Bell 207 Sioux Scout Attack Helicopter

Description
The smoothest flying helicopter in the smallest possible package!

Welcome to the Bell 207 "Sioux Scout". Modeled off the real thing, the 207 was the first real-world proof-of-concept helicopter gunship. Designed as a testbed, it was small, fast, and nimble. And just like the original 207, this was based on the earlier Bell 47 frame (see my workshop for the Bell 47-G).

This craft is a capable 1 or 2-person vehicle, with the rear seat dedicated to the pilot and the front seat the gunner. Weapons fire control is available from both seats however, allowing solo operation as needed.

Weapons include 6 hardpoints (split into 3 groups of 2, with staggered single fire for each group) and a twin machine-gun nose turret.

Flight Modes
The 207 comes with 2 different flight modes.

The first is the standard Stormworks Helicopter mode, with gyro-stabilized pitch-forward flight movement. This gives a stable low-speed mode for maneuvering or precision targetting.

The second is the high-speed flight mode. Taking lessons from my earlier Cobra attack helicopter, this is designed for rapid horizontal flight. She clocks in at 60m/s (115 knots/hour) whilst maintaining a level profile. Not only that but two different stabilization systems were built in to ensure this is incredibly fun to fly. She's fully capable of straight vertical climbs, rolls, loops, split-s', hammerheads, immelman turns, etc. From the moment you make a rapid 180 sliding turn you'll be hooked.

A huge amount of effort and research also went into ensuring this helicopter doesn't jerk, pitch, lock up, or spin like most stormworks helicopters do.

Transitioning between the modes is as simple as pressing the "1" key to toggle between them.

Preflight Checklist
  • Open canopy
  • Sit in rear seat (the Pilot's seat)
  • Close canopy
  • Flip the "Start Engine" switch to the left
  • Allow blades to get up to speed (about 10 seconds)

WASD control your pitch and yaw while the Arrow keys control roll and collective. Press "1" to enter "Supercruise" mode (high speed flight).

In helicopter mode, hold W and Up simultaneously to fly forward. In Supercruise, no control inputs are needed (forward motion is automatically applied).

NOTE!: When transitioning from helicopter to Supercruise, press the "S" key to pitch up first. Otherwise the helicopter may go into a dive.

Supercruise does have a separate "fuel" supply (electricity), and an auto cutoff when it runs out (you have a good long time before it does though and a warning light). It will recharge slowly.

Final Thoughts
This helicopter was designed to see just how much could be packed into a tiny airframe, and it took a lot. Every spare cube of space has been used - from the multiple tiny fuel tanks to the dizzying array of microcontrollers. Though it certainly has an engine that can take more weight, there really isn't any space to add armour blocks to it anywhere. As such this is definitely a glass cannon - use your speed and don't get hit because it can't take it.

At first the rear of the fuselage may look a little odd with the gaps, but the real one has the same. They're the engine cowling, and in this case it gave me a way to install a turbofan inside it to create the unique and realistic flight capabilities. I actually started the build after seeing a picture of the cowling and realised just how perfect it would be

I've also deliberately kept HUDs out of this design for two reasons. First, this is a craft from the 60's when HUDs really weren't a thing, and second this was designed primarily as a technology test. That said, there's nothing stopping you replacing the compass with a small Heads Up Display and adding some radar or information capabilities to this really easily. There's a trio of slope blocks behind the fan which can be removed to put a microcontroller for a HUD

Lastly, the rockets are also not the highest-quality and I can't guarantee accurate hits with them. Feel free to replace with whatever armaments you want :)
