Research for Cheaper Expendable Units

Description
Certain factions can make their expendable or chaff units have cheaper upkeep thanks to research/technologies.


Mod

The following factions can make their expendable units cheaper over the course of the campaign through certain research or tech bonuses. These bonuses are added to existing nodes on the tech tree for maximum compatibility and are, to the maximum extent possible, added where it matches flavor text of the research. Typically the last upkeep reduction bonus is at or near the very end of the faction's tech tree.

  • Bretonnia: Affects Peasant Mobs, Peasant Archers (all varieties), and Men-at-Arms (all non-mounted varieties). Five nodes have been upgraded to include -15% upkeep, for a total reduction of 75%.
  • Cathay: Affects Peasant Spearmen and Peasant Archers. Five nodes have been upgraded to include -15% upkeep, for a total reduction of 75%.
  • Greenskins: Affects Goblin Spears, Goblin Archers, and Nasty Skulkers (does not include Night Goblins or any mounted goblin units). Four nodes have been upgraded to include -10% upkeep, for a total reduction of 40%.
  • Ogres: Affects Gnoblars and Gnoblar Trappers. Five nodes have been upgraded to include -10% upkeep, for a total reduction of 50%.
  • Skaven: Affects all Skavenslave varities. Five nodes have been upgraded to include -15% upkeep, for a total reduction of 75%.
  • Vampire Coast: Affects Zombie Deckhands and Zombie Deckhands (Polearms) (does not include ranged varieties of Deckhands). Three nodes have been upgraded to include -10% upkeep, for a total reduction of 30%.
  • Vampire Counts: Affects Zombies, Skeleton Spears, and Skeleton Warriors. Five nodes have been upgraded to include -15% upkeep, for a total reduction of 75%.

Balance

This is not balanced. This will make things easier. If you don't like this, the mod is easy to modify in RFPM, as I've separated the faction's tech bonuses. Simply delete the table concerning the faction you don't want to include, or increase it's reduction to your liking.

Not all factions reach the same bonus in reduction. Typically this is because there was tech already existing which reduces the upkeep of the affected units, such as with Greenskin goblins and Vampire Coast deckhands.

I've tried to focus on units that are melee-oriented, have the actual 'Expendable' unit trait, and are recruitable from a faction's basic settlement building. This was a starting point, and certain factions have exceptions to any of these rules. For example, I enjoyed free zombies and skeletons, so this mod effectively gets you much closer to that than vanilla W3.

The AI will benefit from these technologies as well, but since the AI already gets bonuses to income and upkeep these will be largely moot, and will have little to no impact.

Compatibility

This mod is highly compatible. It only adds additional bonuses to existing research nodes on certain faction's tech trees. It will be compatible, and be update-proof, so long as another mod or CA changes the layout or structure of a faction's tech tree. If they do that, it is highly likely to not be compatible.

All the factions other than Bretonnia, Greenskins, and Vampire Counts use vanilla Unit Sets, so this mod's upkeep reduction will apply to the units of other mods if they took the time to add them to the right unit set. For example, if a mod added a Cathayan Peasant Swordsman and added it to the vanilla Cathayan Peasant Unit Set, it will enjoy the upkeep reductions of this mod. If they haven't, a conflict will not exist, but the unit won't be affected by this mod. Unfortunately, I had to make new Unit Sets to cover the just the specific desired units for Bretonnia, Greenskins, and Vampire Counts. Hence why other mods will not benefit from this mod.

This mod is save game compatible. It may be safely added or removed any time.
