Alwent South (Custom Oil Rig Base)

Description
ALWENT SOUTH - CUSTOM PLAYER OIL RIG BASE

"Everything was going great until the company allowed those damn YouTube content creators to record themselves visiting. They were a jinx!
As soon as they arrived those two full grown men began capering like a pair of attention starved children and before we could even get them off their ship and start the tour we were hit by no less than three massive tsunamis, two tornadoes, a meteor strike and to top it all off - three giant prehistoric sharks suddenly appeared out of nowhere and sank their ship, killing them both!

It wasn't safe anymore! I had no choice but to call the Stormworks Rescue Service and evacuate the rig.

It just all went South!!"

-- Jim Collins, OIM, Alwent South

Cost: $627,970
Mass: 8260

DESCRIPTION
A fully functional bare bones rig base with oil drilling, storage and refining capability, very loosely based on the kind of layout you'd likely find on a real semi-submersible drilling rig (Well... If the rig ran on a shoe-string budget, failed all it's safety inspections and half of the topside modules were missing that is), plus this creation is both performance friendly and has plenty of room for additional player customisation.

I made this as I found there to be a distinct shortage of good oil rig player bases available on the Steam Workshop, so I eventually bit the bullet and made one myself based on what I'd seen and learned over the last 5 years, the end result was this little gem - which I even started using as one of the three main bases in my most recent classic career playthrough.

In fact I enjoyed using it so much I thought I'd share it with the rest of the Stormworks community!

To spawn this, just use the workbench/architect's table located at the custom player rig base. Be advised that as with all the player purchasable islands, it's location is random with each world seed.

New!!
You can now grab the Lite version HERE which runs almost twice as fast and is ideal for multiplayer gaming, people playing on slower PC's, or those that just cant resist bringing their super massive oil tankers to the rig.

FEATURES
  • An Oil Drilling and Refinery system that is based on the preset one by Geometa and the Stormworks Devs, except with a few improvements and changes to make it a little more suitable for offshore use.
  • 1 x 200,000l capacity oil storage tank and 2 x 100,000l capacity fuel storage tanks for diesel and jet fuel - all of which can be unloaded onto nearby vessels.
  • 2 x 10,000l capacity fuel tanks that can be topped up from the larger fuel tanks when required.
  • The winches for offloading the oil, diesel and jet fuel have both hose connectors and the older style fluid connectors, which means they can even be used with some of the older creations on the Steam Workshop.
  • A two sided drilling rod rack next to the derrick that can be rotated to present a fresh set of drilling rods, while taking up only half the floor space.
  • A fully stocked accommodation module, complete with living quarters, offices, workshop, medical room and canteen.
  • A large helipad for use with most rotary craft available on the workshop.
  • A huge crane that's ideal for loading and unloading ISO containers such as oil or fuel tanks, fresh drilling fluid and more drilling rods for those unlucky enough to have the custom rig base spawn in an exceptionally deep part of the ocean.
  • A launch RHIB with it's own davit that can be used for any nearby rescue missions or to just ferry personnel to and from the rig.
  • Two LB600 free-fall lifeboats that can be fully retrieved and refuelled after launch.
  • A locked pyrotechnics cabinet that contains a flare gun, speargun, glowsticks 'etc' that can be unlocked using a code (the code can be found very easily just by exploring the living quarters).
  • Very well lit during the night and there's even an option to turn on flood lights for when drilling at night time or when the weather gets bad after sunset.
  • Very performance friendly. I've tried to keep everything more or less on one deck with a small gantry underneath for inspecting/repairing the wellhead, so even my potato of a computer can run this smoothly - even with a fairly large oil tanker bobbing up and down nearby.
  • A Keep Active Block inside the office coffee machine keeps the rig loaded in memory and refining oil even when the player is away on a mission. This can be removed via the workbench if you so desire.
  • A couple of hidden Easter eggs for anyone clever enough to spot them.

KNOWN ISSUES
  • Low and Auto physics settings can make the winch cables jump up and down (or a ham-fisted approach to using the drill rod connector and winches) can sometimes result in the Wellhead being damaged.
This isn't something that I can fix on my side and the players will just need to be more careful. There's diving gear and plenty of underwater welding tools to fix things if this ever happens.
  • Stormworks can be glitchy at the best of times and sometimes the robotic pivots do weird things such as pop out of place, go limp or even fail to rotate fully when there's a lot of them rendered in nearby.
Again this isn't something that I can fix on my side but you just need to be aware of it in case it happens - be advised that sometimes moving your own creations away, reloading the save or restarting the game can fix this.
  • Static creations such as structures and custom bases all have infinite power at the moment, so to save on system resources, those two large CAT generators are only made of normal blocks and are purely for decoration right now - if that ever changes in a future patch/update then I can easily replace them with ones that actually work.

Feel free to edit this creation for your own use and enjoyment, you can even upload your own version onto the Steam Workshop if you so choose to do so, as despite what other content creators may claim - we most certainly can't tell you not to... at least not legally.

All I would ask is that if you do plan on editing and re-uploading this, either on the Steam Workshop or elsewhere, is that you give credit both to myself and if possible add a link to this creation so that people can see everyone else that's contributed to it. Again, neither I nor anyone else can force you to do this, but it is considered common decency and good etiquette.

Remember if you like this creation then please consider giving it a thumbs up.

I've just tested this out with the latest version of Stormworks and everything works exactly as intended, I struck oil, was able to refine it into diesel and jet fuel and pump it into another vehicle with no issues at all.

Once again, If you're having difficulty getting the Alwent South to work correctly, please watch the YouTube tutorial video, read the guides and if that still doesn't work then check out the "Common Mistakes" discussion above.

Sadly, almost every single complaint I've received in this comments section so far has been the result of the person that's posted it being careless, not following the correct procedure, making silly mistakes on their side or in some rare instances has even been caused by a known glitch or bug with the game itself and not with this creation, so please use your common sense and investigate any issues thoroughly for yourself before posting them here.

That's a new one and actually very clever as I have no idea how you managed to do that. It should only drill down as far as the top of the drilling mechanism can push it - and since it can't physically go down any further than the connector without stopping then what you've just described should be virtually impossible.

I'm going to chalk it up to a random glitch with the Stormworks game physics again and sadly unless you've saved your world shortly before it happened then you'll need to start again from scratch.

Is there a way to bring a rod up like 1/2 meter. While drilling, the rod went down slightly below the connection point and I can't get another rod to connect. I am 143 meters in depth, and my bore hole is 35 meters.

That's the Alwent South updated once again, this time with a slew of fixes that helps improve the flow rates even more.
The biggest culprits were those new liquid relief valves that replaced the now deprecated fluid filters, it turns out that they actually reduce the flow rate quite significantly and that needed to be taken into account during the rework of the fluid system.
Captain Robertson  [author] Mar 14 @ 6:30am
That's an update released where the flow rates have been increased - almost doubled in some instances, depending on the temperature, pressure 'etc'.

I've also experimented with Kettle's findings and added some more weights to the drill rod connector, which helps prevent it from going limp as much when running at lower physics settings or whenever there's another creation nearby that's got a lot of pivots and/or physics objects attached.
The pivot bug can still occur, it's just not very likely unless you really push the limits of the old Stormworks game engine by bringing some really complex creations into the same area as the Alwent South.

Enjoy!

yes i was able to fix the issue by adding weight blocks to the sliding side and that did the trick, wacky physics ftw

@Callsign_Kettle - See the known issues above and from previous posts - that's just the infamous Stormworks limp pivot bug rearing it's ugly head again, adding more to try and reinforce it will just make it worse.

If you're experiencing it, then it most likely means there's another creation nearby that's got a lot of physics objects, pivots and moving parts. If you move it out of render distance (providing it doesn't have a keep active block) then that should fix it.

Thankfully a lot of the creations I use in my own playthrough are quite well optimised so it's almost never an issue, even when I've got a tanker and a tilt-rotor VTOL nearby.

you might want to reinforce the magnet rod holder, it seems to not be strong enough to hold up the rod up high enough to connect it. pm me if you need more context @Captain Robertson

@BeanieBoy22 - Not recently and I rarely keep a record of the seeds I use when testing.

Try asking around in the general Stormworks forums, as there might be someone there already playing that's struck it lucky.

Do you have a seed for where the oil is right under the surface?
