that will likely fry your friend), or an epipen. You sould give them food, water, and saline or blood, along with that, every now and then use the scroll wheel on your mouse while aiming at said downed friend with nothing in your hands and keep slecing and choosing CPR, hopefully they will wake up to the sweet sound of moans and groans that float through Chernarus.

Defib

These things are supposed to awaken players with irregular pulses when they are unconscious, but it really is just a mobile electric chair and will fry the brains of whoever you use it on.

Syringe

Its useless

Charcoal Tabs

Ones upon a time, they used to be a cure-all drug, woke players up, brough back blood, cured poison, but now at the moment it does what it should and cures food poisoning.

Anti-biotics

Currently have no use.

Water Purification Tablets

At the moment they do not have a use, but once we can get sick from drinking contaminated water these will come in handy.

Vitamin Bottle

Supposedly these heal damage done to "shock" basically how blurry your screen is, according to this user right here. I haven't tested this myself, but I will take his word for it.

Pain killers

Currently do nothing.

Food and Healthy Eating
To survive in DayZ you'll need to keep yourself healthy, and no that doesn't mean going on some stupid diet where you can only eat a pea every 12 hours. Its all quite simple and you know all of this yes, but some people might not.

Canned Foods

Most canned food in DayZ provide you with energy as well as hydration, namely peaches, beans, and tuna. Although you need it get it open first. But thankfully, almost every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ item can be used to open canned food, seriously you can use ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brass knuckles and sledgehammers.

Fruits and vegetables

Fruits as you can imagine provide more hydration than vegetables and they all provide a decent amount of energy, not as much as canned food but its still all good.

Foraged food

At the moment in DayZ one can only forage two types of berries, Sambuscus Berries and Canina berries.

Dry Foods

Dry foods in DayZ take away hydration but provides large amounts of energy.

Hunting
Alternatively, instead of searching for food you can always go searching for animals to hunt, currently you can hunt boars, deer, cows, goats, chicken, pigs, rabbit, people, or go fishing

Once you have killed the animal you will need to use a machete or a knife to skin the animal. After skinning the animal and acquiring the meat (and organs you can eat those too) you need to start a fire or use a gas stove with a cooking pot or frying pan to cook up the meat, this should take 10 minutes at most. Once cooked slam jam that ♥♥♥♥ in your mouth.

Liquids

Drink water to provide just hydration, or swallow down soda and beer to provide Hydration and Energization.

And if you can't find any water bottles or sodas; Just go looking for fresh water or a well to drink from.

SuperMarkets

These can provide food, water ,and lots of other loot. Like bags, clothes, and some melee weapons.

Loot Locations
Pretty Simple, I'll be generally outlining the possible loot to be found in certain buildings.
We'll start of with residential loot, most loot spawns are pretty straight forward, so you can skim through most of it.
Residential/Civilian Loot
Residential loot includes clothing (like hoodies, jeans, check shirts), Food and drinks, Low Tier Melee weapons (Meaning ♥♥♥♥♥♥ usually, depends on your tastes, I mean if it can kill someone its good as far as I'm concerned), basic ammunition (9mm, .357, small arms ammunition MOSTLY), Navigational equipment, and some small backpacks like children's and taloon bags.

The images are what buildings you will consistently find decent loot on, I also name buildings that generally have a common name, if I didn't leave a name for a building that you have one for that you hear most people using let me know.

Residential Loot Spawns

Notable Buildings

Piano House

Food Building

Cafe

Rasta House

Christmas Houses

Inn

Gun Cabin
This cabin looks similar to the rest, but it is about half the size as the one in the image and has almost the same designs as the food building above along the back of the house. You will almost always find a fire arm in these cabins, most towns have a few of them.

Apartment buildings
I would not recommenced looting these unless you are looking for a tent. Searching inside of these buildings is long and tedious, but since no one loots them you are sure to find a few things if you feel like wasting half an hour or more.

Other loot buildings

Industrial Loot
Industrial loot contains, Low Tier Melee Weapons, Tools (Wrenches, Axes, Matches, etc), Clothing, and some misc items (Burlap Sack, Handcuffs, paper, ropes, spray paint, etc)

Factories

Lumber Yard

Quarry

Construction Site

Warehouses

Workshop (Textiles Building)

Gas Station

Storage Units (Lockers)

Train Station

Barn Loot
Barn Loot is pretty much just industrial loot, but with more clothing, and some basic weapons, Mosin, and the IZH double barrel.

Cow Sheds (Barns/Long Barns)

Barns

Military Loot
Just as it sounds military equipment, weapons, attachments, ammo, camouflage, vests, helmets, food, large backpacks, and basic medical equipment, and pretty much everyone else.

ATC (Air Traffic Control Tower)

Barracks

Deer Stand (Supposed Loot spawns, I haven't seen any so far)

Fire Station

Hangers

Police station

The Prison

Officers Tent

Medical Loot
Pretty much as it states, medical gear. Nothing more to it.

Medical Center

Hospital

Medical Tents
Notable Loot Spawns
Pretty much either the most common spots you'll see around Chermarus, or the best spots to grab whatever you need.

The Barracks have many rooms for you to grab whatever it is you might need, some times though you may need to crawl to spot anything under the beds, or go into third to see what is stuck on top of a locker (THAT YOU CANT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ REACH).

The school building, its actually an office building, but It looks like the school from the Simpsons so..

Anyways you can find some decent loot in there, long horns possibly, a rifle, pistol, food, clothing, and some misc stuff. Most of the larger towns have one. Berenzino, Elektro, and some other towns I do not recall the name of.

Police stations are littered all around Chernarus, you'll find a lot of them in your travels, and they can house some decent gear in there, mp5s, hand guns, some clothing, and ammo obviously. Be sure to search the police cars, nit many people do so, the tops and the trunks.

Food buildings or whatever you want to call it (the ones with the blue detailed, shapey, thingies) is a saviour to starving players or well anyone in need of a bite to eat.

All buildings have more loot then is mentioned that is contained in them, and can all have some sort of other loot from some of the other types, medical loot generally spawns everywhere, same for clothing, explosives for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason can spawn everywhere.
Crafting
Medical

You can now also use ducktape to make splints.

Campfire

Bags

Burlap Courier bag (12 slots)

Burlap Improvised Bag (20 slots)

Boar Leather Courier Bag (16 slots)

Boar Leather Improvised Bag (25 slots)

Dear Pelt Sack (20 Slots)

Weaponry

Axes

Guns

Burlap Wrap (for the Mosin only currently) and Ghillie Suits
The old recipe for burlap wraps have been removed from the game and you know require to find netting to make burlap gun covers and Ghillie suits. Netting Spawns along the coast (Mostly) in wooden boats only, and can be found on the large crashed ship called Riffy.

Bow and Arrow

To make a bow you'll need to find and ashwood stick, the trees that spawn them are very distinct and fairly common throughout Chernarus.

That long stick is called an Ashwood stick, it has a very rare spawn. BUT you can chop down an Ashwood tree to find one. They look like this.

Arrows

Now that you've made a bow you might bot be able to find arrows, no worries friendo, you can sharpen sticks and combine them with feathers to make a primitive arrow.
"but where do I find feathers"
No worries mate just look for a chicken coop and start searching for feathers. And for the sticks just sharpen them with a knife.

Sharpened Stick

Hunting and Fishing

Fishing trap

Too lazy to fish yourself? No problem just make a fishing trap and dig up some worms with the shovel, combine the two and place it in the ocean and just sit back and impatiently wait for dumb fishes to swim inside for you to cook and eat on your glorious camp fire.

Rabbit Snare

I'll be honest here, I have no idea how this works.
Player types
There are many different players you'll meet in DayZ and all of them are unique, I'm not gonna go into some stupid class system and make up play styles that nobody actually does or anything like that, but I will be putting what players actually do. and not some garbage like this or this.

And remember these are just broad terms to describe players you'll meet, just lumped into 3 groups.
Heroes
A hero as implied is a gub guy who does gub things, giving food to hungry players, giving arms, protecting people. all that good ♥♥♥♥, trying to be a good neighbour in the apocalypse. Its pretty simple, a hero can look like anyone, and be anyone who you might not expect. Its a pretty simple. Heroes help others, and are quite obviously the enemy of bandits (Aside from almost everyone else).

Heroics in action

I don't exactly agree with the approach, and some of the other things, but this video will give you a general idea of how to hero. Just be friendly, and help others.
Neutrals/Survivors
The title literally says all of these players. They are generally safe to approach, if you can tell that is. They can sway in either direction of banditry, or heroics. And just generally do what they have to do to survive, whether that be giving someone they just met a drink and a gun, or robbing him blind.
This is a very vague type, its pretty much just a way of saying they don't associate with the other player types.
Bandit
Now here is petty much what you came for in the first place. Banditry. Pretty easy, rob people, lie, blah, blah, blah. Do I really need to give you an explanation on how to be a bandit? Well yes..I guess that's what you came for

I see that most people now associating the term bandit with someone who kills others on sight. And that is not a bandit, that is just your run of the mill asshat which I call the douche-bandit. You see players who KOS see this game not for player interaction, but just another shooter. Which can be pretty frustrating, now I know some people have their reasons for KOS. Being that this game is in alpha and there's not much more to do at the moment, but that doesn't excuse the fact that you didn't even say "Hello" before you shot my head clean off.

When I get into fire fights, or a situation, I like talking to my enemy. Its fun, its interesting and gives me a bit of player interaction, but they almost always (especially when they just camp with automatic weapons mind you, and KOS players) get angry with me, and tell me to be quiet for whatever reason, Because they would rather not use the mic that they bought to use, and juts sit around like this is call of duty, sit in a corner and wait for players to walk into the building they camp in, or they just don't understand that this isn't some shooter where there's 2 teams and they cant hear each other like pretty much every shooter out there.

Anyways sorry about that rant. but it needs to be said. Now I'm gonna tell you a story, about player interaction during a fire fight, this happened to me.

Some time ago, myself, Larry, and ray got onto a low pop server back when they first introduced cowboy hats into the game, I was dressed as a cowboy, chest holster, jeans check shirt, and of course the hat. We travelled to Balota to get some gear. We looted up pretty much every building except for the prison that was on the eastern end, so we walked inside and started looting. We went upstairs when Larry spotted someone at the bottom floor and he got shot and died. it was a group of three players. Ray and I shot down those steps and killed two of them, Ray died in the process. It was just me and this other player, waiting for me to come down the stairs so he could gun me down.

I never went down stairs, I went into the bunk room and got ready for him to come up and come inside. But then we started talking (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! AN ACTUAL CONVERSATION IN THIS GAME OH MY GOD), and eventually we just started swapping stories of past adventures in Chernarus. Eventually his team mates and my friends returned to the prison and we just sat in a circle and started sharing stories. That is when I learned that the other guy was dressed like a cowboy too, so the moral of this story is that this is player interaction, we diffused a gun fight, just by sharing stories. Take what of this story, maybe you learned something, maybe not.

Now back to banditry.

Some of you reading this will be going, "Bu ef u pleh es bendat, wy u wnt plyer innerction, u r big dummy". Well listen here you communist crotch jockey, I don't go around shooting people in the face unless they go around shooting people in the face without saying a word, and I don't go throwing around the word "friendly" and then waiting for some guy to come out to shoot him in the face (don't lie about being friendly and immediately killing them, pretend to befriend them and then betray them later on that is banditry).

Now before I get misunderstood, I do kill players, yes I do. But I don't lie about being friendly, and I don't just shoot people for no reason. I will give the player that I have spotted a warning, not a warning shot, I will yell at him to put his/her hands up, or to stop running, or to just stop. I give them a few warnings when they don't listen I open fire, aiming for the legs to slow them down, or just an attempt to knock them unconscious without killing them (That's your second lesson to be a proper bandit, give warnings, you can give them second chances, but I don't recommend that unless you can pacify them).

After that if they either willingly give themselves up or I pacify them, I will do a few things (some of these belong in psychosis, and I will explain them later, or you can skip to it). Usually, I rob them, or ask them questions, if they're insulting me for capturing them and calling me things like a kos asshat, or if they try to escape (not squirming, when they actually break the cuffs) I usually put them down, or try to break their legs so I can resume what I was doing.

Being a bandit is pretty simple, you are by far not required to play bandit my way, do whatever you want (usually robbery because a bandit is pretty much a thief) as long as its not kos. When you start to kos without a reason, you are not longer a bandit, you are an insecure d0uche canoe.

Here is an example of what started out as banditry but then ended with some heroics.

Psychosis
Now this is how I usually play, a mix of Banditry and Psychosis. Playing as a psychopath is one of the most fun things to do in this game, it pretty much includes, bashing in skulls with melee weapons, torturing players while they're handcuffed or unconscious, and well, just being unpredictable and seeming (as before, don't lie about being friendly, as much fun as betrayal is, have your mark assure themselves that they wont be hurt by you through the way you act, never tell someone you're friendly and then just shoot them when they show their face) like you are friendly until you have the chance to back stab them, but I don't mean by a simple bullet wound, trapping them in a situation they can't escape from, picking heir friends off one by one and leaving the survivor to a slow death. Pretty much just envelope this mentality, that everyone is a potential victim, fresh spawns, geared players, friends, random friendlies you just met. Befriend them and betray them or just go straight to the torture, whatever floats your boat, but remember play games with your victim, literally or metaphorically. Here are some examples of psychosis and a bit of banditry.

Psychotic Tips
Now every killer, has a preference or a type of way they operate. We just have to find yours. you can be the silent (COUGH FUC.KING COUGH KOS) type, a talkative one, or maybe a cult leader.

Now first a little bit of a lesson, most serial killers have a type of way they kill people and they do it more or less the same every time or kill similar victims (which is lame as fu.cking hell, get creative), usually these killers have been exposed to something traumatic or some sort of abuse in their life and it hasn't been dealt with and this damage manifests into these disorders (Also if you have experienced any sort of abuse or un-dealt with trauma the damage is usually irreparable once you reach adolescence) . Also a pattern in psychopaths is that they tend to have more white matter in the brain, which allows them to make faster decisions and in turn makes them better liars, and some people have the talent of "believing" their lies, so its very hard to pick up on lie detectors.

Anyway if you want to educate yourselves on serial killers, psychopaths, what have you. Go look into it yourselves. But lets get started with these tips.

Picking your Victim
You are welcome to choose anyone you want, but it would be preferable if you chose someone who is either less likely to fight back, not very well armed, and most importantly alone, separated from their group, or in a small group. Pick carefully, and keep watching them.

Stalking
Following your victim should be quite simple, stay low, and stay quiet, always keep a distance from them for them to not notice you. During this time you can be silent as a mouse and just wait for an opportunity to strike, or you can start messing with run, run around every now and then, reveal yourself and take off to hide to resume following them, playing music, laughing, playing audio. There is a whole host of things to do during this time, but I would learn about your victim, how they tend to play, if they're a good shot, if they have any friends nearby.

If they enter a large building with many doors or places to hide, be ready to head inside and hide in a room or a spot where they will go, or in a blind spot up ahead to ambush them. When they get there, swing, unload or attempt to handcuff, they'll probably be taken by surprise. If you have friends with you, have them appear from their spots when you (I'm assuming you're leading) shoot, or start swinging to quickly overwhelm your target. Be sure to try and take one alive, and to give your victim a warning if you'e going to kill them or attempt to handcuff, unless you start raving something incomprehensible and they'll get the idea.

The perfect time to strike would preferably be, when they're doing an action, eating, drinkig, you get the idea. Just wait for their back to be turned before you run in there to bash their skull in with your axe. If you're not in the mood for raving while coming at him, holster your weapon and attempt to talk to the guy, and assure him that you had many opportunities to kill him but didn't, that may make him less likely to shoot you, if he does just shoot you he's kind of a ♥♥♥♥, he didn't even give you a chance. But in his defence you were probably planning on backstabbing him later.

Of Masks and Men
Out There in the wild world of Chernarus, you'll encounter many people. And have many amazing adventures (granted you don't get KOSed halfway through), but aside from that, a travelling sadist, psychopath, or sociopath need to keep up with the latest fashions trends of the post apocalyptic world, and the latest trend is masks.

Also because of the psychological factor that when you can't tell the emotions or expressions of people wearing said mask, and the on lookers tend to become nervous, frightened, and you can potentially look like you'd love to tear the flesh from their faces and stitch them onto your own.

When seeing different masks or combinations of head items (limited as they are) I get a different feel from the player. Just look at these next images, and you'll see what I mean. Some will seem aggressive, authoritative, neutral, and even friendly. How you look is your first impression, so depending on how you want to make players feel around you, wear different mask, or none at all.

Just because these masks are associated this a certain feeling doesn't mean they are, its just they are perceived that way, wear whatever the hell you want, (unless its Generic Jim)

Clowns
These are my Personal favourite masks, especially the wolf Mask, I am usually seen wearing it. and If I don't have one, I usually don't care about my characters fate.

These masks are a nice good (warning) sign other plays that you are out to find a new "friend", and have a good time and play some fun (for you, maybe) party games.

Wolf

Dallas

Hoxton

Bags
The burlap sack can be used to block the view of you captive or it can be a fashionable head piece to let your new "friend" know he's going to be there for a long time. If you want to wear this over your head and see through it, use the Cover Own Head option, and after applying your new burlap mask, just log out and log back in, and you should be able to see.

Gas Mask and Respirator
These masks give off a more authoritative feeling from it, if you understand what I mean. Usually I associate the respirator with the appearance of being friendly.

Face Masks
The Face MasksI feel can be perceived in any way. Depends on personal experience maybe.

Examples

Group Play
Solo
When playing solo, paranoia is your friend, if you have a bad feeling, listen to it. If you're curious like me, try to keep a distance when figuring out where gun fire is coming from and always be cautious, one mistake and you can end up with a bullet..in your everywhere.. Treat every player as a potential threat, now that doesn't mean make a pre-emptive strike and just murder everyone you see, that'd make you a pompous turd goblin. But be cautious of them, and determine if they are safe to approach or if you'd best leave them be, and if you're solo again, it isn't wise to kill players. They might have friends online and you might have just pissed them off. Now that doesn't mean you cant kill players, its just unwise to.

Squads
A larger group in DayZ is pretty essential so survival, safety in numbers right. Well let me tell you a thing, a large group is nice and intimidating when they're all seen together, even seasoned bandits and players will think twice about messing with you, that is if you have anything above 5 members.
But that's the problem with large groups, too many people in a skype call or team speak, whatever it is that you use. Too many players n a call can get pretty messy when in a fire fight or in some other dangerous situation, unless you have some experienced players who know when and when not to talk. It is pretty much essential that you have a calm group during a fire fight, or whatever. If you end up having a team mate rage in open mic it can stop you from hearing your opponents movement or if they're speaking. Personally 5 people at most is a good for group play, 7 is manageable anything above that is just a hassle.

Assignments
Its important to assign players in larger groups. Having 5 players running around a town with automatic weapons is good and all. But you have no eyes on what's around you, divide up your group into who is ground crew, and over watch, and who is taking point?

If you have a larger group then that, you can divide up the town into sections and have each small squad assigned to a section of that town as to not accidentally shoot each other

Attire

When in large groups it is important to remember what every team mate looks like, just so you don't accidentally shoot them. All members could wear the same gear, face mask, bag, or anything really, even if you all look different find a way to be able to tell who is who. Either by remembering what they are wearing or by having every team member having some distinguishing feature. But whatever you do, do not look like these players, unless you are solo, or in a small group.

Those players are who we call "Generic Jim" they have no distinguishing qualities at all and can be mistaken for team mates or enemies in the heat of the moment. So never go "Generic Jim".

Clans
Clans. They are dumb. I'm not saying that any player is dumb by associating, founding,or being a part of a Clan. I'm saying its not very smart. You see, when you join a server and open the player list and spot a large clan playing on it, you know that all those guys, are working together. So when you I don't know break ones legs, handcuff one, kill one, you already have an idea of what you are dealing with, a large group of geared players. So it is very easy to keep track of how many there are left when you kill them. And usually implies they'll attempt to lock down a popular airfield or city.

How about another story, it is fairly short so don't worry. Larry, Dan, Noodle, Cheng, Jorstin and Myself went on to a high pop server, and were travelling to the North West Air Field, hoping to find a fight. We spied in the player list a clan of about 8, I can;t recall what clan it was, but we knew the (around) 8 players who we hoped to find. We made it all the way to the NWAF and we found a corpse inside a prison building. Players are here for sure, corpses de spawn if someone isn't very closely nearby, and we figure that body had to be there for a while for we had not heard gunshots while making our way to that building. We were then shot at from the doorway but made it out quickly enough so that no one was too seriously injured, told them to surrender. They didn't reply. It was clear that they weren't going to surrender any ways.

We quickly formulated a plan, Noodle would throw a frag grenade in there and once it went off we would rush inside and finish of any survivors. Noodle tosses the grenade into the doors, and closes them and we take cover. The grenade goes off, we rushed back inside to find a few corpses at the bottom of the steps, we check their names. Its the clan. We go to check upstairs and learn that more of them are upstairs. Noodle tosses another grenade and we bolt out of there, but he glitches and is stuck, the grenade goes off and he kills everyone in the building, including himself. We cautiously went upstairs and find a bunch of corpses up stairs . And check their pulses, low and behold. All the clan members are dead.

The corpses of the clan members.

Combat Tips & Tactics
As the title implies these next sections will be about fighting other players by using different tactics.
For starters lets go over the ones you probably already know.

Stalling
(Not exactly tactics, but whatever, you already know this) If you're ever handcuffed or in a situation where you can consider yourself a hostage, or just keeping your enemy busy until your team mates can get to you, or for them to figure out a way to handle the situation. Pretty much just keep talking to them, even if they don't reply, keep them thinking you guys are just playing the waiting game for them to move on you, when you're really planning to move on them, or you know, just actually trying to buy time for you to consider your options.

Zed Tracking
If you're ever dealing with a sniper or the location of an unknown assailant keep your eyes open for zombies. Zombies tend to be more of an annoyance now, being that they have fairly short re-spawn times and spawn close to where they died. To simply put it, zombies will go to the nearest player and start chasing after them. So look out for that. Its very handy for spotting snipers out in fields.

Baiting

A good way to bait players is to use something that will attract a lot of attention. As long as you're in hiding someone is sure to come investigate, and then you can strike.

A good way to bait players without wasting your precious ammo by shooting in the air in hopes that someone is dumb enough or is just itching for a fight to come and investigate. You can use these to get some attention

Flares

Chem Lights

Gas Lamp

Gas Stove

Lit flash lights

Camp fires

Don't know how to craft a fire place kit?

To find sticks you can either run around looting, or you can go into the woods and use search for kindling, or you can chop down a tree and chop the fire wood. Also if you want to light the fire, you'll need to drag and drop fire wood onto the camp fire kit, and use some matches to light it.

Incapacitating
When playing as a bandit or a psycho as fun as it is, just to blow your victim away and fill them with lead. Its more fun to keep them alive for a little bit to have some fun. The best way to slow a player down is a bullet to the knee (obligatory Skyrim joke here), giving your victim a broken leg is a sure fire way to get close enough to handcuff them or to make them forcibly give themselves up.

Now what gun is best to break legs with? That would be the Longhorn pistol, or the Mosin 9130 (Sawed off Mosin 9130 included), I think its probably because its a fairly large calibre (7.62 mm) bullet being lodged into their kneecap that easily cripples them.

Another way to incapacitate an enemy is to give them shot to the head, but not with just any gun, a very low calibre weapon. The Sport .22, and the Amphibia. They both fire .22 mm rounds that do such low damage a head shot will (usually) not kill a player, it may take a few bullets to their skull 2 to 4 at most, but they will get knocked out. And then you can do as you will with them.

The best thing about the sporter is that its ammo is very common, and it can fire as fast as you can click, has little to no recoil, and its magazines can hold 10 to 30 bullets.

Another item that can knock out ANY and I mean any player in one hit to the head NO MATTER WHAT is the brass knuckles, a solid punch to the skull will knock'em out long enough or you to do whatever is you want to do.

And here is a very underhanded way of incapacitating a player, get a random blood bag, or fill it with someone's blood. When you find your player ask him if he's injured, or if he needs blood or something, most will say no, so look for someone who has recently been in a fight or was beaten by zombies, give him this random blood bag. And in the next few moments if its incompatible, he'll be knocked out cold.

Now that your victim has either been knocked out, has surrendered, has been forcibly taken into your custody, you can now what what you will with him or her.
Torture, Execution and Party Games
There are many ways to destroy the body and will of players, and these are just some of them. I was so enthusiastic about this I had to split them into three sections for hitting the character limit.
Torture
Torture
In this current stage of DayZ there isn't many ways to torture players but there are ways let me tell you, all you have to do is think creatively.

Draining
Draining a player is quite simple, get a large amount of blood bags and start taking their blood, I am not sure how much blood a blood bag takes, or how many it takes to Drain a player until he is dead but its a good way to make them less likely to try and fight back or run.

Another form of draining is to feed them large amounts of rice until they are sufficiently dehydrated, or you know until they're dead.

Poisoning
At the moment since you can't poison players with rotten food, you can use raw meat from hunted game to give them salmonella poisoning, and I have seen first hand that they go unconscious in around ten minutes.

Another way most familiar to many players is using disinfectant spray to poison a player, which will give them chemical poisoning, unlike food poisoning which can be cured by charcoal tabs, chemical poisoning has no cure, the only way to survive it is to constantly eat and drink while having the healthy status effect.

Stuffing
Have large amounts of food, or water, maybe both. And just keep cramming it down there throat it helps if you have more players helping you to keep jamming food into their mouths, eventually they'll get sick and throw up. Keep this up and see what happens
Execution
Execution
There are many, many ways to finish off a player and all of them are fun.

Poisoning
As above poisoning someone is a pretty good way to torture them and to weaken them. Just make sure these people are either hungry, dehydrated, or just low on blood before you poison them if you want to execute them that way.

Draining
Draining someone of their blood or dehydrating them until they die is pretty fun, and hey, look at all these blood bags you can use on your team mates or enemies just make sure you know the blood type before you use them, you'll need a blood test kit to find out someones blood type, use a needle to take a sample and then drag and drop it on to the test kit to know what their blood type is.

Firing Squad
Line up with your friends and fire away, pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple (and frankly boring).

Beating
Use your hands to keep punching them until they die, its best to do this in a group to make it easier to quickly beat them to death (and with brass knuckles coming, it'll be even more fun).

The Drop
Take your captive on top of a tall building, and force them to jump, its even more fun if they have a bag on their head and can't tell where they're going.

Unfortunate Accident
Have your captive sit close to a gas pump, and shoot it. Its always entertaining, if you want to have some more fun, give him an axe, and force him to hit the gas pump until he goes up in a glorious inferno!

Zed Baiting
This one is a bit more difficult, but its still fun as hell. Lure some zombies to you, and try to get them to stop following you once you make it back to your captive, and have the zombies beat your captive to death.

Drowning
Added to the game in 0.50, players can now drown when their head is kept under water for a long period of time (around 2-3 minutes).

Suicide
Give your friend a loaded gun with a single bullet, or maybe a knife, something, and demand he sacrifice himself for you, unless he wants to stick around and play some games with you.
Party Games
Party games
Here are some fun games to play with your new (temporary) best friend in all of Chernarus, remember to have fun, and (don't) play safe.

Riddle me this
Ask your victim a riddle, or two or three, and if they get it wrong pass judgement down onto them, whether it be poison, broken legs, or plain and simple death.

Questions
Ask them some questions and see how they answer them, it could be anything, even your favourite colour. Pass judgement on them if they fail.

Somewhat Russian Roulette
It has been partially confirmed that you'll be able to play Russian roulette with your handy revolver. But at the moment you can't so give your victim a few choices of which gun or player has the gun with the bullets in it. If they guess correctly which gun is loaded, put a bullet in them.

Forced Conflict
This will require two captives. After you have somehow acquired your new friends, give them both food poisoning. Now tell them that if they want to be cured, they have to kill one another in a fight, the winner gets cured.

Singing
Tell your new friend to sing you a song and tell if he does it well you'll let him go, and if he does a bad job, well he'll find out.

Stand up
Let your captive know that if he does a good job of making you laugh, you'll set him free (with or without broken legs), if he can't make you laugh or even come up with a good joke, end him, or whatever it is you deem a worthy punishment of this failure.

Morphine Race
Break your new friends legs, and give him a time limit to crawl all the way to the morphine you place for him or her, if they run out of time, tell them you're disappointed and then put them down. If they make it to the morphine in time and fix their legs, either let them go, or keep playing some sweet party games. This can also be done with more than one victim and have them all race for the morphine, the losers can be dealt with any way you want.

Hide and Seek
This is my favourite game to play with my victims. At the moment it is a little bit difficult, but when they add bas building it will be extremely fun. Pretty much everyone knows how to play hide and seek, seeker counts to whatever hiders, try and hide until they are found or until the seeker gives up. So I recommend you keep your playmate in cuffs and let him try and hide and then you go to find him, I would also recommend having a time limit to that way you give them hope that they can survive. If found within the time limit, kill them or do whatever you want. with them. When base building is added, I would say to block a large area from all sides and bring victims into that wooded area, and tell them to hide for however many minutes you want. and if they are not found in this time they get to be let go, or other party games can be played.

Spotlight
Not many people know this camping game, it is sort of like Hide and Seek Tag. The seeker, or seeker has a flash light, and must shine the light on the hider and say "1, 2, 3 on Whoever" or "Spotlight on Whoever", then they are caught and have lost the game, and must wait until the remaining players are caught or the seekers have given up, but the hider must make it to home base without getting caught to win. Home base being whatever you deem their goal to make it to, this tree, this table, this block, I don't know. So if you have a gun with a flash light, you shoot them if you spot them, but not before saying either "1, 2, 3 on ____" or "Spotlight on ____", this will give the other players a sense of lost hope and impending doom.

Hunting Party
This game is like Hide and Seek and Spotlight, but your captive or captives will be given items that may help them survive the hunting parties attempts at killing them. You can give your captives all the same items, or different ones urging them to work together, or nothing at all, whatever floats your boat. So after gathering captives, choosing the area where the game will take place, and establishing the rules with your new friends, you can begin the hunt. Give them a head start, a minute or so should be enough. Then begin the hunt.

Simon Says
As placed in the comments by Hammer Hand. I can't believe I forgot this.
Pretty simple everyone knows how to play. After gathering your new friends, you being simon get to order your new "pals" around. Simon then orders all sorts of different things to be done, the funnier the better, which must be obeyed only when the order begins with “Simon says”.
Underhanded and Sneaky Tactics.
There are plenty of ways you can trick your opponent into trusting you, or having them believe you've left just so you can spring a trap on them, and here are a few ways how.

Pocket Pistol
This method only works if you're a fresh spawn. It is essential to look like a fresh spawn for this, as they appear to be harmless, and less likely to attack a geared player, or anyone else, remember to appear friendly. Firstly we're going have to find you a gun, preferably a magnum, because you don't need a mag for it, but any pistol is fine as long as you have a magazine in it, or some ammo, after you find your fire arm you can if you choose to (and I advise it), look for some cargo pants or hunter pants, so you can carry a spare mag or ammo with your handgun. Do not and I repeat DO NOT grab anything other than those items, no bags, no shirts, no glasses, or shoes, do not grab anything other than the Pistol, ammo for it, and a new pair of pants with 6 slots.

After getting the items you will need, go look for a geared player. When you find one use text chat preferably so they cannot locate you, say hello, talk to them for a bit, and keep your hands down, don't raise your fists, or anything of the sort. Once they seem to trust you enough, come out of your hiding place, you can now talk to them using the microphone. Run along with them for a little bit and when they trust you enough to start eating around you, say your goodbyes to whoever it is, and put a bullet in his brain. Now the gear is yours to take. You can choose to start firing at them whenever you please, but when their back is turned or when they're performing an action is best.

Reverse Baiting
Toss a flare, or anything that generates light into a building and close all the doors (or don't, but I would), after that find a hiding place outside of that building to keep an eye on it. Eventually players will come by to check out the flare to see if any players are present in the building, they will be disappointed. Either on their way out or while they are still inside get up and out there to shoot them (or to force them to surrender or any number of things), preferably have some companions with you in case you are out-gunned. The players you have baited to the building will not expect you and your friends to be coming in after them or to be waiting for them to exit the building, you'll have the element of surprise.

Suicide Bombing
If you and your friends are in a desperate situation, and you somehow have grenades on you, its time to undress or keep your ♥♥♥♥ on, whatever floats your boat. Find the building that your attackers are hiding in (if they're not hiding and they're out in the open it still works, just not as well). Have a grenade in your hand, run straight in, preferably from behind, then unpin the grenade and toss it at the ground, where you or you your opponent is standing, and get ready for you and everyone else around you to be blown to hell. After the grenade goes off, have your friends rush in and finish off whoever has somehow survived.

Ghosting
Don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do it.

Why bandits aren't all bad
Earlier a comment was posted by a player by the name Baked as Bread and he said that being a bandit, ruins the game and doesn't make player interaction interesting, well let me tell you a thing to all those Care Bears out there, fellow Bandits, heroes, survivors and players just starting out.
Would you rather be Killed on sight, or robbed.

would you rather have your killer be silent and kill you as soon as he lays eyes on you, or have him be a bit more talkative,

would you rather have an interesting story to tell your friends about a bandit who robbed you in the road, or how he tortured you and let you escape or how he executed you, or would you rather this guy shot you on sight.

I (personally) think not, you see bandits give players more than just some shambling corpse to worry about, I mean, I would rather not get robbed, but if it happens, and I just get robbed, and not get kosed, I have no problem, and I now have a cool story tell. I would much rather have my character be tortured or have a sick game played with him, then be shot on sight, it makes my experience in this game, much more interesting.

Now I guess you can argue that they killed you in the end, well if they shot first and didn't say jack, that's not a bandit now is it, that's a lazy d0uche goblin who treats this game like a sh1tty online shooter, I.E someone who kills on sight. Now maybe he had his reasons to KOS, maybe he was in a tense situation and would rather be safe than sorry, true, that is a possibility, but I doubt that it happens so frequently that this person has to gun down fresh spawns, who he sees walking down the street, or to one that says "Hello" to him and runs off down the road.

Now without bandits, this game would just be some boring @$$ repetitive game. Now I want you to imagine DayZ without bandits, or without PvP rather. Imagine the daily routine when you get in a server, imagine the only players you can run into. Think of how many players would probably stop playing this game. If you're a Care Bear you'll think everyone will still play, if you're delusional you'll think not all that many, if you're neither of those you'll realize a lot of players will just disappear, leaving this game a empty repetitive husk.

Bandits and Heroes interactions are generally fire fights when they can tell who is who and what they stand for, which gives me a f.u.c.king proper gun fight, not just some d0uche who came out of the woods and shot you in the head for just being there. If a hero sees me robbing a man, he is gonna shoot me in the damn face, which is all fair game if you ask me, he's trying to save that guy there. And you know what that robbed player will have, a cool ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ experience, he ws in the middle of getting robbed and bam some freakin hero comes out no where and saves his ass. Or maybe some other bandit shot me and is now robbing him, or maybe that ♥♥♥♥ is a player who kills on sight and kills both of us, that last ones a good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ story isn't it.

The point of this rant being that there is absolutely no right way to play a game like this, the only wrong way is to play this game like its Call of f.u.c.king duty by killing on sight (In certain situations it is acceptable).

Now to bother the care bears enjoy some pictures of people I have handcuffed, or shot because they ignored my warnings.

Just got this game. The technical stuff might be outdated, but the psychosis, banditry etc. was a good read. Call me a 'dipstick' I guess..

Nostalgia, reminds me when dayz on old engine was actually fun

also if someone cares regenerate system is --> Blood, Health, Bone/Spinal Reconstruction (using a splint or morphine forces it back to a certain amount but doesnt fill it right back up to the top)

the only nitpick i have with this guide is your definition on healthy. Its impossible to be healthy on DayZ without being at 5000 Blood and 5000 HP. Healthy means you are at all full health, right now the game is bugged so when you spawn in fresh it doesnt show you right away. Also you can regenerate and get to healthy with being only dark green energized (but this is a very SLOW process).

Excellent guide. I look forward to the updates.

I really love this guide, i suggest possibly adding some video clips on the "Psychosis" section from DanielFromSL, He's got videos in DayZ where he's a psychopath, and he clearly does a good job at it.

I also suggest possibly doing something about cannibalism, perhaps feeding someoen their friend.

I'd like to thank all the guys who made this guide. I recently got DayZ and thought "I want to be the good guy." But my experience was quickly tainted by douchebags who kos. And I realize now that being the "bad guy" is what enriches the experience. I recently developed a habit of avoiding players altogether due to KOS, but now I'm going to start looking at things differently. So another big thanks to all of you.

Jesus this guide is amazing! My friends and I are going to play some party games with some "victims".
