Background

The Matador is the first modern Spanish battleship as a response to Russian Kirov Class nuclear battlecruisers and the first on NATO forces to sustain the battleship doctrine but with modernized aspects. The project started in October 12th, 1985; construction started in January 1st, 1990 and was laid down in June 16th, 1995. The flag ceremony was performed by the King Juan Carlos I and her daughter Infanta Elena. It was commissioned in September 15th, 1997. It holds the position of being the Spanish capitalship and permanent leadership of NATO Strike Group 41.

It holds the name of "El Matador Del Mar" (The Sea Killer) in allusion to bullfighters (Matadores) as they fight the strongest beasts and show them who dominates the fight.





Armament

The Matador hold the biggest weapon selection seen among all combat vessels, with more than 20 thousand rounds for different weapon systems.

  • 6x Meroka 35mm anti-air artillery
  • 6x Mk.45 Mod.2 127mm all-purpose deck gun (not functional)
  • 4x SCALP Naval cruise missile launchers (not functional)
  • 3x ASROC anti-submarine rocket launcher
  • 60x Mk.41 VLS cells (not functional)
  • 4x SCALP Naval cruise missile launchers (not functional)
  • 1x Mk.29 ESSM launcher (not functional)

How to use

In order to use this masterpiece, there is an access hatch below the third Meroka turret (rear turret) and access to the control room. Systems and turbines must be turned on for the ship to be used correctly. Weapons instrument panels must be activated accordingly for each weapon to properly function.
