- an attack on the Republic of Poland by Nazi Germany which marked the beginning of World War II. The German invasion began on 1 September 1939 from the north, south, and west. The campaign ended on 6 October with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of Poland under the terms of the German–Soviet Frontier Treaty.

- a prolonged military blockade undertaken by the Axis powers against the Soviet city of Leningrad. The siege began on 8 September 1941, although Soviet forces managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the Red Army did not lift the siege until 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. The blockade became one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history.

- a major battle on the Eastern Front of World War II where Nazi Germany and its allies unsuccessfully fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad. It took place between 23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943.

- a major engagement between German and Soviet forces on the Eastern Front near Kursk in the Soviet Union, during July and August 1943. The battle began with the launch of the German offensive, on 5 July, which had the objective of pinching off the Kursk salient. After the German offensive stalled, on 12 July, the Soviets commenced their Kursk Strategic Offensive Operation with the launch of a counter offensive against the rear of the German forces on the same side.
