How to play Legends of Dota

This guide will tell you how to play Legends of Dota via the steam workshop. The same basic idea will apply for when you want to play any custom gamemode.

System Requirements

• Any modern version of Windows (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Direct3D 11 compatible GPU

If you're not running windows, you can not use the alpha version of the workshop tools. You will need to wait for them to port it to your OS.

To check your directX version, and if your PC is x64, open "dxdiag" (you can type this into your start menu, or use start --> run, or press windows + R, and enter "dxdiag")

In the first tab, it will tell you your DirectX Version, as well as if your PC is 64-bit, or 32-bit


Note: The workshop tools have since been updated to support both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of windows, so either should work now :) It's also possible other versions of directX are supported.

If you don't meet both of these requirements, you're hot out of luck, you can still try to install the tools, but they likely wont run.

If you're from the future, get off your flying scooter because they might have ported the tools by now :P

Installing Dota 2 Workshop Tools

1) Navigate to your steam library
2) Select the tools tab
3) Find the "Dota 2 Workshop Tools Alpha" and install it


This will install the workshop tools alpha, it is roughly 6GB

If this doesn't work, here is an alternate set of steps:

• In your Steam Settings under Account you must opt into Steam Beta Update participation.
  
• Right-click on Dota 2 in Steam and select View Downloadable Content.
  
• Check the box in the Install column next to Dota 2 Workshop Tools DLC.
  
• Click Close. The required content will begin downloading.
  
• In Steam, go to the Library menu and click on Tools and install the Dota 2 Workshop Tools Alpha.

Installing Legends of Dota

1) Navigate to the Legends of Dota workshop page
2) Hit the subscribe button


This will subscribe you to legends of dota. You can also subscribe to any other custom game modes you wish to play. You can find other custom game modes here

Creating a lobby

0) Launch Regular dota like your normally would
1) Navigate to the play tab
2) Select the Custom Games tab from the left
3) Browse by "Subscribed Game Modes"
4) Click on Legends of Dota


5) Select "CREATE LOBBY"


6) Select "Create"


7) Fill in the lobby settings, and select "Create Lobby"


A) If you see no custom maps, this was because I had an incorrect addon_info.txt file. If you restart your dota, the addon should update and this issue should be solved.

8) Wait for friends, or hit "Start Game" to being!

Joining Friend's Games

• Click the Play tab and then Custom Games
  
• Friend's lobbies will be displayed here by default if they are not, ensure Browse By is set to Friend Lobbies
  
• Click Join when a lobby is available.
  
• A Subscribe dialog will come up and will then download the addon
  
• Once the download is complete, click Join again
  
• Assign yourself to a team and wait for the host to start the game

Debugging / Issues

No Custom Games Tab?

• Ensure you installed the workshop tools and they downloaded.
  
• Try launching the workshop tools
  
• Load up one of the custom game modes that ships with the tools

I don't see any maps?

• If you've added -override_vpk to your launch params, try removing it.

How do I play in fullscreen?

• Launch a mod like you normally would (or launch the dev tools), then navigate to the options menu, and set the resolution to your screen's native resolution

Possible fix if you're failing to load

• FOR HOSTS:
  
• Goto "Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota_ugc\game\dota\cfg"
  
• Open game_convars.vcfg
  
• Add the convar: "dota_wait_for_players_to_load_timeout" "2000"
  
• 
  
• FOR CLIENTS:
  
• If you game doesn't load within two minutes, close dota, reopen it, then connect to the lobby
  
• Once the game has launched, if you are taken to the main menu, instead of directly into the game, you need to close dota and reconnect
  
• If the host has the config set correctly, it will give you 30 minutes to connect, instead of 1 minute

Playing on a MAC / Without workshop tools

• Legends of Dota is a rare mod in that it will work WITHOUT the workshop tools, this means even mac users can play :)
  
• DO THIS ONCE, REPEAT WHEN YOU NEED TO UPDATE
  
• Download THIS ZIP[github.com]
  
• Extract ONLY the "lod" folder into your "dota 2 beta/dota/addons folder" (creating addons if it doesn't exist)
  
• If there are any other folders inside your "addons" folder, please either delete them, or move them into another folder (such as "addons_disabled")
  
• DO THIS ONCE
  
• Open "dota 2 beta/dota/gameinfo.txt"
  
• Add "Game |gameinfo_path|addons/lod" without quotes on a new line BELOW the final "Game" entry (inside of SearchPaths) Click here if you don't know how to follow instructions[pastebin.com]
  
• DO THIS EACH TIME YOU WANT TO CONNECT
  
• Launch NORMAL dota 2 (no workshop tools!)
  
• Open your console and type the following commands
  
• Type "connect lod.ash47.net:27016"
  
• ADDITONAL NOTES
  
• Note: There are only 10 slots, so there is a good chance they might be taken, especially since bots will auto fill any slots that aren't taken when the game starts
  
• If all the slots are taken, you will become a spectator
  
• Server capacity may improve in the future, if you want to start your OWN server, you can find a ROUGH guide here, I will NOT be accepting questions, if you can't follow it, you shouldn't be running a server in the first place: HERE[github.com]
