How To Make A Fire In DayZ

Step by step guide, multiple ways to make a fire!

Collect Short Sticks!

First we need to collect some sticks, we’ll need to find a bush that looks like this one, walk up to the bush until you see a prompt to gather or cut the sticks, press and hold your left mouse button until the character stops collecting, collecting sticks using your bare hands can lead to minor cuts, it’s better if you can use a knife or axe!

If you are stuck!
If you have any items in your characters hands that are not either a hatchet, axe or a knife in good enough condition, you’ll need to take the items out of your hands to collect the sticks, press Tab to open the inventory menu and drag the item out of the “Hand” slot, press Tab again to close the inventory menu and try again, if that doesn’t work try another bush

Press Tab to open the inventory. Check in the “Vicinity” slot to make sure your sticks are not dropped on the ground, drag the big stick into your characters hand slot. Press Tab again to close the inventory. In the bottom left corner of the screen you should now see a prompt to “split” press and hold your left mouse button until the action is finished, now you will have a short stick!

Kindling!

There are several items you can use as kindling, you will only need one of these to craft the fireplace. If you don’t have a knife you can get by using rags, bandages or paper. If you have a knife you can hold the knife in your hand and collect bark by going up to a large tree until you see a prompt to “collect bark” then press and hold your left mouse button until the action is finished. The bark should be in “vicinity”.

You can cut most clothing into rags using a knife, drag the clothing into your hand slot, and drag the knife into the “combine” slot inside the hands slot. Press and hold the left mouse button to cut the clothes into rags

Lighting The Fire!

If you don’t have a lighter, matches or a flare you’ll need to craft a hand drill kit.

To make a hand drill kit you will need a knife to collect bark like we did in the Kindling section of this guide.Now that you have bark, combine it with a short stick, cycle through the craftable options with the mouse scroll wheel until you see “craft hand drill kit” and craft one!


Hold whatever you’re using to light the fire in your hand, go close to the fireplace and once you see the prompt, press and hold your left mouse button to light the fire!

If you’re stuck!
If you’re using matches or a lighter to light the fire make sure the matches are not wet and make sure the lighter has enough lighter fluid inside. If the item says “ruined” it won’t work

How To Stock The Fire

You can use multiple long or short sticks or firewood!

To collect firewood first you will need an axe or hatchet, hold the axe in your hand, find a decently sized tree, go up to the tree until you see a prompt to chop the tree, press and hold the left mouse button until the tree is chopped down, pick up the firewood from the vicinity.


To stock the fire, Stand close to the fireplace, open the inventory, in the vicinity you should see the fireplace, if there isn’t already a drop down menu of the fireplace you can click the arrow on the fireplace to open or close it, drag the firewood into the firewood slot, or the sticks into the sticks slot!

How To Put A Fire In The Oven

You can only do this if the fireplace has not been lit yet, pick up the fireplace and stand looking at the oven until you see a prompt to put the fireplace into the oven, click your left mouse button and now the fire should be in the oven instead, you can stock the oven the same way you would do with a regular fireplace!
