Diesel Locomotive 2TE121

The 2TE121 is an infamous Soviet diesel locomotive that was ahead of its time. It was created in response to an order from the USSR Railway Ministry, which required a new generation diesel locomotive with 4000 hp. Series production of the machine was approved at VZOR in 1984. Despite excellent solutions in design and ease of operation, noted by the machinists, in conditions of crisis and tight deadlines the machines often had defects and problems with separate assemblies. In addition, the locomotive lacked suitable tracks and quality service at the depot. The completed model was produced until 1992, when the Russian MPS stopped purchasing locomotives manufactured in other countries (VZOR was located in Ukraine). Only 78 locomotives were produced, operating at the Donetsk, Northern and Oktyabrskaya railways. As a result of the crisis of the 1990s, as well as problems with maintenance of the 2TE121, the vast majority of locomotives were written off already in the 1990s, and the rare lucky ones - in the 2000s.

• 2TE121 (1978-1985) - 2TE121 has been under development since the early 1970s. The prototype was presented in 1978. The first machine of the series differs from its successors in the shape of the cabin, lanterns, location of windows, shape of the roof, location of ventilation, etc. Externally the car is very reminiscent of the prototype diesel locomotive 2TE116A. After decommissioning, for a long time it served as a simulator in one of the railway vocational schools.
