C&D's Perioikoi Swordsmen

Description
- Also included in the GREEKS megapack. Disabling is not required but suggested.

I know, "another spartan unit mod", and you are right, to a point. I'm not even a spartan player, and even if I reckon the vanilla spartan roster to be as strong as it can get (even if you self impose to limit your spartan citizen units), it deserves the chance to a minor reform towards end-game. No, not in a sense of an elite unit. There's plenty of elite units around in the workshop.

CRUNCH:
Their stats are aligned with the rest of the Perioikoi units, of course slightly better. They're decent if not good swordsmen (depends on your standards) and can be recruited either by a level IV Perioikoi Barracks or through the Leonidas' Barracks. As said, this is not because they are elite but because they are "new stuff" and can still be spammed after meeting the requirements. They are not meant to go toe-to-toe with Royal Peltasts or Praetorians! They'll die profusely! Oathsworns will chop them like walking steaks, and even Thorax Swordsmen will probably bully them a bit. (while a Spartan officer dutifully takes notes about how this is not Spartan at all)
You can still 'spartanize' them through good weaponsmiths and training buildings, not to mention the Wonder.

FLUFFY HISTORICAL NOTES AND WHATNOT:
Perioikoi Swordsmen represent a partial romanization/hellenisation of the spartan army. Of course, the experiment would at first involve the Perioeci, just like it happened with the macedonian style phalangites, before it could be applied to spartan citizens just before the fall.

This kind of unit probably would have come if Sparta would have had estabilished a dominion over the greek homelands and perhaps an alliance or first conflict with Rome or the Seleucids. A part of the Perioikoi would have been trained or retrained to mimic legionaries and thorakitai swordsmen of more modern armies. Eventually this would have involved spartan citizens but game-wise a full scale reform of Spartan Hoplites and Pikemen (because you didn't spam Royal Spartans, hmmm? :D ) would be op, because by then they would be veteran monsters who don't even need a sword reform to steamroll everything.

Enjoy!

It is working with a few unit mods from the workshop and some homebrewed others, I have no idea if it is going to crash with Radious' etc.
Anyhing wrong with the mod, just let me know and I'll, uhm, try and beat it with a stick until it works again.

Special thanks to Sebidee for his Template and Tutorial.

P.S.: No, I'm not giving them corinthian helmets.

Change Notes:
- Corrected a steroids addiction and put them back to the right height.

Hello there @Dreamiore and @Cataph. First of all, I want to thank you for making this mod. It is currently outdated and not working, but after a couple of days of work and learning I managed to bring it back to life, updated with descriptions even on the game's encyclopedia page. I was wondering if it's ok for you guys for me to re-upload the version I made? I hope I can get an answer, I wouldn't want to proceed without your consent, since I reused a lot of your work, especially for the unit icon and mask (it looks great!). Regards!

seems to not work with the current ROTR update.

Can you make them recruitable from a level 2 barracks or even 1? Please its not elite units so I think they can be used from the start of the Campain....Please please On tier 4 Barracs i use thespian Units from the another mod :) So if you can doit from tier 1 or 2 will by GREAT mix of army Hoplites and Swordsman... Thanks

just the unit the faction needs

No biggie :)
As for original units, since I am for the historical/what if approach, they'll maybe happen when I'll think/find out about some that can be done.

Sorry I was in a bad mood. I just think I would like to see more original units on the workshop.

So thanks for this.

i got like 20 mods for sparta alone, i'm sure some add identical units so i don't mind. The point in this as Darth Vesta said is something called choice. :D
Cataph  [author] Jul 7, 2014 @ 10:55am
I know there's other packs with analogous units (there's one from Maf as well, whose from a glance are different in having a hoplon+kopis instead of a more celtic look).
I also know that I haven't tried them. Have they got the same stats? The same recruitment tier? It's quite possible, or not, but even assuming they are exactly identical or "better", mine have a dedicated mod, which someone might prefer if they do not want the other stuff included in the other packs. It's really just a matter of preference.
Quite frankly I also don't care enough for Sparta to have tried most of the mods around here and who knows, maybe there's actually an identical unit in the workshop. It doesn't really change anything. :P

Dogsoldier has done this before along with many other modders and I think their skins are better as well so I don't see the point in this.
