Half-Life Deathmatch Basics
Before getting into Crossfire details let's cover some general basics in Half-Life combat:

BASIC RULES:

1. NEVER stand still, always MOVE! Moving targets are harder to hit obviously, especially in HL. Jump permanently during a fight, maybe crouch for a little second as well.
2. Always aim for the head, as headshots deal 3x damage!
3. Don't try to kill opponents with your standard 9mm pistol for too long, same goes for the crowbar. It won't be very effective. Instead, try to find a proper weapon as quick as possible (A weapons list can be found down below).
4. When shooting with the rocket launcher, always aim towards peoples foot.
5. When using the smg in close range, you don't have to use your grenades immediately. You most likely end up killing yourself. Each shot deals 12 damage and the weapon shoots very quick. After ~10-15 shots it's recommended to use one as we have to assume that we either didn't hit our enemy properly or they have more health that expected (e.g through HEV power). Also reload that weapon as soon as possible as it can hold 50 shots, not only 25 when freshly picked up!

Also worth to mention: You don't need this but it may be useful to increase your fov (field of view). Type "default_fov 120" into your console (or whatever you like it to be). And turn off HD Models... please!

WEAPONS BASIC KNOWLEGDE (listed in ingame categories):

First Category:
- Crowbar; This is the only melee weapon in the entire game. It can only be used propely in the following situations: killing a afk player quickly and without wasting ammo and indoors after you spawned as soon as your pistol magazine is empty. Always consider the crowbar as your last hope to still get the kill from the fight you are currently in.

Second Category:
- 9mm Pistol; Your default spawn weapon. As for multiplayer, it is pretty weak and should be replaced as soon as possible. It may only be useful when you have no other weapon and you want to kill someone from a far distance. I'd recommend to prioritise finding a better weapon though!

- .357 Magnum; This weapon is only recommended for people with proper aim. Each shot deals 40 damage, resulting a headshot to be a insta-kill. While this sounds good, it is pretty hard to get a headshot on properly moving players. Also, if they have their suit charged, one headshot won't kill them anymore.

Third Category:
- 9mm SMG; this is one of the most useful weapons in the game. It deals damage very quick and may also be able to shoot grenades which deal 100 damage when hit directly. Don't forget to instantly reload the weapon once picked up because it can hold 50 shots, as soon as you pick it up only 25 are loaded though!

- Shotgun; the best weapon for close encounters. It is always recommended to use the alt-fire first, as this fires two shots. If your enemy is still alive, finish them off with the the regular firing mode, as this one is slightly quicker.

- Crossbow; the sniper of HL. Unlike in singleplayer, the bolts fired when using the scope will instantly hit your target. Without using the scope they will behave as in singleplayer but will cause a little explosion when hit. While this mode is considerably bad, it may still be used to fire at peoples foot to get a kill in close encounters. Remember that one bolt will not always kill your opponent. If their suit is charged up to 30, they'll survive with 40 health remaining!

Fourth Category:
- RPG (Rocket Launcher); While most people think that this is a overpowered weapon at first, they may come to the conclusion that it's not that powerful. In close areas it'll mostly kill you as well. If you still decide to use it at close range, always aim on peoples foot! For far distances however this weapon is pretty useful and allows you to clean up several enemies with just one rocket. Also remember that you can toggle the laster off with your alt-fire, allowing the rocket to be controlled or not. I recommend turning it off when you are not in a save spot as you might have to dodge a players attack. The uncontrolled rocket still has a good chance to kill your target because the explosion deals good damage, even if not hit directly.

- Tau cannon; I remember that there was a huge debate long ago about whether this or the gluon gun is the best weapon in the game. For me this clearly is the best weapon in the game, maybe because it's broken? While the primary-fire is rather simple and deals 20 damage per shot (two shot kill on headshots), but with a very good speed, the alt-fire is just out of range. It will charge the weapon up to 11 uranium (it's ammo) and will release a beam that insta-kills everyone. Besides, it can shoots through walls (more on that later on) and can boost you, to allow very nice movements.

- Gluon Gun; For most experienced players, this is the most annoying weapon in the game. Understandable as it deals very good damage and disrupts the opponents aim entirely. In close combat situations you may hurt or kill yourself with it as it causes self-damage when fired too close to an object.

- Hivehand; While this weapon is very neat in singleplayer, it is pretty much useless in multiplayer. It deals 10 damage per hornet, but can only stock 8 at the same time. Therefore a kill with it takes very long, mostly you are dead by then already. For experienced players it could be considered a achievement to get a kill with the hivehand, a few use it to have a challenge on some servers. In my opinion this is the worst weapon in multiplayer.

Fifth Category:
- Grenades; Grenades don't have a practical use in multiplayer. You may use them on fuller servers though, just throw some into areas with a lot of players. You will most likely get a kill or two. It may also be a funny way to get rid of people chasing you with crowbars. Just throw grenades on the ground right before you, with luck they'll explode right when they run over it.

- Satchels; With a little practice, they can be used similar to grenades, just with you controling when they explode. Also they deal more damage than regular grenades and mostly kill your opponent. Since satchels have wierd physical behaviours, they can be used to make props (e.g doors) stuck or to even build walls.

- Claymore mines (can not be found in classic Crossfire); Once picked up, they can be placed at certain spots to get a save kill (won't be covered here).

- Snarks; Those cute little beasts serve mainly as a distraction. On close encounter they may be even useful as you can glitch them into a player, making them stunned and killed very quickly. Each snark bite deals 10 damage and snarks are alive for 20 seconds.
Spawn Points and how to handle them
In the following, we will go through every single spawn point and look how we can make the best out of them. You will notice that some spawn points are better and some are not. Screenshots will assist me in explaining you some ways:
Power Generator Spawn

Spawn Rating: Bad

Description: Depending on the amount of players on your server, this can be a rather bad spawn. You have a smg right in front of you but you always have to expect that players from the left rush out and kill you with the gluon gun which can be found in there.

What should I do?: Try to get out of the mess as soon as possible. First, pick up the smg in front of you. If there are no players in that area clearly go into the room on your left, pick up the gluon gun, the long jump module and try to charge your suit. If you have to leave the arena, it can be very tricky. Depending on the amount of players, you may have to fight your way through the open area into a more quiet area. I recommend going the way that is shown below: You'll find grenades for your smg there and even get a shotgun.

Here is the loot that awaits you:
Gluon Gun Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: This spawn provides you with a gluon gun immediately. You also have a HEV charger and a long jump module waiting for you. To reach a different location, you have to go to through the center area though, which is always a bad place to go.

What should I do?: Get the gluon gun, the long jump module and if possible, charge your suit. Hint: charge it the way shown in the picture! You'll instantly see when someone enters the room and won't be surprised from the back:

Leave the room and go left to the center area and go up the ramp on your left. You'll find ammo for your gluon gun there:

Hint: Always watch out for the balcony shown in the screenshot below! People find grenades there and will most likely fire them at you, which we want to prevent:
Upper Ramp Spawn

Spawn Rating: Bad

Description: You spawn at an open field and see grenades in front of you. Behind that you see a balcony with a tau cannon on it, which is hard to reach though. On your left is a room with uranium ammo and a way further inside the building.

What should I do?: This one depends on your skill: you may try to get a good jump onto the balcony to get the tau cannon or (which is better for beginners) you want to go to your left and into the room with uranium ammo. Go inside the building but not up the elevator! Go to the right instead and pick up the gluon gun which is located there:

Hint: stay away from the windows as players inside the bunker or on the bunker towers will see you earlier, making you a way easier target!
Lower Ramp Spawn

Spawn Rating: Very Bad

Description: You spawn in the middle of the mess that is going on in the center area. On your left is a tunnel leading towards the bunker area and on your right is a ramp leading to the upper area of the center.

What should I do?: You want to get out of there as soon as possible! Otherwise you'll have a bolt in your back or some rockets will cut you into pieces... Go into the tunnel on your left and try to get through it as fast as you can. Then go to your right and get the loot we already mentioned earlier:

Secret Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average (if secret room accessible, Very Good)

Description: You spawn under the connector of two buildings and have a room (and a secret room) on your left. If you go forward you get to the center area.

What should I do?: Go to the left into the room and get the long jump module. If the secret room
is accessible then don't charge your suit, if it's not, charge your suit. Careful while charging, always watch the entrance:

The long jump module allows you go anywhere from here, especially when you have your suit charged. The fastest way to get a weapon here is to get the rocket laucher in the center area:

After getting the rocket launcher, I'd recommend to leave the center area quickly, best is to leave through the tunnel.

About the secret room: It depends on the server you are playing on. Most servers allow the secret room though and you'll find 5 medkits, a crossbow with ammo and 5 batteries in there. It is highly recommended to get that loot if it is accessible! The room can be found behind this wall, just press your use-key to open the hidden door:
RPG Building Corridor Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You spawn in a corridor and you have a window on your right. If you follow the corridor, you'll get into a room with two batteries and a rocket launcher. A elevator leads downstairs.

What should I do?: I'd recommend you to jump into the other building via the window on your right.
Pick up the batteries and go further inside the building and sown the elevator. Go to the left and pickup the gluon gun which is located there:

The room after the corridor has two spawn points in it, which mostly results into a early fight without you having any proper weapon. I would not recommend going there first.
RPG Building Upper Room Spawn #1

Spawn Rating: Bad

Description: You spawn in the middle of a room with two batteries on your right and a rocket launcher in front of you on the left. You can go to the left to access a corridor which allows you to jump into a different building, go downstairs via the elevator or you can go to your right to get onto the buildings upper balcony with a crossbow on it.

What should I do?: Pick up the batteries which are just a few steps to your right. Then you have multiple choices, the best one to get a different weapon as soon as possible would be to go downstairs through the elevator. There you'll find a rocket launcher. If you go left, you'll access the balcony with the tau cannon on it. It is worth a look if the tau cannon is available, if it is, clearly pick it up as well!
RPG Building Upper Room Spawn #2

Spawn Rating: Bad

Description: You spawn in the edge of a room with two batteries behind the corner on your left and a rocket launcher on the left. You can go to the left to access a corridor which allows you to jump into a different building, go downstairs via the elevator or you can go straight to get onto the buildings upper balcony with a crossbow on it.

What should I do?: Get the batteries around the corner on your left and either proceed as described in RPG Building Upper Room Spawn #1 or go onto the balcony with the cross bow on:

It makes sense to see if the tau cannon on the balcony down below is available, if it is, clearly pick it up:

Otherwise, you may be save to get a few kills with your crossbow by standing on the balcony for a few seconds. Don't stand there for too long, a grenade from the balcony next to you will come pretty soon for sure!
RPG Building Upper Balcony Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You spawn on a balcony with a crossbow in front of you. On your right is the entrance into the building and to your left below is another balcony with a tau cannon on it.

What should I do?: I would recommend picking up the crossbow in front of you and staying onto the balcony for a few seconds to snipe some people. Don't stay there for too long as players can come from behind and the balcony next to you has grenades for the smg on it. You will most likely be attacked with grenades pretty quick. Instead, jump on the balcony below and pick up the tau cannon:

There is a rpg waiting for you inside of the building as well.
RPG Building Lower Balcony Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You spawn on a balcony with a tau cannon on it. To your left is the entrance into the building.

What should I do?: Since this spot is easier to attack for rocket launchers and grenades from the balcony above, pick up the tau cannon and seek cover inside of the building. Pick up the rocket launcher that can be found in the room. Leave the building through the exit on the other side and jump down to get to the secret room area:

Once again, if the room is available, get the gear in there, otherwise get the long jump module and charge your suit.

For the better players: Try to save at least 5 uranium ammo for your tau cannon as this allows you to boost out of the building and to this ammo properly:
SMG Building Satchel Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You spawn in a room with a elevator up front and a corridor on your left which allows you to leave the building in two directions.

What should I do?:
Variant 1: You may not notice, that you spawned directly into two satchels and picked them up already. Equip them and go to your left into the corridor and go left again. Throw your satchels down into the the passage to the secret room area and launch them, then jump down:

And again, get the long jump module, charge your suit and if available, get the loot from the secret room.

Variant 2: Go up the elevator and pick up the .357 Magnum in front of you. Try to aim at the hight of player heads and as shown below:

We aim directly at a spawn point. If someone spawns and we aimed correctly, they are a one-shot kill! Now jump down onto the conncetor, equip your satchels and proceed as in Variant 1.
SMG Building Upper Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Bad

Description: On your right you'll find a elevator with a .357 magnum that leads downstairs, up front you will be able to enter the buildings balcony with a smg with grenades and snarks on it and to your left you'll find a window that allows you to jump into a different building.

What should I do?: You should try to get the smg that can be found on the balcony. Once you have it, shoot some grenades (not all!) into players directions, don't bother watching them hit the players, you'd lose too much damage, since you have too many close and direct contact spawn points next to you. Instead, walk backwards into the building again and go either downstairs or jump out of the window into the other building:

Since you have a decent weapon now, you can clear out spawn areas very easily.

Hint: if someone is on the balcony already, you may try to use your crowbar instead of your pistol on there. There is not much space to run away and the crowbar deals more damage than the pistol (crowbar 25 damage per hit, pistol 12 damage per hit).
SMG Building Balcony Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You spawn on the balcony of the building with snarks in front of you and a smg along with grenades on your left. The entrance to the building is to your left as well.

What should I do?: You should try to get the smg that can be found on your left. Don't bother the snarks, they are mostly just a waste of time! Once you have it, shoot some grenades (not all!) into players directions, don't bother watching them hit the players, you'd lose too much damage, since you have too many close and direct contact spawn points next to you. Instead, walk backwards into the building again and go either downstairs or jump out of the window into the other building.

Dark Passage Spawn

Spawn Rating: Very Bad

Description: You spawn in a dead-end passage and have the possibility to either go into the building on your left or to go straight forward. On your left, you'll find a .357 Magnum next to the wall.

What should I do? This one is clearly one of the worst spawns. Definitely pick up the magnum next to your spawn! If you decide to enter the smg building, you'll have to fight your way through the building to get better weapons. You may also try to enter the building on your right, with a little luck, you'll find a shotgun in the room on the right. There are several spawn points in your way and it's not easy to get out of that mess with many players online. I'd recommend you to give the building on your right a try though.

This spawn throws you right into cold water, decide wisely!

Tau Cannon Building Hive Hand Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Average

Description: You'll find yourself in a room with a hivehand in front of you. The exit is on the right hand side. From there, is in front of you another room which also has a elevator leading upstairs. If you go right, you'll come to the upper center of the map.

What should I do?: It is highly recommended to go into the room in front of you. If there are fights going on in that room, try to avoid them and focus on going up the elevator.

Upstairs you'll find plenty nice weapons, e.g a smg right next to you.
Tau Cannon Building Elevator Room Spawn

Spawn Rating: Good

Description: On your left, you'll find an elevator leading upstairs and a shotgun with some ammo. Up front, there are two medkits and to your right is the exit leading to the center of the map.

What should I do?: If possible, pick up the shotgun on your left. More important is that you move upstairs quickly though. There you'll find a smg with some grenades and a tau cannon. Pick up the smg first before reaching out for the tau cannon:

Also pick up the batteries that can be found at the end of the corridor:

More ammo for the tau cannon can be found next to a window if you further follow the corridor. Be careful for snipers inside the bunker though:

Tau Cannon Building Balcony Spawn

Spawn Rating: Good

Description: You spawn on the balcony of the tau cannon building containing a crossbow with some ammo in front of you. The entrance to the building is on your left. There you'll see a elevator leading downstairs and a smg on the left of it. If you turn left you will find a tau cannon.

What should I do?: Pick up the crossbow and leave the balcony very quick! You are a good target for snipers on the rpg building and rockets. Once inside the building, try to get the smg with grenades which are next to the elevator. Walk backwards to the tau cannon and fire both smg grenades down the elevator:

You have good chances to hurt or kill someone who wants to come upstairs just in that second. Also make sure to pick up the batteries that are just a few steps away from the tau cannon and the uranium ammo even further:

Once again: careful for snipers in the bunker!
General Tips and Tricks
Now we saw every spawn and what possibilities we have for each to stay alive as long as possible.
In the following sections, I'm going to show you some tricks you may find helpful:
Where to fire SMG Grenades
Especially on fuller servers, we don't have time to aim our smg grenades properly, so we want to cover a few spots, where we most likely hit someone. The most important ones are shown below, pay mostly attention on how high I aimed there:

RPG Building lower balcony:

RPG Building upper balcony:

Uranium Ammo area:

RPG Building window:

Tau Cannon Building window:

Tau Cannon Building elevator:

You may want to practice those first on a empty server!
Where to shoot with the Tau Cannon
Without doubt you've been killed multiple times through walls. You want to know how and want to do it yourself? Then watch this, the most important spots are shown below:

Kills the one who is standing behind the door frame:

As soon someone spawned on the balcony and walked in, just shoot there:

Gets everyone who is on that balcony:

Noone is save in that passage:

Trouble in the room below? Try this:

Quite the opposite:

Hearing that medkit sound? Kinda wasted after that shot:

Kills players in the hivehand room:

Hearing a heath station to your left? Tell them to stop with this one:

Noone will bother you from above after this:

If you want the ammo to be yours then try this shot:

Just to be extra safe that noone scares you from behind:

Now what? No lamps?
Ah yes, lamps... it is understandable that players are annoyed getting killed by people shooting into lamps. To prevent even more people abusing this bug, I'm not going to cover how to do it but instead, I'll show you how to avoid it. Just to make it clear though, shooting lamps is no hack, it's a bug. Keep that in mind before instantly insulting people to be hackers! To find out how to avoid getting killed by that bug, continue reading at the far end of the following section.
Miscellaneous and Funny Tricks
Crouching Campers: We all know those people who crouch in a corner, most of the time with a crossbow. The good thing is, while scoped, they can't see whats going on around them. In case they didn't notice you, jump onto their head and crush them with your crowbar! One of the bad boys could look like this, just with a crossbow equiped:

Playing Hide and Seek: Using the tau cannon, boost up that terminal as shown in the screenshot. Feel free to let me know in the comments how long you were able to remain undetected:

Surviving the Nuke: The nuke can be annoying sometimes, if you'd like to survive it, you'll need to enter the bunker... that's what most people think. There is a way to survive it using the tau cannon, launch yourself very high up in the sky on the landing pads in front of the bunker:

There is someone abusing the Lamp Bug again!!: Well, here are some tips to avoid getting killed by that bug. Please note that the markings are not 100% accurate, they serve as orientation:

Upper RPG Building Area:
The satchels mark the area until you get killed, I'm standing in the save area:

Upper RPG Building Area:
The satchels mark the area until you get killed, I'm standing in the save area:

Lower RPG Building Area:
The satchels mark the area until you get killed, I'm standing in the save area:

Secret Room Area:
While NOT in the room, you can survive by crouching. Get your crowbar ready and show 'em:

While IN the room, you have no chance, you are 100% dead!
You didn't need to read all this, you are a highly trained professional!
Well, hope you've had a good read anyways. Thank you very much for your attention and I hope that this guide helped you at least a bit!
