Good starting mix of weapons is: plasma gun, pulse rifle (though I personally prefer the ripper), line gun and contact gun (I prefer the force gun).
Upgrade damage first, especially for the first three weapons. Upgrade your rigs HP but don't bother upgrading O2. Upgrade stasis but don't bother upgrading the range of Kinesis. When upgrading look for the low hanging fruit first (upgrades that require the least power nodes).
You can upgrades your weapons and rig further on a new game plus.
Keep a stock of ammo and supplies in the store so you have some room in your inventory to pick up more ammo, supplies, schematics and such. When you notice you have a lot of certain ammo/supplies sell them.
Experiment with which weapon best to use in what situation. That is an important part of the fun in these games.
Don't forget to use stasis against groups, big enemies and bosses to get in more (accurate) shots.
That aside, I can remember how thick with fear I was during my first playthrough ... I sometimes couldnt take the stress and play for longer then 20-30min at a time before taking a break. Especially after dying a violent death I often had to take a break. Lol. The fear at the higher difficulty never goes truly away, but nowadays I am so much tougher. Still, I never attempted an impossible run :V
