About
This is a work in progress.
Feel free to bookmark or favorite this "guide" if you want to see additions to the list in the future. I'll be trying custom maps and if they both work and are fun, I'll add them here with some screenshots.
"Workshop?"
Workshop is now a thing for HL2VR, which is exciting. Some might want to see these maps ported there so they can simply subscribe instead of installing the files manually as the guide explains.

However, the developers are very clear in saying they don't want anyone to upload content they don't have the rights to. And I don't have the rights to these maps. So I'm not going to post them on Workshop unless that stance changes in some way (or the community as a whole takes a different stance on it themselves, as have happened on other games with workshop support in the past).
Resident Evil 2 Source
A port of the RE2 campaign (Leon A) to the Source engine, replacing enemies and weapons with fitting HL2 alternatives (zombies for... zombies, antlions for lickers, fast zombies for dogs, etc).

The campaign works quite well in terms of mechanics and gameplay flow. Interacting with the environment and fighting enemies works like you'd expect. Conserve ammo, seek out health when you need it, and take down the undead before they take too many bites out of you.

  • Suit pickup is either well hidden or nonexistent. Consider either cheating it in ("give item_suit" in console) or starting directly on map 2 (spawn at RPD with suit, crowbar, and pistol).
  • Save games seem broken, disabling enemy AI when loaded. Consider simply loading the last map you made it to previously and going from there. (It's not long, you can beat all four maps in one sitting if you want.)
  • Sometimes you can pick up guns/ammo through walls, or they clip out of their container due to physics bugs.
  • Ladders can be problematic in immersive mode, some don't dismount you properly. Consider turning off immersive ladder climbing. (Also if you manage to climb that one ladder in the lab immersively - you know the one - then you deserve a medal.)

Too Many Crates
The VR mod requires you to swing your crowbar manually. So naturally, a good map is one that makes you swing it several thousand times, right?

This isn't just monotonous crowbar swings (though that's a big part of it) - it's also a puzzle, and a test of your patience and perseverance. Do you have what it takes to destroy all 1000 crates?

Nightmare Church
A well-known map in the GMod community, spooky-themed and chock full of details to explore.

Worth noting that this one has some pretty blunt and rather LOUD jumpscares in some spots, so if you're not down for that, best to try something else.
