Hey everyone,

this month, we have prepared a new update for you with a number of new features and bug fixes that we hope you'll enjoy!

Physical hands
Your hands now collide with the environment and will no longer pass through walls. You can also tip over bottles and other objects. A short controller rumble will indicate when your hands make contact with something.

Please note: due to technical and gameplay reasons, the hands do not inflict damage on objects directly, and they do not collide with NPCs or enemies.

This feature can be disabled in the gameplay options if you prefer the hands the way they were before.

ProTubeVR support
Do yo own a ProVolver or ForceTube device from ProTubeVR? Then this update enables native support for them - enjoy your guns' recoil on a new level!

dxvk update and stutter fixes
HL2VR uses dxvk to translate the old D3D9 API (which is not supported by VR runtimes) to Vulkan. We have updated our version of dxvk to 1.10.3. In the process, we also discovered that the async patch we applied to avoid dreaded pipeline compilation stutters was too conservative in its decision when pipelines could be compiled in the background. As a consequence, it could still happen that the game's rendering would occasionally freeze for a short moment while waiting for graphics pipelines to be ready.
This wasn't really an issue on NVIDIA cards, but it did affect AMD cards more often. We have adjusted async compilation to be used more aggressively, and these situations should no longer occur.

So, if you've had issues with the game's rendering occiasionally stuttering or freezing during normal gameplay that didn't coincide with a level transition and could be observed in e.g. fpsVR as spikes in the CPU time, this update should hopefully resolve the issue.

Miscellaneous

Fixed the SMG firing animation sometimes playing when in the weapon selection menu
Added controller rumble effects when ejecting a magazine, grabbing a mag from the sholder, inserting a mag or grabbing a weapon with your second hand

Nominate Half-Life 2 VR for the Steam Awards!

Hey everyone,

looks like this year, Valve is allowing mods to be nominated for the Steam awards! Or more likely they made a mistake and will remove them again ...

But on the off-chance it's not a mistake and you think our efforts might deserve the title, please consider nominating Half-Life 2 VR for the Steam Awards. It would mean the world to us! :)

As Half-Life 2 VR released last year, it is only eligible for the "Labor of Love" category, but we do feel it qualifies - a lot of people poured their hearts and souls into this project over more than ten years.
Our lead dev cabalistic gave a talk on the Making Of Half-Life 2 VR that you may be interested in if you wish to learn more about the project's history and how we made it work:

Meanwhile, the episodes did release this year, so feel free to nominate Half-Life 2 VR: Episode Two for "VR Game of the Year" as a representative for the HL2VR franchise!

Added a preliminary sight for the AR2.
Changed default controller bindings to use triggers for vehicle throttle. This will not affect you if you are using custom bindings. The old vehicle controls are still available as alternative bindings.
HUD hints for the airboat reflect the active vehicle controls.
Movement HUD hints reflect your settings for locomotion or teleport.
Potential fix for crashes with AMD cards when MSAA is enabled.

Enemies killed by the crossbow will no longer turn into serverside ragdolls, restoring the ability to pin them to walls

Hello everyone,

today's update is in part a preparation for tomorrow's release of Episode 2, but also contains a number of bugfixes and new features that we hope you will appreciate :)

2D cinema mode for vehicles

If the teleporting camera mode is still too nauseating or disorienting for you, we have added one more comfort mode for the vehicle rides: in the 2D cinema mode, the game will switch from VR rendering to presenting the vehicle rides on a virtual 2D screen in front of you, offering an experience close to the flat game. You will switch back to VR as soon as you leave the vehicle. The mode is available in the comfort options.

Alternative accelerate/brake bindings for vehicles

You can now optionally bind separate inputs for acceleration and braking for vehicles in the SteamVR controller bindings. If these optional inputs are bound, your movement joystick will no longer control the vehicle's throttle and only be used for turning. We are providing optional input bindings where accelerate and brake are bound to the triggers; you can switch to these bindings by going to the SteamVR controller bindings menu and selecting another layout. It will be listed under the "official bindings" section. You can, of course, also come up with your own bindings if you prefer. The default bindings are unchanged.

Miscellaneous fixes

Fix player held objects not properly following the player during teleport movement
Shotgun reload shell count is now configurable via ConVar hlvr_shotgun_reload_shell_count
Recoil penalties for handling weapons with one hand can now be disabled via ConVar hlvr_weapons_one_hand_reduced_recoil
When reloading the SMG, the new magazine will now be accepted in a wider radius around the reload point

Movement speed

If a reduced movement speed is configured, activating sprint now ensures that you move at least at your max walking speed even if you do not currently have the ability to sprint. This ensures the player can always move as fast as the game expects.

Small update for vehicle camera modes

Improved smoothness of smooth turning in first person decoupled mode vehicle camera.
Fixed 3rd person vehicle camera height not always being consistent when entering a vehicle.
You can now turn the camera in the teleporting vehicle camera mode; the camera orientation will no longer automatically reorient to the vehicle.
When driving towards the camera in the teleporting camera mode, it will now teleport farther apart from the vehicle so that you can see better where you are driving.
