Introduction

7 Days to Die is known for having pretty terrible optimization, and even the beefiest of computers have trouble running this unity engine game,i made this guide because i didn't see the things i am gonna say listed anywhere else or not enough people talk about them, but they genuinely helped me get more frames until i got to upgrade my pc, now, this problem will hopefully be fixed in future alpha releases, but you aren't here because you want to patiently wait until that happens.
What to do
1. Lowering your resolution
I'm not gonna try and look smart and tell you how resolution works in games, so just take my word for it and try it out for yourself, the game will load faster and run better, at the cost of the game window being a little smaller, depending on how much you change the resolution
2. Lowering your graphics settings
Yes, yes, i know, mr obvious here, but you should do what i say here,
(All of this is in game)
Go to your Options --> Video -- > Dynamic Mesh Options and put everything on its lowest setting
The quality settings are up to you but i recommend putting everything that has a medium to high performance impacton its lowest
3. In-game console commands : (This alone can give you a 10+ fps boost)
Now for this one you have to be INSIDE your world and NOT in the menu for it to work (F1 to open the console in-game).
The commands are as follows :

gfx pp enable 0 (This disables post-processing)
gfx af enable 0 (This disables anisotropic filtering)
gfx dt enable 0 (This disables distant terrain for better fps outdoors)
Conclusion
If you did everything mentionned here you should be getting way more frames than you had beforehand.
I hope this guide helped you in exploring the wasteland in a smoother way, and have fun killing zombies !

I found I get many more FPS after installing a 4090. Would definitely recommend you try it out!

You got 2 options
#1 you lower your mesh distance in the dynamic mesh options so that nearby buildings don't render until you get close to them
#2 you download a mod that gives you that fps boost in cities
here's the link : https://www.nexusmods.com/7daystodie/mods/2397
instructions to install that mod are in the description of the page but if you don't know how to do that, feel free to ask

I only have problems with fps when I'm in a big city. Any ideas on how to fix this?
