Introduction
Text from the in-game manual translated into English (or more accurately, transliterated). For brevity I'm only including text that isn't already in English, modulo some headings to provide context. If you find any mistakes, let me know and I'll fix them!

Needless to say, but huge spoilers below! If you haven't beaten the game or worked out its puzzles on your own yet, I strongly recommend doing so before reading any of this. The satisfaction of doing so is well worth the effort in my opinion.

For other in-game text, see:

Writing system hints
Here is a sequence of successive hints about how to interpret the game's writing system, based on this excellent comment from the discussion forums:
  1. It is English.
  2. It's not a letter-for-letter English alphabet cipher.
  3. It's phonetic English, not written English.
  4. Manual page 54 has a little Rosetta-stone in form of drawings and their glyph representation.
  5. There is another Rosetta-stone in the game: The bad ending and in the good ending use either the Latin alphabet or the Tunic glyphs to display the game credits.
  6. Each glyph represents either a vowel sound, a consonant sound, or both consonant and vowel.
  7. Another little Rosetta-stone: the compass on the Lost Atoll map page. The glyph on each cardinal point represents the first phonemes of the corresponding cardinal point word in English.
  8. The horizontal line in the middle of the glyphs is only used to delimit words, since this script doesn't make use of blank spaces. In some drawings and handwriting, it is omitted; this does not change the pronunciation.
  9. Page 54 shows two groups of glyphs. Notice how the top group is only exterior edges, while the bottom group is only interior lines. What could these two groups be? (see hint number 6).
  10. A ring sometimes appears below certain glyphs. Sometimes it doesn't. This alters in a simple way how these glyphs sound.
  11. The exterior edges are vowel sounds and the interior lines are consonants.
  12. Normally the glyphs are read consonant first, vowel second. The ring inverts the order of the consonant→vowel sound to be vowel→consonant.
  13. The entry for page 54 in this guide gives the phonetic values of each glyph in the chart.

Page 3
A long, long time ago...
There lived a Civilization of great power.
They built a city, and within that city they built
a palace. They held sacred the secrets of
the
Holy Cross, and understood the planar
nature of reality. They ventured to the far shore
and sought power from the spaces between.

As is usual, an alluring old power was discovered.
Fossils of self, annealed visions of the future,
entombed and cast into sarcophagi and buried.
A lever in the canonical plane, a store of
potential. Perhaps it is the fabled prize,

The Power To Defy Death.
Page 4
A Terrible Power Rises
The discovering Hero opened a tomb and revealed
a terrible truth. A
Cathedral was built
to venerate this new origin of life, and the
faithful were granted the grace of holy oblivion.

The World Is Thrown Into Ruin
The lever overworked! The fulcrum shattered! A hole in
truth will thunder open and all manner of disquiet
contradictions will gnaw apart the canonical plane.
The thread is snagged into a squirming coil, with
no beginning and no end. Flee to your arks,
old ones, and become your predestined selves!
Page 5
A Prison & A Beacon
...but one must live outside the shivering ring,
The Heir seeking an Heir-To-The-Heir.
A beacon to bring about a ruin seeker.
To either grow strong and replace an ailing heir,
or to hold sacred
Holy Cross, and ensure
their wisdom lives on.

Awaiting a Worthy Successor
Which will you be, ruin seeker? Have you arrived here
seeking treasure and glory? Or do you seek to
uncover deeper truths? Look carefully, for

The Golden Path lies everywhere...
Page 6
Canonical Plane - The Shadow Oubliette - The Far Shore

[right side innermost hexagon] The Heir
Page 7
Again the same battle,
fought uncountable times!

And so the cycle continues. Ruin seekers, drawn to
the beacon, are tested. Those who abandon their quest are
forgiven, and simply disappear.

Those who are strong enough to remember their true hero
selves will, through violence, begin the cycle anew.

Will you be the Heir-To-The-Heir, and
wait within the shadow oubliette? Before long a ruin seeker will
be drawn to you. Their gifts will recall your past life,
and you will grant them the same false hope you were given.

To break the curse, a ruin seeker must by some miracle
invoke a relic from beyond this plane...

Fantastic guide!!!
Congratulations and many thanks for having taken the time to do it with so much care and attention!! You've obviously put a lot of work into it with so much detail as you did.

I wanted to decypher the manual by myself, though. But your guide helped me check whether or not I was right in my decyphering of certain words (Well done for finding "planar", "gnaw", "quaff" or "hewn" [among others], btw! I was absolutely clueless about those until I found your guide!).
swoo703 16 мая в 16:46
[2/2]

That being said, I've noticed some tiny mistakes in your guide:
- Page 19: "The ghostly form of an ECHO-OF-SELF" should actually be "The ghostly form is an ECHO-OF-SELF" .
- Page 40: "3. A shaft descends into darkness" should actually be "3. A shaft descends into blackness " .
- Page 40: You missed out the writing in the center of the laurels (bottom left of the page). It reads " HERO ". ;-)
- Page 54: In the vowel table
• "a" should be "ɑ"
• the "ʌ" and "ə" should be swapped
• "ɝ" should be "ɜr"
• "oɹ" should be "ɔr"
• "ɑɹ" should be "ɑr"
• "ɪɹ" should be "ɪr"
• "oɪ" should be "ɔɪ"
• "o" should be "oʊ"
• "ɛɹ" should be "ɛr".

In the consonant table
• "ɹ" should be written "r".

Hi. Sorry for undiggind this topic but I have a question that has been driving me crazy when trying to decipher the booklet.

I understood that the title of the pages 13-14 may be read as Button . So I took note that the vowel character with the two lines on the bottom should be read as "uh" and that made some things quite hard to read. Later, I read the page 17 which describes the stick : "Just a stick!" with the same vowel character for the "i" in "stick.

I found no one talking about it, So I think that's just a "me" problem. But please, could you explain to me why the "to" in "button" and "ti" in "stick" are written exactly the same in Tunic ? I understood that Tunic was likely to us US-english pronunciations, but even with that, on dictionaries, for the words "button" the "/ə/" character is used for the pronunciation and it's the "/ɪ/" character that's used for "stick".

Thank you a lot in advance.

Hi, after translating the manual I compared my translation with yours and noticed a few mistakes with yours.

On page 4, "snapped" should be "snagged".
On page 17, "by unusual greatness" should be "to unusual greatness".
On page 19, "what was but is no more" should be "what was but is now not".
On page 31, "seal" should be "siege".
On page 35, "round" should be "around".
On page 38, "though to" should be "thought to".
On page 42, "world" should be "realm" (and it looks like you forgot to tag the first sentence as a spoiler).

Thanks!

I just checked, and it turns out /uɹ/ (CURE) never appears anywhere in the game! But if it did, it would almost certainly be merged with /oɹ/ (NORTH/FORCE) or /ɝ/ (NURSE/LETTER) depending on the word. Still, I noticed that /ʌ/ (STRUT) is actually in two places in Trunic: either merged with /ə/ (COMMA), or /ʊ/ (FOOT), depending on the word. In fact, what you use /ʌ/ to describe is actually /ʊ/!

Also, /a/ isn't a universal English vowel — it's more like /ɑ/, especially for how North Americans pronounce vowels from the LOT and THOUGHT lexical sets.
The Sojourner 4 июл. 2023 г. в 22:17
Anyway, I noticed a small error of mine: it's actually Canadian English, as evidenced by "out" sounding as "oat" on Page 16, as well as Page 48, which reads "house" twice: once as a Canadian would say it, and once as almost anyone else would say it. Someone also says "sorry" as "sore-ee" in the dialogue.

Also, if anyone's wondering why the last symbol on Line 1 on Page 40 is circled, it's due to a pun: "Air" sounds like "Heir"! This pun has been noticed on Page 38 as well, but not in-game.

Finally, I saw a typo for Page 36: should say "The Librarian has leaRned much" (currently says "leaned much").
wisnij  [создатель] 4 июл. 2023 г. в 21:05
@EndgameZero: Fixed! I didn't even see that the first time, it was so small, haha.

@The Sojourner: Thanks! And yeah, I'm deliberately doing a fairly broad transcription, so take all of these with a grain of salt :) For some things I'm not even sure they were attested... does /ur/ show up in any of the words in the manual? And in any case there are more vowel variations in GenAm English than this script can fully distinguish, so there's necessarily some degree of combining going on already.
