Description
Play as the madly pious monarch, Maria I; in Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

The State of Brazil was always a Portuguese colony as dictated by the Treaty of Tordesillas and this symbiotic relationship was rarely disrupted. However, Napoleon and his desire for continental control would lead the French to establishing a client state in Portugal. Maria I would rally a court of many thousands of family members and court associates to flee the French. The Portuguese court would land in Salvador in 1808 AD, they would become entrenched in the free lifestyle of Rio de Janeiro, away from the machinations of court intrigue expected of European parliaments. In 1815 AD, Brazil was elevated to a Kingdom of equal status with Portugal and the titular title of the Algarves. Over a decade later liberalism would take root in Porto, forcing the monarch to return. Portuguese liberals plotted to lower the status of Brazil once more, so the regent Prince Pedro would defy the overseas cortes to establish an independent Brazilian Empire. Portugal and Brazil would be one dynasty but two separate countries going forward, until republican upstarts took the reigns a century later.
